Tour of Duty, Armoured, Airborne and Infantry Combat in Vietnam 1965-1971 Reviews

Back in 2012, when some Bright Spark at Battlefront miniatures had the idea that their Flames Of War WWII rule set/miniature could be adapted with a few tweaks to Late 20th Century Warfare, they came out with this, the basis for what is Today Called "Nam. As such, this is a Module for FOW, and the player will need a basic FOW rule set in Conjunction with this book. Covering the Period 1965-1971, it can be used as basis for other Period confrontations (African Post Colonial Wars, The Malayan Crisis, the Indonesian Confrontasi, Laos, and Cambodia, even the Indo-Pak Wars)- but then the player will have to do a lot of their own work. For Vietnam, we get five distinct Campaigns to riff on- Ia Drang Valley, Saigon/Tet, Fire Base Coral (Aus/NZ), Lam Son 719, and The Third Phase- the last for Post Vietnamization battles of the 70s. Almost got me excited to play....
This book harks back to the Good Old Days of Battlefront, when they tried to put all the information you need into one easy to understand book. The Charts for unit creation and force development or pretty clear as is the points system involved. Typically although Vietnam was largely a Rifleman/Sapper war- we get a chance to field all the cool gear that was potentially possible. You can wage huge Tank on Tank battles if you wish- although Tank on Tank warfare was quite rare in the conflict. The Helos are Hueys (Uh-1), , Oh-6 "Loaches" and AH-1 Cobras, although many more types were present, and non-helo air support seems sketchy. But there's more than enough to field a force for a friendly beer and pretzels time with friends.
No adult themes and zero graphic casualty descriptions make this an OK choice for any reader over about 11 with an interest in the period. This is well designed for the Gamer/Modeller/Military Enthusiast not only are you taught the game and its parameters, but you can't help getting some history too. There is little political content, but some of the historical and tactical insights are well presented. If you want to game Vietnam in the 15mm or 6mm/micro armour scales this is a strong choice to investigate- although you might want to get the 'Nam Book that has supplanted this one.... -
The Flames of War system for miniature wargame combat is well though out and estbalished, they are on the 3rd edition., So when I saw the new expansion rules for adding Vietnam using the 3rd edition rules, I was excited. The rules are easy to understand, the history coverage and army lists are great. Great ruleset.
