This book discusses the process of equipping the Dutch navy with warships during the First Anglo-Dutch War in 1652 to 1654. The Dutch started the war with their standing navy augmented in 1651. Immediately before the war they funded the acquisition, mostly through hiring, of some 156 ships (50 Directors' ships, 100 ships by the admiralties, and six ships by the East India Company). Two thirty ship building programs were also started of which only a few ships actually were added during the war.
