a neat little tidbit of a book. I'm not overly convinced of the soundness of the author's arguments, but I'm neither a trained historian nor linguist to investigate his claims. It was interesting though. I don't know what I thought Madeleine L'Engle's foundation was for her story of Welsh princes in an America, North and South, at a time without other Europeans in
A Swiftly Tilting Planet, but I think I had a sense of her taking imaginative liberties with history. When this book popped up in a random search for something else on amazon I was curious. It was good to read some of the other bits of Welsh history sprinkled through, including the note on Welsh having first been written in Greek letters before Britain was swallowed by the Romans, leaving behind the Greek letter omega in its oft present 'w' as a vowel. His defense of the Welsh as literate folk and his bits on Taliesin were fascinating crumbs as well. I wonder if there is a more recent work exploring this issue of Madog ap Owen Gwynedd in North America in the 1100's.
