Following Trini’s whirlwind recruitment in the first issue, we rejoin the story as she embarks on a hilarious road trip with her ragtag team, who is still short 2 team members. Josie Campbell captures the chaotic energy of a group of misfits “bonding” as they make their way to Queen Mob’s Tournament.
There’s a heartwarming scene where Trini, overwhelmed with despair when she fears the team won’t qualify, realizes she’s having the best time of her life with this ragtag team of complete strangers. It’s a moment that will tug at your heartstrings and make you root for Trini even harder.
We’re then thrown straight into the action with their first tournament match (hilariously name Podunk Lil Team 😂), showcasing Trini’s steadfast determination that burns brightly within her. Campbell perfectly balances humor with genuine moments of sportsmanship and strategy that highlights Trini’s leadership skills.
My only minor nitpick is that the issue’s fast pace left me wanting a bit more world-building. However, the decision to keep the story moving feels refreshing compared to many decompression-heavy first arcs in new comics. It keeps you hooked and eager to see what wild adventures are up next.
Alessio Zonno’s artwork continues to shine with a heavy manga influence. It brings the story & characters to life w/ so much depth. Emotions are exaggerated, movement is emphasized, & the action is palpable. The vibrant color palette by Angel de Santiago complements the art style beautifully, and Jim Campbell’s lettering adds the finishing touch with clear, dynamic text boxes.
I Heart Skull-Crusher #2 is a fantastic follow-up. With its blend of humor, heart, and action, this series is off to an amazing start & I can’t wait to read more! -
I'm living for the sort of misfit-found family forming; Trini's enthusiasm is infectious. Not to forget, the action scenes are also well masterfully drawn! While not over-detailed, they're clear as to what is happening. (which is an issue I find with some other comic series).
