After my parents were murdered and my brother was taken, I vowed to stop at nothing to find him and bring down the men who wronged me. When I'm offered a chance to find my brother in exchange for assassinating a rising threat, I jump at the opportunity. But I never could have predicted the invitation I receive to compete in a tournament for my kingdom's Heir of Fate, a man who can see and know all truths.

There’s no world where I don’t take that chance, a chance to know everything about my past. But to win, I must face off against the fiercest female warriors in the kingdom.

More than that, the man who offered me the invitation? He's sexy, mysterious, and the first time we meet, he pins me to a wall with daggers. That’s basically my love language, but I can't afford to fall for him.

Navigating this treacherous world of magic, betrayal, and romance won't be easy, but if there's one thing I am, it's lethal.

I will claim the truth, find my brother, and as a consolation prize, I’m going to win that Godsdamn throne.

This is the first book in the Veil of Fate Series. This book was originally published as episodes 1-16 on the Veil of Fate Kindle Vella Series.

Vibes: confused world building, no specific time period, pace was too fast.

I felt confused from start to finish really. The world building was non-existent and pushed to the background. I felt as if I missed something, like perhaps a whole book before this.

    cool magic system

Terrible love story but that might because I’m not a love at first sight kinda person and that is definitely this story soooo do with that what you will

    it was really good

Zora - she is so strong - so brave - doesn't want anyones protection - only herself - does everything to find her brother - she is a lady who knows what she wants - > and gets

Cristen - aka The Fate himself

    The story:
the story was really good - good plot, good writing
and the plot in the end - didnt expect that

    Favorite part nowwwww:
THE QUOTES - I have some good stuff hahaha
(The quotes represent my feelings and best things of the story - its how I can express my fav parts of the book)

In the Underground, one can sell anything. Name it, and there’s a price. Body, soul, skill—they’re all fair game. For me, it’s all three with a suffocating touch of wit.

This touch, this simple embrace—does he know how much it means to me? To be touched without lust or desire? To be held as if I’m a fucking woman and not some thing to be manipulated and bought? No. No, how could he know that? And yet… It’s like he does, because he doesn’t let go, and some part of me wonders if he needs this as much as I do. If he has scars across his soul that are in desperate need of healing.

His eyes are more than eyes. They swim with possibilities, desires, wishes. If I were to stare long enough, I would drown in them, floating from one reality to the next.

“I don’t know,” he suddenly admits. “You don’t know what?” I ask, my lips nearly brushing his. His forehead knocks against mine, and his expression turns pained. “I don’t know if I can survive you, Zora Vyner.”

“Fucking kiss me,” I growl, desperation crawling through me. He laughs, and the galaxy of his eyes sparkles. “Whatever the lady wants, she gets,” he muses, dipping lower.

The desire in me ignites into an unbearable roar, and I shove him back to stand up, needing to take control, to get exactly what I want.

“You will never touch her in that way ever again. I do not care that you’re my blood. I will rip your heart from your chest before I will allow you to hurt her. Do you understand?”

“Because if I look at you again Zora, I’m afraid I’ll never stop. I’m terrified that if I see your eyes, I’ll fall forever, and if I see your mouth, I’ll kiss you until I can’t feel anything but you. I’ll drown in you if I look at you, and I can’t do that.” He pinches the bridge of his nose. “Please just give me the needle, leave this room, and get some rest.”

“You’ll be screaming it all night, all day—even in your dreams, princess,” he teases, pulling back with a satisfied smile. I level him with a calculated look. “I’m nobody’s princess.” - “You’re right, my queen.” - “For you, my incredibly badass queen.”

he wants my attention, he will have to force it. I’ll never give it to him willingly again, unless he’s on his knees, my sword at his throat.

For the first time in my life, I wake up safe. I peel my eyes open, and I’m face-to-face with a knocked out Cristen. His arm is firmly around me, his fist clutching the back of my shirt. I blow out a slow breath, my body feeling as at ease and secure as his face looks. No frown lines or turmoil. Just a man relaxed.

There’s a lust there for Cristen, strong enough to almost outweigh all else, but as much as I want him, there’s a desire rooted far deeper in my soul. A desire to have a family. To steal back what was taken from me when I was far too young. A desire to be loved the way a brother might love me—a brother who exists but who has been forever lost to me. I think of Gretta, of her love and compassion, the kind a true sister would give. She may not be my brother or my blood, but she’s been there for me when it counted most. She’s family, and right now—she’s missing.

The Beast drops the mask from his eyes, revealing irises I could never forget. Irises that once held so much love and joy and passion… for me.

and lets leave it with that
    I would recommend it

I love female rage and this did this very well in the beginning, not a fan of love at first sight and the main character felt like she completely changed in the latter half of the book. Interesting world at the beginning but just fell short

  • Mack Smith

i devoured this in one sitting. do i need to say anything else??

if you’re looking for a fast paced, page turning fantasy with a strong FMC - this is your series!

the twists at the end had my mouth ON THE FLOOR. i cannot wait to see where this series goes!

  • Nancys_RomanceRealm

Found myself enjoying this short book

It’s short, but actioned packed. Holy major cliffhanger! I did not see that ending coming. Thankfully book two will out next week.

  • Cassidy O’Neill

The only reason my rating is missing a star is because it could have been longer! It felt a little rushed. Excellent writing, but could have used more world building and more of a build up to her relationship with The Prince but omg plot twist at the end! 🫣 I can’t wait to start book 2

  • Olivia Irene

    3 stars is generous

This book had a lot of potential but there wasn’t enough world building or explanation to a lot of things. I feel like I started this book in the middle of a series I was very confused with the magic system and the royal hierarchy and the world?? It was decent but it just didn’t really make enough sense to keep me engaged

  • ChristinaReads5

I really wanted to love this book.

Zora is talented in seduction and fighting. She works for a boss named Beast and is given a job of finding out what a new Boss named Prince is doing to get clients. She finds out some truths that not many know and she starts to fall for someone she isn’t supposed to.

It was okay,l but I really wanted to love this book and I feel like I would have if it was longer and a lot of the tension was fleshed out instead of everything starting and ending abruptly. There needed to be better transitions for the big events and the side characters needed more time instead of being told why they were important.

The ending really threw me for a loop. I know it was supposed to be a twist but it came out of nowhere. No inclination, no foreshadowing and it didn’t really make sense. Again, more pages would have helped flesh the story out more.

I liked the premises of the book but wish the meat of the story made me feel the way the TikTok video, that recommended this book, made me feel.

Although the ending leaves you waiting for the 2nd book, I think I won't be reading it. The world was amazing at first but lacks development, coherence and deepness. At first I thought I had missed book number 1 because there was so much info missing.

About the characters, it was toooooo fast but at the same time nothing really happened. Falling in love at first sight is an interesting trope, but somehow it feels badly developed here. It has romance, yes, but almost nothing aside a couple of kisses. The FMC is incredible at first but then she gets to a Bride Hunger Games sort of trial and she does nothing ??? gets rescued everytime by the only person NOT supposed to be there helping. ???? the arena, the monsters ?

I don't know. I was really interested, read it really fast (1 day) but the taste is bittersweet. This book could be so much better.

  • Tiffany Bumgardner

This is a fast read, not because it’s so amazing you can’t put it down but because of its actual length. Honestly, it was an intriguing world but there needs a lot of world development and character development. For the most part so so so much was obvious who was who and who they would be from the first pages. At least it was abundantly clear to me, the fmc is suppose to an assassin but in a brutal arena that’s fighting to the death she spends more time being rescued and injuries than displaying skills. The final fight/ reveal/ betrayal wasn’t surprising, wasn’t enthralling and was predictable. I am currently debating if I care enough to bother with the rest of the series.

  • Tree Perkins

Extremely quick read. I didn’t know I hated love at first sight tropes until reading it and it’s a big no for me. The book is readable but not enjoyable, there isn’t much character development and not only is the love at first sight but everything in this books is just hopping from one thing to another with no build up for even the smallest of events. The whole thread thing isn’t really explained will, it’s a memory type form of currency but no one can read them (legally or easily) but you want to earn them from other people? No idea about most of this hunger games inspired Bridgerton story.

  • Sami ❤️❤️❤️

This book was really good. It is one to actually have you feel feelings. From hurt to rage we see everything from Zora’s position. Major spoilers but the end of the book is very messed up and I hate what happened to Gretta. The book was pretty good though. But the romance kind of left after a while and I wish we had more. There might be more in the next book though!

  • Numinex Marlise

4.5 stars, marked as spoilers just in case.

I really enjoyed this book, the world building was good and I enjoyed the chemistry and implications in the relationship between Zora and The Prince. It was a quick easy read and thoroughly enjoyable

The things I did not enjoy about this book was we were told A LOT that Zora was a badass, but didn’t very often get to see it. There were a lot of aspects of Zora’s personality that I really enjoyed, but I never got the feeling she was a badass per say.
I also didn’t see a lot of the feminine rage that the author posted about on their tiktok, but I’m also willing to chalk that up to my personal interpretation of feminine rage.

The ending left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. The reveal of Xavier wasn’t something I saw coming, but The Prince’s involvement in what happened with that trial left me questioning how their romance would be able to be mended after so many times he’s blatantly lied to Zora. I also felt a lot of the stakes were removed during the tournament when he joined in as well.

The pacing was very fast, the entire book taking place over maybe a week from what I understood. It was a lot to digest at once.

Despite what I felt were shortcomings, the series has a lot of potential. I did skim through the next two books and I don’t think I personally would enjoy them, but I won’t deny that the first book laid down a lot of really good building blocks.

  • Laura Alexandra

I really enjoyed this book but was left wanting more from the story and I had a lot of questions that were unanswered. I LOVED the Alchemight Duology with my whole heart...so I was expecting a little more of everything from this series. I hope the next two books deliver.

🖤 The world building was lacking for me. A few times I found myself checking that I was actually on the first book and not midway through the series! I guess we were just thrown into the thick of it. I loved the aesthetic of this world and the characters, so this book (for me) could've done with about 200 more pages to fully flesh out the world, magic system and characters. The main event that is mentioned from the beginning of the book (the trials or competition or whatever) lasted like 20 pages? I wanted MORE.

🖤 I really like Zora. She's sassy, feisty, strong and independent.

This world is unique and I can't wait to see how it fits into Alchemight. I love Jinapher's style of writing, it's so easy to lose hours and hours in her words. PLEASE GIVE ME MORE OF EVERYTHING IN THE NEXT BOOKS.

And the way those four words break his smile – I’ll never forgive myself.

Veil of Fate was my first book from this author and it was a fun read! Zora is hellbent on finding answers and has been shaped into this bloodthirsty killer who isn't afraid to get down and dirty with her kills. I don't quiet feel the tension between her and the male love interest (aka The Prince aka Cristen) because he seems to be obsessed with her from their second meeting. But he's so hot and cold and we're left with little answers as to why he's doing what he's doing. As the plot progresses, I found myself enjoying their banter and flirting more than I did in the beginning, but I'm still not sold on their relationship. The bride trials part doesn't quite start until about 75% but there is definitely a Hunger Games element as they're dropped in an arena and have to fight to a central location filled with supplies and weapons and then survive in the woods for who knows how long as they fight to the death. Ends on a cliffhanger but book 2 is released tomorrow so I'm not that upset with it.

Jinapher J Hoffman is the queen of misdirection. That’s two of her books I’ve now read where I’ve picked up on a relatively predictable plot twist fairly early on, only to be thrown a curveball later in the book that I didn’t see coming.

I swear she feeds us these easy to guess storylines that we’ll inevitably focus on the whole way through, waiting for it to happen, all so she can plant the seeds for another twist that will absolutely blindside you. It’s very exhilarating and makes for a really enjoyable reading experience. Such a sneaky sneak!

I really enjoyed this one, although not quite as much as For Mist and Tar. Zora is very likeable as a MC, but I did find the world building in this one a little on the weaker side. The love story element seemed a bit out of the blue too - we went from zero to one hundred and I feel like I missed the middle. Where was the build up, the angst and the growing tension?

This is a shorter book, so I understand trying to fit more into less pages, but it came across rushed for me. There also seemed to be a bunch of plot holes, but I’m hoping these will be answered in the next book - I’m for sure going to keep reading so I guess I’ll find out!

In summary: short and not so sweet - sharp and gripping with a bit of fun and an immediate connection between characters. I have SO many unanswered questions, so on to the next book we go 🫡

    POV of only FMC
    Slow burn
    Written in first person

What a wild ride that was! I inhaled this story. Every page turn had me wanting and needing more. That ending was 100% completely unexpected. I couldn’t be more happier book two is already out (book three will be here in January 2023).

This is a slow burn with betrayal, secrets, and lies. The FMC, Zora, and MMC, Cristen, aren’t exactly enemies, but things keep piling up against them. I tried to be understanding since Cristen has a tie with fate. Many times though, I find my self just wishing he’d make better choices. Granted, It just adds another layer of this multifaceted story with the angst.

I found this book on booktok. Sometimes those can be a hit and a miss, but this did not disappoint. This is what I crave in a story; Adventure, romance, and so much damn mystery. I do get a small fated mates vibe even though nothing is said about it. They have an instant soul connection that neither was expecting. I can’t wait to find out what the fates have in store for us.

Book two here I come 😂

  • Sophos

I discovered Jinapher through some tiktoks and finally decided to bite the bullet and buy her books because I was so intrigued by the concept of her multiverse. The first book did not disappoint!!
The plot was plotting!!! The twists were twisting!!!! By the end of the book I was giggling, gasping, and racing to see how the hell this would wrap up! Hoffman created some great characters here, and I have to say, I appreciate that she doesn’t treat the audience like children— she really steamrolled us with the ending there but in the best way possible!
World building could have been a bit stronger, but I can imagine that is why she recommends reading For Mist and Tar first when diving into this world of hers.
Very pleased and VERY excited to see where this story goes and to dive into her other series in Wrathos.

I can’t wait to be able to say “I found Jinapher Hoffman before she really blew up”

  • Rhianna

This book was so over the place, the time line was confusing? Like it was giving olden days but this suddenly there was a night club and flashing light and all that?? Just didn't really make sense, same with first-aid kits being a thing. The love in this book was too fast, for something that's supposed to be enemies to lovers, it took literally 3 days for her to fall fully for the guy 🥲 and I'm not over exaggerated that, it literally says it in the book. I found it really silly for her to be by "Ive never trusted anyone else more since I was 11 so I feel so betrayed " after knowing the guy for 3 days 🥲 and at this point of her saying that she still didn't even know his name. 😅😅😅😅 It was abit rushed honestly, the plot never really had suspense is always one thing to the other, whenever she got injured she would just instantly be healed up the next day, There was never really any struggle for her to go through.

  • Fayth Whicker

    - This is a trilogy with the last book being Wars of Fate
    - I found the first book on TikTok and was immediately interested!
    - I was unfortunately disappointed. The first book was a 1.75 star rating for me and the second was a 1.5 star rating. There is such a good story between the two main characters, but there is little to no world building, there are things mentioned that are important to the story and then never elaborated or explained later. The love interests have chemistry, but it’s forced and doesn’t seem right for how early on in the book it is. The plot twist are crazy though. I would love these books to be rewritten with more world building and more depth to the characters along with the story and I think these would be close to a five star read.

  • Chrystal Allen

    Phenomenal

I have to say, I read this book in a matter of two hours after it popped up on my tik tok. As someone who loves a good strong female role and a sexy man with lots of secrets AND FANTASY, this book was absolutely perfect for me. The conflict, the gore, the romance! The only thing I didn't like was how short it was, I was so devastated it was over. I could've kept reading all through the night and well into the morning. 10/10 recommend. Absolutely can not wait for book two:)
