Pet Crafts was shelved in the youth section of my local library, but I felt like it required craft skills that most children wouldn't possess. For example, I would think that most projects requiring a sewing machine, fabric cutting, pinning, and piecing are probably more designed for the crazy cat lady (adult version) than crazy-about-cats kid (child version). There is no mention of "do this with your child," (although there are some children modeling costumes designed to look like animals?) so I think maybe a savvy librarian was trying to stave off an influx of pet craftery in West Bloomfield by hiding this book in the kids' room. One thing I didn't like was that some of the toys seemed downright dangerous, or would perhaps not be as durable as needed, and there was no disclaimer, such as "be sure to supervise your pet." The cat toy, "springy snake," made of pom-poms and elastic string could more aptly be titled, "trip to the vet if you take your eyes off it." Also, there was no rhyme or reason for the techniques involved in each craft. Why would you go to town on the sewing machine for a stuffed animal, and then hand-stitch a stocking for your pet? A lot of the bowls, treat jars, cards, journals, stationary, etc. required the crafter to have skill in hand-lettering, drawing, sizing, and placement but the photo album and outfits called for gluing words or stamping pictures? I guess the author tried to get a variety of ideas in and a person could always adapt the item to fit his/her talents. I thought the ideas in Pet Crafts were really cute overall and my major complaint was that I wished there was more actually for the pets and less for the crazy-pet person.

I found a few cute projects to possibly try in this book, but I was looking for something... unique and fun, real "show stopper" ideas. Also.... cats are cats and dogs are dogs are dogs.... color coordinated outfits complete with accessories is just NOT okay.
