Tales from a Not-So-Dorky Drama Queen (Dork Diaries, #9) Reviews
-
Mackenzie's entry in Nikki's diary is a gateway for readers to have a glimpse on the life of a bully. Aside from the 8th book, I consider this as one of the best in this series. I hope that the subsequent books in Dork Diaries are much better or at par with this book.

The Dork Diaries is one of the series that I grew up with. I really loved this book because it was really different from the other books. This book was told through the perspective of the antagonist and it was really interesting to see what they were thinking. There are so many things that I liked about this book. I didn't have any problems with it and I never usually do.
The Dork Diaries is about a teenager named Nikki, who is going through all these different things while she is in school. Her enemy is the queen of the CCP (Cute, Cool and Popular) girls and her name is Mackenzie. Nikki has a huge crush on a boy named Brandon and she has amazing friends named Chloe and Zoey. When Mackenzie found Nikki's diary, she decided to read it and personalize it into her own diary. The whole story revolves around Mackenzie and how she sabotages Nikki's life and basically the reader is waiting for Nikki to find her diary.
A lot of people compare this series to the Diary of A Wimpy Kid, but I completely disagree. Although the format of the book is similar, with the diary pages the stories are different. Everyone says that this is a girl version of Diary of A Wimpy Kid but it's not. Greg and Nikki's lives are a little bit similar but the writing and everything is super different. I don't know if I am the only one who feels this way but it doesn't matter. I only read this books for my own enjoyment so I don't really care about these things. I just want the books to be interesting and fun to read.
There were so many things that were easy to relate to in this book. For example, Nikki's little sister is almost exactly like my younger sister. And Nikki's friends are so nice to her and that's how most of my friends are. Luckily there are no CCP girls at my school and if there are, I haven't met one. But even if I did, I doubt that we would be enemies.
Nicki, Chloe, Zoey, Brianna, Brandon, and Nikki's mom and dad are all amazing characters. Mackenzie is a mean person but it's hard to believe that she wont change because people learn from their mistakes. But Mackenzie is one of those girls who never learns from her mistakes. The plot is so different from what I usually read in Dork Diaries.
I read this in one sitting because it was fast-paced. Me and two other friends loved the Dork Diaries because it was a really funny and fun read. Once you start reading, you won't want to stop. I would recommend it to those who enjoy Diary-Formatted books and those who want to laugh. I enjoyed this and I hope you do too! -
could Mackenzie be considered morally gray now 😏
-
The way the "mean girl" Mackenzie was portrayed made this book seem like a bad book for kids. She obviously had issues, but the moral of the story never came and the lesson seemed to be "hate the mean girl."

I was in the bookstore, searching the right book, when I saw copies of this book stacked. I took a copy, read the summary on the back, and then placed it back from where I took it. Okay, so now I have three books which I borrowed from the library before coming here, and I have to search an unknown book for myself along with a known book for my brother, at the same time, make it fast because Dad is getting impatient. These words ran in my mind. I sycophantically made my parents search my brother's book so that I could relax and search for a book. It was fun searching for it among
Robin Cook,
Stephen King,
Lauren Kate, but none of them, I believed, would be "the book which should be in my house as my own." Finally, when my impatient father began to rush things, I walked back to where I saw
Dork Diaries: Drama Queen, took the copy with my fingerprints on it, and told my father I was done.
Later...
I was in the rear seat of the car, regretting buying the book. This is all your fault, Dad! You were the one rushing everything, and you didn't let me think for the perfect book. I'm gonna blame it all upon you. If not for you - !!!
Boy, was I mad and tensed! I was sweating, and I could have actually saved the world from water scarcity by just sitting in the car! I reached home, decided to read this at the end, and finished my other books.
I opened the first page, and my mind began to cry. This diary belongs to
Nikki Maxwell
Mackenzie Hollister
I felt so sorry for the girl. I then moved on and, well, um... I was worried for nothing!
The book just so nice, and Nikki was literally making me laugh, and that is one great accomplishment since I'm not a humourous person whatsoever. Subsequently, Mackenzie takes over Nikki's diary, and claims that she did not steal it, but instead, had "saved Nikki's diary from being stolen." And I had to remind myself that we were talking about Mackenzie here, not a sane human being.
From this, we can very well find out that even a school's Queen does not have a perfect life. She just makes it seem that way. However, by reading her vicious actions such as sabotaging Nikki's Miss - Know - It - All website, making Brandon's note time leap, stealing her diary and mentally torturing Nikki with her words, I'm now convinced that Mackenzie is the diabolical incarnation of Satan's younger sister!
Q. E. D. I was worried for nothing!
-
Nicci lost her diary and it is Macenzie the one who stole it.... Thank God nobody suffered a stroke and we - readers - have the unique opportunity to get inside Macenzie's head, since she is the one who writes in the diary for almost half of the book!
Another nightmare-in-high-school adventure from the series that I so much enjoy!!! -
Great book, hard to put down. Lovely front cover. Nice plots and twists to the chapters. Reccomend 100%, This book was AMAZING!!!!!!:) I liked how Mackenzie would steal Nikki's diary. Also I liked how Mackenzie would write in her diary every day and spread rumors about her but the actual victim was Nikki!
-
Yes this is a book no i am not cheating

I grew up with this book! Started when I was younger (like eleven years old)than Nikki and now I'm in my senior year of high school! It's already been that long?!
Anyway, at first I was thinking that maybe id outgrown it, because a lot of the drama in the first few pages could be solved through just communication. But then things got CRAZY and... Yeah there's a lot going on in this installment. All the things Mackenzie did to others just made me CRINGE. Like when Brandon was waiting for Nikki at the shop?EESSHH...
I was also worried Mackenzie wouldn't be a very well fleshed out character, that she'd be just that stereotypical diva and nothing else. Her character building was very subtle though, as you read about her extremely spoiled, yet still imperfect life. (Her little sister is a lot like Brianna.)
I think Mackenzie just finally moved because she finally figured out she could never win against Nikki, and she didn't want to graduate middle school having to face her obnoxious "humiliation" of having a "dork" stand her up from the very beginning of the series to(what I'm assuming) is the very near end of it.
As always, Russell's potent power with words and language was superb, and it made me laugh out loud, cringe, giggle, smile, and (this rarely happens to me with many books, especially with something not even meant for my age group) care for the characters. Heck, I ship BrandonXNikki. What is it, Bikki?:P I dunno, I'm bad at that sort of merging.
Props to the author for also reminding us that Brandon isn't just some nice guy, he has feelings who doesn't just let anything slide. When he said to Nikki" with friends like you who needs enemies?!" I was just like "ooohhhh, she better get some ice for that burn!"
Now for Chloe and Zoey.....:D -
I likes the book because of the excitement, and all the twists. The book was different than the others, because the story was being told by someone else. The characters in this story, are Nicky, Zoey Chloe, and Mackenzie. Mackenzie is the evil person in the story who takes Nicky's Diary and does mean things to sabotage her. I liked this book, because of the drama and excitement. I liked that the author also used an exciting remark at the end of each chapter, that made you want to keep reading. Overall, this book is worth reading bbecause of the fun storyline.
-
I thought that this book was absolutely great because in the previous books in the series we only heard of Nikki the protagonist's side of the story but in this book we heard of Mackenzie the antagonist's side of the story. Both had strong feelings on why they thought thy were innocent and found out about how Mackenzie really feels about Nikki, and how she thinks that Nikki purposely got her in trouble and made her clean the showers. Overall, I think this was a great book and I recommend it to you with 5 stars.

I honestly don't think that any young 9-15 girl wouldn't like this series. This book wasn't necessarily my fave in the series, but the way Renee Russell writes is fun, quirky, and true to every girl! I recommend this for just a quick read, I started it an hour ago and finished it! Nikki Maxwell (main character) is so "dorky" and a geek, but that's what makes her an awesome protagonist! Great series, GO BUY IT!!!! ;)

This is a very sweet and awesome book that is filled with many cliffhangers. I would especially recommend for girls. I encourage anyone to read this book because it teaches readers to not judge someone until you know their personal, daily life. Somebody may look like a rose but in the inside their life could be like a garbage. Treat others not out of envy or revenge, but out of love. Treat others as you would want to be treated (Golden Rule).

I thought the book was very good, and can't wait to read the next one. in the story nikki and mackenzie get in big fights and mackenzie ruins nikkis friendship with brandon and later on her bff chole and zoey help her out the situation gets tough and life gets better for her but then... mackenzie takes over nikkis diary and ruins nikkis a dive website... i guess you have to read the book to find out.

This book is perfect for some light comedic reading. If you're looking for a profound children's book, try One Safe Place or something of the like. If, on the other hand, you have an 8 year old daughter that likes to both read and laugh, hand this to her. As someone obviously older than an 8 year old, I can't love it the same way.
When I read Mackenzie's portion of the book, I was a little disappointed. I thought when she read over Nikki's part, she would be surprised for the way she treated Nikki and would have some remorse. I know that when I bullied people like how Mackenzie bullied (yes, I bullied in the past, and am not proud of that), I was shocked at how my words were taken in and wanted to stop but I felt like I had to keep it up for the sakes of both my reputation and a good laugh. She, and this is the part that disappoints, just made up comical excuses for why she did the things she did. Come on! No one's that blind! The author could've hit home with the "not everybody that smirks with lip-glossed covered lips is all bad" but no. Mackenzie was shallow, was mean, and I know that's the way it's supposed to be, but can't we see her lash out without meaning to? Not because she thinks she's giving fashion advice or whatever she'll make up next. I didn't go in expecting complex characters, but I was expecting a little more.
Nikki was great, showing morales and being hilarious. I just wish she hadn't made a jab at Mackenzie to their mutual crush every other page.
Speaking of that mutual crush, Brandon is a wimp. The nicest, cutest, most awesome wimp ever-- but still a wimp. Come on Brandon! Stand up for yourself! She just told you to slither under a rock! Don't just apologize, sigh, and walk away! If Brandon was real, I'd be very concerned for him.
Chloe and Zoe were FANTASTIC with their crazy ideas and the prank call they made had me laughing out loud.
The plot was cool; the exposition, conflict, climax, and resolution was satisfying. The drawings were nice too.
So, I really liked this book. It had me laughing, loving, and I went in this expecting just what I got. If the characters had a little more depth, I would definitely raise it by a star. But I do recommend this to those looking for a good laugh, a good read, and some good drawings! -
*Spoiler Alert*
Have you ever experienced losing something very special that meant everything to you? That is what happened to Nikki Maxwell. She lost her own diary full of secrets in her school! This book is fiction and the author is Rachel Renée Russell. This story mostly takes place in Nikki's school because that is where she is trying to find her diary. What mostly happened in the story was that Nikki was going to start writing in her diary about her enemy Mackenzie Hollster which was the most popular girl in her school. She noticed that her diary was missing and started freaking out. She asked her friends to go help her find her diary but they could not find it anywhere around the school. The type of conflict in this story is Person v.s Person because the battle is between Nikki and the person who stole the book. In the middle of the book Nikki's handwriting switches into.... (SPOILER ALERT) Mackenzie's Handwriting. Later on Mackenzie starts writing about her life and problems. She even confessed that she saw Nikki trying to find her diary but Mackenzie did not bother to help she just kept the diary. In my opinion I think that it was bad that Mackenzie did not turn in the diary if she saw that Nikki was searching for it. Mackenzie even switched the cover of the diary so Nikki would have no clue that it was hers. I give this book a 5 out of 5 because it was really enjoyable. I would recommend this book to everyone because this book is very funny and I know that anyone can enjoy it like me. At the end Nikki did get her diary back when Mackenzie dropped it, By the way the part that seemed weird is that Mackenzie moved schools because supposedly she was tired of Nikki. Overall this book is really good! -
Another brilliant Dork diaries book. With brilliant illustrations by Nikki and Erin Russell. A gorgeous front cover (can`t beat a bit of leopard print!). A nice effect of when you shine the book in the light it makes the front cover of the book turn lots of different colours such as green, blue, yellow and lots more of different colours.
I love this Dork diaries book. My favourite part is when Brianna gets to look after the class pet, Rover, lets say it does not end very well.
When Mackenzie steals Nikki`s Diary she doesn`t just read it but she writes in it!
I like how in the book you can tell who has written in Nikki`s diary at what time.
But when Nikki`s BFF Chloe sends a message to Nikki`s website Miss Know-It-All Mackenzie decides to hack on to Nikki`s page and answer all the messages herself but no one know`s Mackenzie is answering the messages, not even Nikki, so will Chloe and Nikki`s friendship come to a end?!
Can Nikki put all the pieces of the puzzle together and fix her friendship with Chloe? Can she get her diary back? Or will she have to sacrifice one of them?
When Nikki finally gets everything back to normal and goes back onto the Miss Know-It-All website she see`s all the mean messages Mackenzie has sent, she remembers that at 12 o'clock Nikki`s messages will be getting put in the school paper, its now a race against time to delete all those awful messages before they get put in the school paper and get read by the entire school!!!
Review by Amy-Lee, aged 10. -
I absolutely thought this book was terrific! Filled with page turning events you'll never want to stop. With heartache to backstabbing this series has it all. This story is written by the amazing Rachel Renee Russell. The book talks about how Nikki (a new transferred student) adapts to her new school, friends, rivals and the drama. From being locked in a gym closet to almost making everybody hate on her an almost getting expelled so far she has made it out alive.
In this particular book it was my favourite in this series. A brief summary of this book to make it quick and not spoiling it, will do. Basically Nikki has a very secret diary she writes in 24/7: it keeps all of her biggest kept secrets and most embarrassing stories. MacKenzie Hollister (her rival with an awesome name) somehow managed to get her perfectly polished little fingers on it. Leaving Nikki and her best friends in distress the girls look everywhere for it. Slowly MacKenzie starts to rip Nikki's love life apart, friendship and website apart with the help of her diary and a little snooping around! Find out all the juicy details by reading the book or my Book Talk! See you next time! -
This was so amazing! I never knew how Mackenzie Hollister's life would be, but now we finally have a glimpse of it! I was so excited that I couldn't stop reading! By the time I had gotten into the car and arrived home, I was already done with it. My parents had to even take it away from me a couple of times since it was so good. If you haven't started reading the rest of the series or haven't read the ones before it, definitely do since you're going to need it to know what some of the things are that Mackenzie will be talking about. I rate this book a 5/5 stars since it was that good. All the goofiness and excitement was really enjoyable!

I was really excited to get this book. Most of the Dork Diaries books are decent, with amazing illustrations. This one, however, is mainly about MacKenzie. Let me just say, this girl is DYSFUNCTIONAL. She will do anything to sabotage Nikki's life. The normal popular girl will NOT bully that much, just pathetically act like she's the best. I felt like there was no story with this book. Just MacKenzie this and MacKenzie that. Also, it felt really whiny. Well, duh, she whines throughout like half the story. This book is boring and whiny, so if you like those kind of books, pick up this one.
