I enjoyed watching Vickie gain in her self-confidence as she made amends for her past wrongs. Jake was a great, loyal Texas guy. I am such a sucker for reunion stories.

Lone Star Hero by Jolene Navarro was an excellent, engaging novel. Set in Clearwater, Texas, the story revolves around state trooper, Jake Torres, and the woman he's always loved, Vickie Lawson. Vickie, now a single mother of two, has fallen upon hard times after the dissolution of her marriage. Back in her hometown of Clearwater, Vickie is intent on picking up the pieces of her life and making amends for those she's hurt in the past. Misunderstandings and pride have always prevented them from being together and now that Vickie is single they finally have a chance to get things right. Of course Vickie's ex and Jake's secret past provide stumbling blocks that the hero and heroine have to fight to get past. Can they finally get it right and have a future together? I loved this book. It had me glued to the pages to see what would happen next. As far as heroes go, Jake is the best type. Handsome. Loyal. Strong. Honorable. And a faithful servant to the Lord. And Vickie's character goes through a spiritual growth from her first appearance in Navarro's earlier book, Lone Star Holiday. I loved the way her earlier actions were explained through her own insecurities. The children in the story were very engaging and realistic. I really enjoyed the spiritual message in this book and the supportive, loving community of Clearwater. Great, keeper book. Keep these Clearwater stories coming! -
"The cast of small-town characters is believable, especially in their struggle to find life’s purpose. They show the difficulty associated with asking for, and accepting, forgiveness" (RT Book Reviews). 4 stars

Jolene Navarro writes "Lone Star Hero"
I had not read this author before but it was story of second chances and I love to read about them. Vickie Lawson came from a family of means and prominence in the community, She grew up best friends with a young boy by the name of Jake. this young man was not so well to do and her Mom tried to seperate them when they seemed to be getting serious in their teens.
Misunderstandings between Vickie and Jake led them in different directions.
Another young man took Vickie to the prom and started dating her at the end of school and before they knew it were married with a couple of children. Tommy had problems with his aspiration to go into politics. He was abusive to Vickie and she knew she could not stay with him.
She wanted to raise her children in the town where she grew up so back they went -one thing -she wanted to be independent and not depend on anyone to do this. She was one stubborn woman and when she and Jake met again after all the years apart, she knew she had to stay away from him because in her heart of hearts she still cared.
Come read a story of misunderstandings-forgiveness-secrets-mystery and love. can these two have a second chance? -
This was a "can't put it down" book for me from the first page. It's the story of Vickie Lawson, who comes home to Clear Water, TX after her divorce. She is overwhelmed by the divorce with limited funds, a dad who supports her, a mom who thinks the world of Vickie's ex Tommy, two kids that don't understand, and an ex who's getting remarried. She's trying to do everything on her own. Vickie's best friend from her childhood, Jake Torres, still lives in Clear Water and still loves her. They resume their friendship and practically act like a family. Then Tommy comes to town willing to take Vickie and the kids back. Who does Vickie love? Can Vickie see Tommy and Jake for the people they are and always were? Can Vickie find love? Very real storyline and characters. This book is definitely worth your time. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A great syory
I thought the story started a little slow and I almost quit reading it. I'm so glad I didn't! The story took off and I was hooked. It's a great story about having the faith to let go of past mistakes and turn control over to God. A woman struggles with her past mistakes but can't escape how she feels about an old flame. I recommend it. -
I won this book on the GoodReads Giveaway contest. It is a very easy read and the story flows well. I always enjoy a story with horses thrown in for spice. A nice romance story with the drama of a conniving ex-husband and a happy ending. Always love a happy ending.

Single mom moves back to her hometown with her two kids. She is very independent. She doesn't want to depend on anyone, not her parents or even her childhood sweetheart. I love the way the story is told. Can she learn to trust again? Read it and find out for yourself.

I know these characters so well - I would feel bad if I gave them less than a five. They have gone through so much and deserve a real happy ending. Doubts, guilt and family expectations get in the way of who God designed them to be. Let me know what you think. :)

I absolutely loved this book. I had trouble putting it down. The triangle of Vickie, Jake, and Tommy had me hooked. I love the message to us all to trust in God. Great story.
-
I really enjoyed this book for it's setting and I liked the relationship between Vickie and Jake. Some more deepening of the plot earlier in the story might have made for a stronger ending but as a light romance it was a good job.

This book hits a personal note for a divorced Christian woman with demons to overcome. I found it very hard to read in some spots because it struck so close to home and it made me uncomfortable. I soldiered through and found the beauty. The star of the book, Vickie Lawson, has moved back to her hometown to start over with her children after a divorce. How many of us women can relate to Vickie? Millions? She reconnects with her childhood friend and finally discovers very important things about herself and Jake's relationship.
Jake is a very devout Christian man and a great role model in his church. He becomes an understanding role model for Vickie's teenage son too who is working through some difficulties that arose from the divorce. He is a State Trooper, and his motto is protect and serve.
Vickie has left-over issues with her divorce that have to be addressed before she and her children can live safely in Clear Water, Texas. She finds herself in the untenable position of having facts and knowledge and not wanting to tear the kids father down to them, while they and her mother push the man at her.
I would recommend this book to fellow readers. Just beware if you have gone through a divorce yourself, you may find yourself reliving a few hard moments. -
Oh wow! I never expected such a soft-hearted looking book to pack such a powerful punch! The author put some really hard issues in this book - issues that make you stop and wonder what is right and wrong or how would you act if you found this out? I can't go into much detail about what the issues are because it would lose an element of surprise as you read, but I'll just say I was just very satisfied with this book.
I loved the two main characters and how they both acted to situations around them. I liked the kids, the grandparents, and the characters from the previous book. But I did not like the ex-husband! Whenever he was around, I wanted to kick him for the way he treated everyone. He got his just reward in the end...
There is one small thing: It's best you read book 1 before reading this book. I read the first book a year or so ago and can't remember much about the story line, so I felt a bit lost in some scenes. This book was differently read with the assumption that the first book was read - and remembered... -
A sweet story with real issues and problems.
Two pet peeves, which are not, in any way, limited to this book. 1) A weak heroine. If you don't want someone touching you, don't let them touch you. I'm frustrated with you. 2) No communication. People please... just talk to each other.
That aside, this book was a good short read, and I would recommend to anyone looking for a feel good, faith-based romance. -
This is the first book that I have read by Jolene and will be reading more. This book hooked me in right away. Deals with a single Mom trying to make a better life for her kids...while trying to start a new life for herself and putting up with her ex. I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
