I'd Love to Draw is a collection of work by the innovative American artist Andrew Loomis, previously unseen by anyone outside the Loomis family and available in print for the first time ever. Having been held in the Loomis family archive for decades after the artist's death, I'd Love to Draw has been restored by a group of devoted experts, including the globally renowned comic book artist and Loomis devotee Alex Ross.

Since I have the other five Loomis re-issues, I didn't blink at picking "I'd Love to Draw" up, but it's definitely a different animal than the other books. So first off, if you're looking for actual instruction, pick up "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" and "Creative Illustration" first. They're both tremendous assets for artists who want to learn how to draw figures (and basic perspective, as well).

"I'd Love to Draw" is actually an unfinished proposal for an unpublished book by Loomis, who wanted to make a book for super-beginners, the sort of people who are intimidated by the very notion of drawing in the first place. So instead of the amazing, more finished drawings in Loomis' other books, the drawings are mostly sketches that would have been re-done in a more time-intensive fashion, had the book been picked up for publication. To help things out, pretty famous cartoonist Alex Ross (of "Marvels" fame) has added a foreward and commentary throughout the book, to help clarify what it is that you're looking at.

So this is an interesting book, but you should probably only get it if you're deep into Loomis and NEED to see more work by him (which is the opposite of the intent of the book in the first place), otherwise you might be wondering what all the fuss about Loomis is. As far as it being good for beginners, perhaps, but there are other how-to books (including the aforementioned Loomis volumes) that you'd probably get more mileage out of.

Поздняя книга Лумиса с комментариями является отличным руководством по рисованию скетчей. Автор учит не бояться форм, объясняет на пальцах азы рисования и показывает как строить сложные формы из простых. Как подспорье новичку в рисовании - отличная.

It was not bad, just not exactly what i needed. Still appreciated theoretical part a lot.

I highly recommend books by andrew loomis, because of the individual detailed subjects he draws and write about. And most importantly these books are for free download. They don't make them like this anymore.
