Fear is not something I’m accustomed to. I’ve been heartbroken, cheated on, and I’m a survivor. I’ve been through the worst and still stand tall. I can handle almost anything—except Alexandur Bucur. He is the devil in a suit, a man so dark he makes you believe monsters still exist. His actions terrify me, but the scent of Baccarat on his skin entices me. It lingers on my pillows long after he’s gone. He makes my heart flutter like a high school crush. When I close my eyes, he’s there, his strong fingers tracing down my cheekbones and into the curve of my neck. At work, his scent lingers in my nose. I am Kenya Jones, and this isn’t a love story for the weak.
"The Devil Wears Baccarat" by Jatoria C. is a breathtaking dark interracial romance for women who love dark romance, possessive alpha men, and intense love stories.
The Devil Wears Baccarat: An African American Romance Reviews
-
There is no portion of this book that I enjoyed. The title is even a reach! The scent Baccarat is only mentioned once and this is not an African American romance…I mean how can it be if the MMC is Romanian? There is so much repetition and redundancy throughout the entire book! The same word can appear three to five times within one paragraph. There are a few typos and lazy writing (the mention of having Mirena birth control in the FMC’s arm when this specific IUD is inserted into the uterus).
The thing that really bothered me was the way the MMC kept breaking character. There is very limited use of contractions and slang on Alexander’s chapters, however out of nowhere he starts using “y’all”. It sounds completely out of place for a Romanian Mafia capo to use “y’all” and even worse reading a scene where he says “doing eighty in a fifty f**k a ticket” BFFR!!!
Other things that annoyed me:
1. The continued mentioning of “iPhone”! I picked up my iPhone. I unlocked my iPhone. What is the reason?
2. Trying to make the book current: buying Arabian perfume from the TikTok shop, going to the movies to see Bad Boy 4 and kaleidoscope hair products. It was just doing too much for me.
The plot is ok I guess, but the twists and turns were just too unrealistic. They basically fell in love with little interaction because the MMC said so. The entire first sex scene is INSANE! After every chapter I found myself saying WTH? This one just wasn’t for me. -

4.5✨ I was entertained by this one. I thought on the dark romance totem pole it wasn’t too dark and would be a good intro for someone looking to get into the genre. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the way Kenya matched Alexandur’s energy and how protective she was of her brother. Alexandur was clearly smitten with Kenya and epitomized the “touch her and die” energy. Looking forward to more from this family. The one gripe I had with this book is it’s labeled as an African American Romance and the MMC is clearly a different race - not that this takes away from the fact that this is a good story, I just think it is a little misleading. 🥴 -
If the author wasn’t a black woman I would have given this 1 star. The overall plot had potential but I am not a fan of the “I did this. Then I did that. Then I went there” writing style and that’s what this is. It also annoyed me that every time someone touched their phone we had to know it was an iPhone like why does that matter? There were a couple paragraphs that had the word iPhone in every single sentence and when most of the sentences are short that gets annoying.
The way the characters spoke also didn’t mesh with who they are. The FMC Kenya is from Alabama and yet her actual dialogue in a lot of the book is incredibly proper. The author is also from Alabama so I’m not sure why she wrote the dialogue that way especially since there were times when she actually wrote her to sound like a southerner. The MMC has an accent so I’m assuming his first language was Romanian and not English which is supported by the fact that Kenya mentions the way he pronounces some of his words and yet sometimes he sounded more southern than she did.
It was also annoying when the Romanian characters would say words in their native tongue because it never seemed to flow well with the sentence and then 90% of the time the English translation was just plopped into some parentheses next to it. I would’ve preferred for the meaning to be woven into the story itself but maybe that’s just me. It felt like I was reading a Romanian to English dictionary at times. -
Something must be wrong
Something must be wrong with me because I fell in love with Alexandur nuts self. I went from calling Kenya crazy to being ready to get my eagle tattoo. -
This right here
This was definitely different and I wanted to hate Alexandur so much but once I read and understood him I started to like him & as time went on he was definitely bae. Alexandur is known as the monster and for many reasons, he don’t take no slack from anyone no matter who you may be. Finding a rat in their camp definitely threw all of the Bucur men for a loop esp Nasu. These men were always taught to never show emotion and it has worked up until Alexandur meets Kenya. Kenya and her brother Kofi were all each other had bc their parents were taken away from them by persons unknown. Needing a new tech wiz was the way they happened to come up on Kenya & Kofi, Kofi being a young genius takes the offer but of course he has stipulations and the Bucur men oblige. Kenya fresh out of a relationship isn’t looking for another one at all. What happens when she falls for the one person that’s the most feared? I love how Roman picks up on little subtle things he thinks no one knows he does. Constantin was set to marry his best friend and produce and heir. How does it all go you ask? Pick up this read by Jatoria C to find out what happens all up and through this bomb dark read. You definitely didn’t disappoint at all. Need a different read I highly recommend this right here -
Ok!!
I enjoyed the book and the ending has me ready for the next saga!! This family took me on a ride! I must say this was my first interracial type book but I liked it!! -
twisted love
I waffle back and forth on dark romances because I am so often not sure of my feelings when dealing with the subject matter depicted in them, but Alexandur and Kenya's dynamic started with something I absolutely love—a kidnapping. Kenya's little brother Kofi unwittingly attracts the attention of the mafia, and Kenya wakes up one night to an ultimatum: either come with us or die. What follows is Alexandur taking notice of Kenya and deciding she would be his wife. Alexandur was a character because he was super steadfast with what he wanted and didn't mind doing WHATEVER to obtain it. I loved that Kenya had no hesitation about excepting Alexandur and his proclivities, and he was for sure crazy, but he loved her hard. I was honestly hooked, and I can't wait for Constatin's book because I want to know if he gets that marriage and baby he so desperately needs. -

Alexandur, Alexandur, Alexandur! There is just something about an unhinged man. Dude was a crazy murderer, who didn’t give a F about who he killed. Innocent family members of people who crossed him or his family didn’t matter at all. The first scene was wild AF!!! 😳 He and his brothers “kidnap” Kenya (FMC) and Koi (Kenya’s 18 yr old brother) so Koi can help them find out who is after his family's Mafia business. Kenya’s life has been filled with hardships and heartbreak. So when the Bucur brothers take them, the siblings are kind of calm about it. Kenya was a bad ass for a brief moment and she clocked Alexandur as a monster pretty quickly. Alexandur referencing The Art of Seduction to get Kenya was hilarious!!! Alex and Kenya fall for each other pretty fast but it made sense to me. There were some twists and turns that made this book exciting. The spice was spicy, I just wanted more of it. I read on KU , so I will be purchasing the physical book because I will read AGAIN. I can’t wait for the next book with Constatin and Ari (Kenya’s Best Friend). -
Ms. Jatoria said “oh you like them unhinged? Got it”
The pacing of this book was perfection for it to be under 200 pages. You get a glimpse of the character background/where they came from. And it has a great plot!
Alexandur: unhinged yes! But so fucking sweet and thoughtful. And he calls her “sotie” which means wife in Romanian! We love a man who know what he wants and goes after it, morals be damned 🤭
Kenya: Just a strong black woman who faces whatever the world throws at her head on! And just so happens that the Romanian mafia is looking for a new tech guy. Kofi her genius little brother fits the bill and the story takes off from there!
Check your TW! Also this book ends on a cliffhanger and I’m itching for book 2 -
Unhinged! Unhinged I tell you. 4.5⭐️. This was my type of dark romance. I swear books like this test your moral. That man was crazy, possessive and stuck on Kenya body from day one. His craziness was so serious that it was comical. That man said “ Either you gonna be with me or you’re gonna be with me” 🤣. Kenya kept testing him gangsta. I do love that she wasn’t docile and stayed a strong fmc even with conforming to some of his ways. She even become a ride or die. The way those cops treated Kenya I just knew hell was gonna break loose. I shed real tears to how Alexandur responded to her having Lupus. He was so soft and sweet for a psycho lol. I loved it. Didn’t expect the betrayal from the best friend and Tom. Now I’m glad Alexandur duffed him at the police station. I wonder if the cops will die in the next book 🤔. Can’t wait to read about Ari and Constantin.

Baby Alexandur is psychotic as hell 🤣 That man had absolutely no qualms about the crazy 💩 he did. He literally had a justification for every killing he made, but honestly I enjoyed it! Kenya & Kofi lowkey just went with the flow because they knew they was not about to mess around with them insane ass brothers. I enjoyed the plot & I’m super excited to see how the rest of the series goes!
The only little tidbit I have is the fact that it’s labeled as an African American Romance, but only Kenya is African American. Alexandur is Romanian. It didn’t take away from the story for me, but it should be labeled as interracial so readers know what they are getting into. -
Jatoria, Jatoria, Jatoria
This is my first book from This amazing author Jatoria and respectfully it won’t be the last one!!!! i read this book in one sitting, i read this book while folding laundry, cooking, and working. i promise you i almost stop reading after the first chapter i said nah i won’t like Alexandur, i don’t see myself liking him! Why is he now my book hubby. The way he stood on business the way he knew to follow his brother’s lead. there was never any jealousy towards his brothers but baby there was Jealousy anyone looking at his sotie! Speaking of his wife The way she stood on business, the way she was loyal to her brother but also getting what she wanted i loved it alllllllllll! the only issue, the only small issue, that made me want to go write this author a email was that ending!!!!!!!!!!! just wait until i finish writing this review. Never in the history of reading did i ever want to press an author about when is the next one coming. But baby with a banging ending like that!!! where is the next one at mamas? where is the next book at? i need it in my life, i want it in my life….. -
Freaking loved!!
Jatoria!!!! You did your biggest one with this one. Omg, I was nervous at first because usually I don’t go for interracial stories, but jeez, I fell in love with Alexandur and Kenya. Idk how but I just knew that ending was going to happen after the conversation with Constatin not really wanting the arrangement. The dang on plot twist was crazy!! I’m excited for Constatin’s book and hopefully Roman and Kofi’s will follow. This was such a great read!! -
Ready For More
Jatoria I see ya boo!!! This story was amazing and I loved it. Yeah Alexandur is screwless up top but Kenya knows how to tame and comfort his monster. I hope his security guys don't try to retaliate because of what he did or there will be no saving them. I could feel something was gonna be up with little Miss best Friancé, get it best friend/fiance 😂😂😂. I can't wait to see how Constatin gonna make them pay while getting Ari to say I Do. 💜💜 -
Alexandurrrrr!!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️➕

****⚠️Trigger/Content Warning⚠️****
un💀aliving of a 👧 which put me right off,I get its meant to be dark but come on was that even remotely necessary?have zero clue if there was any kind of retribution or punishment but seeing as this is who we are meant to be rooting for I'm guessing its a no. To be fair there was no on page unaliving of said 👧 just a box like that one movie with Brad Pitt iykyk📦 -
dark romance always!
Oh I was excited to read this. It was so good and let me tell you Alexandur was NOT for the weak. The man hand every single ounce of unhinged about him and he truly didn’t see the problem … the gag is I didn’t either hahahaha! But I love how Kenya adapted and came to terms with the fact she herself wasn’t all that hinged and loved him how he needed it.
Go read. -
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a good IR dark mafia romance. Alrxandur was psycho fr. He was unhinged in the best way. One major thing I liked about this book is there was no third act breakup. Also disclaimer; the book does end on a cliffhanger but it’s a cliffhanger for the next book/different couple but the plot isn’t wrapped up entirely in this one but that doesn’t affect the goodness of anything in this book at all. I still give it 5 stars. -
Jatoria is getting into her bag with this dark romance.
Here I am giggling and kicking my feet at the craziness of Alex and Kenya. Like don’t you just love when he’s hardbody but a softie too? It just hits different. Might be a monster but that’s MY monster though lol
Can’t wait to see how Constatins story unfolds. -
Did someone say, Monster
Whew, now I’ve read about some unhinged men and baby, Alexandur was indeed unhinged and diabolical! He truly believed no error in his ways. Kenya was the one for him, she was his light in the darkness for sure. In a fictional world, my man, my man, MY MAN 😂 looking forward to Constatin & Ari’s book next!
