Major Grey Colson's retirement from the Clay County Sheriff's Office was not what he bargained for. Cancer had taken his beloved wife Ann's life and changed his forever. Their home of over twenty years was nothing but an empty shell and constant reminder of her suffering. Leaving their home to his newlywed daughter, Nichole, Colson left the stifling heat of Georgia for their condominium on Daytona Beach. The memories there were of happier times.
The plan was to enjoy the ocean view and cruise the beach in his Corvette. But being idle would drive Colson crazy. Then his cell phone rang. It was an old acquaintance and retired detective who persuaded him to assist with one surveillance job. Colson reluctantly accepted the offer, but would ultimately regret it. Something about the job bothered Colson, but how bad could it be? One or two hours and the job would be done. Quick and dirty.
Being idle would not be a problem for Colson. An encounter with an egomaniacal Volusia County Deputy during a traffic stop left Colson with a less than positive perception of the local Sheriff's Office, but the Daytona Beach cop he later encountered gave Colson renewed hope that not all the locals were incompetent. It was Officer Matt Sanders who rolled up on Colson after he decked a punk for slapping a young girl on the beach. Professional and by the book, Colson knew cops like Sanders were a rare commodity.
An eventful first month to say the least, but these seemingly unrelated events would soon intertwine around one man, Martin Cash, and pull Colson into a world of human trafficking, murder and blackmail. As commander of Internal Affairs, Colson knew all the players and their dirty secrets, but now he was out of the loop and it was getting under his skin. The Sheriff was turning a blind eye and his organized crime unit was getting nowhere. If they couldn't get the job done, he would. His decision to finally leave it alone and let the police and bad guys play their game without him changed instantly when his daughter fell into the middle of Cash's lethal operation. With nothing else to lose, Colson abandoned the Code of Conduct he lived by for nearly thirty years and did what had to be done. Policy and Procedures be damned!
