You're in the middle of the ocean. The blazing sun beats down on you mercilessly. There's water everywhere but you can't drink it. How will you stay alive until help reaches you? Will you: Work to save yourself and others when your small airplane crashes at sea? Battle a fierce storm as a passenger on a chartered sailboat in the Caribbean? Try to survive alone on a small fishing boat stalled off the coast of Maine?

Can You Survive Being Lost at Sea?: An Interactive Survival Adventure (You Choose: Survival) Reviews

This is part of the You Choose/Can You Survive series of adventure books that puts the reader in the middle of the action. This time the reader is dropped into the sea far away from civilization and forced to make choices that will hopefully lead to survival.

At the end of the first chapter, readers get to choose three different remote areas to try to survive: (1) to be downed in a small aircraft at sea, (2) to be adrift in a sailboat with a small crew, or (3) to be lost at sea alone along the Atlantic coast. Then there are numerous possible outcomes for each of these sea locations that will lead you to survival or death.

My middle school students will love this adventurous tale that's full of action and the bonus is that they will also learn real information about sea survival, along with some great pictures and illustrations that match the story. Did you know that water covers 75 percent of the Earth's surface, with 70 percent of it in the form of oceans or seas?

The book ends with additional useful survival information, including survival tips, mini-biographies of real survivors, a survival quiz, more books to read, the Fact Hound website code to find out more interesting websites to explore on the topic, a glossary, a bibliography and an index.

After recommending this series (and the You Choose books) to the constant stream of kids looking for something to read after the I Survived books, I finally decided to pick one up myself. Reading it took me right back to being a kid myself and plowing through the Choose Your Own Adventure series. Age quite obviously does not equal wisdom though because I still died. A lot. But at least now I know some useful things about what to do if I'm ever lost at sea!

  • Story

I've read so many books in this series and this one is definitely one of my favorites. It seems realistic and educational. It's also super fun and I feel like if I ever really got lost at sea the knowledge I gained from this book would come in very handy.

  • Shaylee Chapman

This little choose your own adventure survival book was something fun and different for our read aloud for the last couple of nights!

This extreme survival title will have great appeal for boys and reluctant readers.

I have a 4th grade male reluctant reader. He has loved every book in this series so far. This one was no exception. The reader chooses where to take the story. Short and simple.
