Players, Bumps and Cocktail Sausages (Silence, #3) Reviews
-
Third in the Silence series and while I quite enjoyed it, I did find it a bit slow and extremely repetitive.
The plot was based around two subjects, and I just felt the repetition was to fill pages.
Three stars.
At the time of posting this series is available on Kindle Unlimited. -
It's been a number of years since the trial of Oakley's father. Oakley and Cole are happily married with a young daughter. Oakley's brother Jasper has put away his player ways and is a doting uncle and married to is former on/off girlfriend Abby, but is still struggling with Oakley's traumatic past. When he find's out that Abby has been cheating on him, Jasper falls off the wagon and has a casual encounter with his friend's sister, Holly. When Holly announces that she's pregnant with Jasper's child, he knows he has to confront his issues if he wants their relationship to last. This was a great installment of an amazing story!

I loved this book and there were just a few problems that I had with it and made me give it stars 4 instead of five stars. So first off the story is told completely in Jasper's point of view but later on in the story we get to meet someone named Holly and she becomes very important. We also get to hear a little about Oakley and Cole and that's a plus because their story was so sweet. I love those two and seeing them have their own family. They were a sweet couple and happily married after everything that happened. At first I was kind of disappointmented that it wasn't in their point of view but after reading what Jasper had to tell I got into the book.
To start off with Jasper is married to Abby which is the girl who cheated on him when they were in high school. It took a lot for him to forgive her the first time. And that's right I said the first time! Jasper desperately wants to start a family. He really wants a baby of his own. Abby and Jasper had a plan all set of for them to have a baby together but then he starts noticing a slight change in Abby. She starts becoming more distant and hanging out with "friends" more often. She said it's just work that's making her that way and making hee tired all the time. But Jasper can't help but think that Abby is cheating on him. He tries to vanish that idea because he loves Abby. In hopes of making things together work better he goes to Abby's work and catches her kissing another guy! And it rips his heart right out. She even slept with the guy too. He wanted to give her another chance but he can't trust her anymore after the second time. The first time it happened made him a player and is what destoryed him.
The next thing that happens is that Abby tries coming back and asking for forgiveness but he definitely doesn't accept that. I don't know who would after finding out about their wife cheating. Abby learns that she is pregnant and she thinks that it's Jasper's kids but really it's just the guy she was kissings kid. And he soon becomes really upset again. I hated Abby. I thought from the start that she would try to do something again. I thought by the signs she was a cheater and I was right. Anyway Jasper ends up sleeping with a bunch of girl's he just met because of that. He would sleep with them and then the next night find a new girl. He also drank all of his sorrows away. He drank all the time. That happened a lot in this book. I know that it's just in the book but it might be teaching bad ways for other people. I mean maybe teenagers if they read this. So I would recommend for people who are older. It even says it's for people 18 and up. But overall there's a good story.
He does meet this one girl though and her name is Holly. She is his bestfriend's sister. She is shy and quiet. She doesn't really drink much and is known as a good girl. But she does hide behind dark crazy makeup to make it seem like she's a bit rebellious. She isn't Jasper's type but they end up sleeping together. They are both kind of pulled together. She listens to him at work and they become friend's in some ways. They sleep together for about three times and then she finds out she's pregnant. That completely shocks Jasper but he's thrilled to be the dad. And he's determined to be the best he can be because of what his dad did to his family.
Jasper does everything he can for Holly and at first he doesn't want a relationship but he starts falling in love with her. He is there whenever she needs him. And Jasper is extremely sweet to her. But he is really worried though for the baby and Holly. He doesn't want anyone to hurt them the way his dad hurt his family. Holly and Jasper do end up getting together at the end of the book. His love for Holly is so sweet. He is determined to do everything right. And I just love how Jasper does everything he possibly can. Even though he was going through a tough time and drank and slept with other girls I understand why he did.
This book was like no other book I have read before. In some places I did feel like were speeding up too quickly. One minute Holly was 7 months pregnant and the next minute she was giving birth. But it was still good. I did also catch a few spelling errors but it might have been hard to catch. And if you liked Oakley and Cole's story you should continue you with this one. I think Natasha Preston is a great writer. -
I Loved this book! This was a stand alone to the Silence series, although it does fit in with the first two.
I am so glad that we were given some insight into Jasper's life after everything with Oakley. The guy has had it rough since he found out who his father really is.
So to summarize and probably give everything away (YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED... LOL).... The book starts with us finding out that Jasper and Abby got married and have planned on starting a family. However, Abby has decided that she wants a career first, which even though this disappoints Jasper, he agrees to wait a year. Along with the disappointment of waiting to have a baby, Abby has been acting distant with Jasper and he begins to question her fidelity.
Enter Holly, a friend's sister who is in town while on break from University. Holly and Jasper become closer after Holly takes a part time job at the center where Oakley and Jasper work. Jasper confides in her about Abby and Holly to Jasper about her current boyfriend. As they get closer abby begins to get jealous, which makes Jasper question her even more. After a while, Jasper confronts Abby about her distancing herself, and she explains that its just because she feels bad making him wait to have children. jasper plans a weekend away for the two of them to attempt to rekindle their relationship, but when he goes to pick her up, finds her with another man.
As in tru Jasper fashion, he deals with the situation the only way he knows how, getting drunk and having promiscuous sex with everyone who will have him, including Holly a few times (her and her BF break up around the same time as Jasper and Holly).
Abby tells Jasper that she wants to work it out between them, and that she is pregnant with his child. While he is excited to be a father, he doesn't want to get back with Abby. At their first scan, it is found out that Jasper is not the father, which sends him spiraling again and back into bed with Holly.
After a few weeks, Holly finds out that she is pregnant and after having a scan to confirm dates, tells Jasper, who is surprisingly cool with the situation. There relationship continues as friends with benefits all through Holly's pregnancy as Jasper doesn't want anything serious so soon after Abby , if ever again, and Holly wants to give him space hoping that he will fall in love with her.
Moving forward, The baby comes and she is named Sophia, Jasper begins having panick attacks worrying about Sophia and whether he will be able to protect her. After speaking with a therapist, he agrees to speak with his father to get closure on his past. While he doesn't get the answers he wants, he does feel better after speaking with him. He also realizes how much Holly means to him and tells her. She of course has felt the same way for months and is just excited to know that he feels it too.
Thats pretty much it. I know I jumped around a bit and probably left some stuff out, but I think this will be enough to make you want to read and see how gret the book is. -
Jasper broke my heart, I loved how much he loves his family he goes through so much in this book. I love that it is a few years after Broken Silence. Because we really get to see Cole and Oakley and how they are doing in the aftermath. But it is also everyone else who and how they are coping. Especially Jasper. He really has a lot of hate and betrayal he has to work through.
I loved how this book played out do I wish he didnโt have to go through more heartache yes but I think it had to happen this way for him.
Holly was awesome and even though the truth isnโt always easy she really lays it out for him in a way he understood that he did need the help.
Fantastic narration! -
Books #1 and #2 in the Silence series have been about Oakley Benson, and now in Book #3 we meet Oakley's brother Jasper. Jasper Dane has always tried to live up to the expectation of protecting his family, more so with what happened to his sister Oakley and as he grew older, he put away his playboy ways. Jasper married his college sweetheart Abby Dane, though life wasn't always roses as she cheated on him in college and slept with his best friend. Jasper decided to forgive Abby, and they went on to marry one another. Life has been good or, so Jasper thought with Abby getting her career on track. That is until he realizes that their relationship hasn't been as solid lately and Abby is always working late or canceling on them to go out with her work colleagues. Jasper starts to get worried and suspicious that Abby is cheating on him. One thing leads to another and on a whim Jasper plans a romantic surprise weekend away, though it will be him who gets a surprise when he catches Abby with a co-worker. Needing time to chill, Jasper goes and gets drunk and ends up sleeping with Holly - his friend's sister. Next thing we know, Abby is back saying she is pregnant. Will Jasper take Abby back now she is pregnant? What will happen though when his one-night stand ends with the same result? Is Jasper the father of both babies or just one? Will this mean he will finally get the family he has always wanted, but with which woman? As a fan of Cocktail Sausages, I thought that this book would be like a romantic comedy due to the title - however it isn't. Players, Bumps, and Cocktail Sausages is one big cluster of family and friendship drama with the odd funny moment.
After reading Book #3, though the Silence series can be read as standalone I am looking forward to reading Books 1 and 2. -
Jasper, you dumb twat. Such a fool, but deep inside, I love you.
----
Since Jasper got a niece and watched his sister's happy little family, he felt ready to start a family of his own, but his wife, Abby, is putting it on hold, thinking about her career before getting a child. (Career, as a teacher? Still possible with a newborn child... Anyway, she's a b*. I dont like her). Jasper's frustrated and going crazy for her absense. She's only home for 2 minutes before heading out again.
And his world's falling apart again. Once again, his mind is a mess, and his actions are stupid and irresponsible.
Ever since Holly walked in, Abby's always looked down on her, especially as Holly and Jasper's spending more time with each other as colleagues.
Now it seemed like Jasper's lost everything, and is once again taking - stupid -action. -
Loved it! This was absolutely perfect. So many twists in Jasper's life that I wasn't expecting and I couldn't put it down. This was a perfect sequel to Broken and Broken Silence. I really enjoyed not only Jasper's story, but also seeing how all of the characters' lives turned out. This book, along with the first 2, drew me completely in and are written in such a way where I felt like I was there amidst all if the hardships and emotions of every character. Natasha Preston has me hooked on her stories, and I will definitely be watching for her future books!
-
I feel no shame telling you, that this whole series is *better* then hopeless. Of course I love it with whole my heart, and it was an experience back then, but silence? Silence went all in with explaining and expanding the story, and covered everything that hopeless didn't manage to.
Of course this book was different then first two, but it still held the humour of Preston's writing with these characters, and the coverage of the triggery topic behind the whole trilogy was really perfectly still involved in the story. I can't say how grateful I am for Preston to deliver us such important books ๐ -
As much as I loved Silence and Broke Silence...I loved this one too!
I really loved Jasper's story. It was deep and full of angst, betrayal, feelings of guilt, love and then healing.
Wonderful series!! -
Wow! It was great going back to see Oakley, Cole and now Jasper. I was glad we got his story. It was good to see how he was with his sister and niece how protective he was.. In the inside he had demons to face from the past. To have the future he wants with the one person he never thought he would he would have to face his past. To have the life he always wanted.
-
Couldnโt sleep so I decided to finish this one.
I have to say: Why is the rated so high on here?๐คฃ 4.22 stars is way too high. There are much better books out there SMH๐คฃ the writing is quite terrible, so many typos and the dialogue was off at times.
Overall though I liked the story though. It was okay. Probs like a 2.5 stars rating rounded up. -
Again, I am impressed with this author. The title almost put me off a bit, just because of the oddity of it, but it was the next in a series I love so I was quick to want to read it!
This book is actually centered on Oakley's brother, Jasper, and his life spiraling out of control. He has yet to properly deal with what his dad did to his sister, and himself. He just continues to push it all deep down and be try to be the strong one. His guilt over not knowing, not protecting Oakley is slowing killing him and he can't seem to see it.
We pick up about four years after the last book left off. Oakley and Cole now have a beautiful 3 yr old daughter, which just adds to the terrible fear building inside Jasper.. Can he protect her the way he didn't protect his sister? Plus, he is now married to Abby, the one and only woman he has ever truly loved; and the one who broke his heart so terribly. He can't wait to be a dad as they had planned. Soon, though, it seems that Abby is pulling away from him, and now she wants to wait to have children, not even wanting to discuss it for another year. Doubts about her start trickling into his mind and no matter how hard he tries to push them down, they stay bubbling on the surface. Until the day he walks into her classroom and his worst fears are confirmed. Now he's spiraling out of control yet again, trying to drown himself in booze and women. He no longer believes in love and doesn't trust women at all, so why is he so drawn to Holly? Not only is she quite younger than him, but also one of his best friend's little sister.. she's off limits, right? Holly knows Jasper is broken, and may never mend, but she can't help but love him and hope that one day he will return that love.
I can't imagine being through all of the terrible things Jasper has been through! His life is a series of extreme ups and downs and my heart went out to him at once. I kept thinking, 'ok, he's gone through this terrible thing, so now things will be better, right?", but there seemed to be always something else just around the corner. Until, he finally makes a decision that will change his outlook on his entire life up to this point. He's terrified to face this because he's afraid of the consequences, not that I could blame him. I really enjoy this series so far and am very excited to read the next one! -
I would have to say out of the whole series, this was my favorite book. I always liked Jasper in the other books so I felt it was great that he got his very own storyline to say the least.. There was a certain amount of twists that left you wanting to read more. The grammar in this book got a lot better, but the reason why I gave it only 4 stars was because there was no separation from each section in the chapters. So for instance, it would be the end of one section and would immediately jump to a different day and scenario. You would almost have to decipher where each section ended and began. The tone in this book also made you really feel like you knew the characters. I hated Abby, but loved Holly. So the book really made you feel like you were living these issues with them. I enjoyed the previous two books as well, and even though they got a ton of slack from some reviewers, I would still recommend them to anybody. I was glad that this book in the series drifted apart from the issues from the second and first book and had a different tone to it. I felt like the visit between Jasper and his father could have been a little longer. I would have liked to see more with that section, but I knew it wasn't going to be as dramatic as I would have liked it only because I was already at 98% of the book. All in all it was a great read. I'm not sure why everybody gets on the "language" the authors uses in these books. Considering the issues in the first two books were real life scenarios that could happen, I like books to be as "real" as possible (obviously if it's fiction or sci-fi it won't be as close to real) but as close to real life as possible. And given Jasper's character I felt the language suited the novel. I plan on reading more from this author as it is a great book.

For a time during reading this book, I didn't understand the title of the book and it sounds naughty, which the book isn't at all. That wasn't the intention. This is the follow up after
Silence and
Broken Silence even though Oakley's not the main character this time. Rather, it's the perspective of Oakley's brother Jasper.
I was excited to read the book because I was curious about his perspective but it happens years after Oakley's ordeals so it was definitely interesting to see how it has affected Jasper even though he wasn't exactly a direct victim of what happened to Oakley. Despite that, it definitely affected him and how he becomes the man in the book. He married his sweetheart that he had problems on and off in the first and second books... And things aren't going well between them, unfortunately.
So Jasper hits rock bottom and for me, it's different to see this from a male perspective so I enjoyed reading it. I love Natasha Preston's stories as I can feel emotionally attached to these books. I read this probably sometime in the spring and I still remember it. -
This is the last book in the Silence Series that I just had to read. This one is Jasper's story.
I really enjoyed reading this story as it let me into Jasper's head. It revealed just how much the events of the first book, Silence, really affected him. He never got past the guilt that ate away at him for not protecting his little sister.
Although he was described as a man whore in the first book after being hurt by his previous girlfriend, Abby, he forgave her and they were married at the start of this book. I knew from the beginning that she never changed and wasn't good enough for him.
Jasper is a very loyal guy and sensed something was not right in his marriage. When his suspicions are confirmed, he starts up an affair with his friends younger sister, Holly.
Despite starting out as a bit of fun, one unexpected pregnancy soon turns their relationship into more. Even though they were not a couple, Jasper was the perfect gentleman and stood by Holly during her pregnancy and they both realised there was more between them than either of them admitted at first.
This book is about so much more than their romance but also Jaspers personal demons and how he deals with them.
Holly and Jasper are a perfect couple and he finally found someone worthy of his love and loyalty. This was a perfect addition to this series. -
Felt very rushed for such serious topics!
Plus the H has very flippant views on sex considering his sister was sexually assaulted!
He gets cheated on (goes in a sex and drinking binge)
Has sex with h - then continues on with his sex and drinking binge (gross)
Gets h pregnant - she tries telling him and finds him with his one night stand (the morning after) I mean WTF! The h has slept with 3 people including H (yet) he has slept with well over 70 (and apparently is still adding to it)
Definitely not one for the rereads or ever to be mentioned again (such a shame since it could have dealt with his anxiety better)
Should have left him with his cheating ex wife, they deserved each other and hopefully Holly could have met someone better! -
First off this is an amazing addition to this series. You get to learn about the crazy brother Jasper. Learning that he has demons to large to handle on his own is comforting. It's nice to know that Oakley has such a strong bond and is willing to help. Holly is super coy and shy that I truly feel that she levels Jasper out in so many ways that Amy could never have dreamed. Well happy congratulations to all the happy couples and families.
-
This book is a fantastic spin off from Silence & Broken Silence, which even though not essential, I would recommend reading them first.
Loved reading about Jasper & his life, it took me back into Oakley's world once more. Loved this book as much as the first two. -
It was more like a Rebound story ๐๐
Well this is the 3rd book in the series and is all about Jasper, Oakley's brother. I liked it but didn't love it and reason been that I didn't feel this love connection between Jasper and Holly it all felt like a rebound story. I love how the author brought in all this anxiety that Jasper was feeling and guilt. His PTSD and anxiety attack show the reality of was this sort of crimes leave behind in family. This part i loved it made you connect and it made you feel all this feelings.
Then Jasper and Abby relationship was hard broken and I like that it finally show that is not just guys that lie and cheat and pretend to be victims and try to get away with it. Abby will definitely get what she deserves.
Now Jasper and Holly I just couldn't feel it. I think the author rush with this relationship. I didn't like how she didn't give Jasper the time to heal and mature on his own and without been thrown to a force relationship with Holly only because she got pregnant. Holly also very young and immature she couldn't even talk about sex because she was so shy or be naked in front of Jasper because it made uncomfortable. I think the author should of done what she did with Cole and Oakley and give them time apart to finish their studies find themselves before getting together and pregnant. I hate how we keep throwing this fairytale idea that if girl gets pregnant, this unborn child will fix everything, IT DOES NOT! -
I know this book can be read as a stand-alone but if you have yet to read Silence and Broken Silence then I urge you to. Not only are they incredible reads but you meet the younger Jasper and get to see the boy turn into a man that I have grown so very fond of..... and you will certainly fall for him too.
Jasper isn't perfect. His life style at times has been concerning. What I absolutely adore about him is his ability to make me laugh often and his huge heart which means he loves fiercely and he is determined to protect those he loves.
He has had to face situations that no-one should ever have to deal with and this has affected him considerably. He puts others before himself but then there comes a time when we have to put ourselves first and face our demons to enable us to move on, and this is no different for Jasper. He's such a fabulous person and I can't help but wish for him to be happy and less anxious in his every day life. You'll need to read this book to see if my wish is granted.
It has been lovely to spend time again with Oakley and Cole and all the characters from the first two books in the series. I loved seeing where their paths have taken them. My feelings for Jasper have grown over the past three books and I totally recommend for you to witness his journey too. -
**SPOILER**
OMG this book was amazing. I loved reading Jasper and Holly's story. I cannot believe that not only did his girlfriend cheat on him as a teen but also as a married adult while knowing that he had trust issues. Jasper and his family went through a traumatic event that forever changed his perception of trust in all aspects of his life. While he hid his pain, his questions, and his family saw that he needed more. Abby was never able to understand how to be in a relationship so she continuously sabotaged hers and Jasper's all for the sake of wanting different things. Jasper's family was torn apart by the betrayal of Max(dad) for his abuse of young women including Oakley his sister. Jasper cut off all ties to their father and solely focused on being the strong man of the family even though it stunted his mental health. All he wanted was a family of his own. Kids of his own and someone to completely trust with his heart.
Holly, is young, vibrant and smart and on break from college. She begins to spend more and more time with the family at the center and soon her relationship with jasper begins to grow. But how can they be growing so close when he's just out of a marriage, and still grieving the loss of his childhood...
This book is all you could have ever wanted and more. I loved seeing how Jasper grew into an honest, loving and respectable family guy who didn't let his past demons control his life. Holly and Jasper were made to be together. -
This story was another one that I wrestled in my head about the rating & review but in the end, I decided to give it 4 stars. This is about Jasper Dane, Oakley's brother, and my favorite secondary in Silence & Broken Silence. He's now settling down after everything went down with his sister & the trial, so he marries Abby, his on & off again girlfriend. However, he's still been struggling with Oakley's past, not to mention wants to start a family, but Abby has put that idea on hold. Next up for him is finding out Abby is cheating, so he loses it and starts sleeping around, including Holly, his friend, who ends up pregnant. And this is where the story gets dicey for me, as Jasper really starts making even more bone headed decisions in my opinion, which makes a push & pull situation that absolutely makes me straight up crazy. See, I understand that he has big issues at this point, but what he puts Holly through was a big fat no bueno for me, and I start to get mad at Holly for allowing so much of it to be honest, though I love her. Jasper was a favorite of mine until he decided to go to the dark side for this time period, and if you want to know if he got his crap together, then you'll have to one click this angst filled goodness. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Players, Bumps and Cocktail Sausages by Natasha Preston
This book focused more on Jasper and his life. I love how the author interconnected it with the previous two parts bringing Oakley and Cole together after marriage in this book.
Oakley is still trying to recover from that traumatic past. Jasper's character building is everything here, from being a protective brother to being an adorable uncle and devoted husband,i love everything about him. He married Abby whom he loved and who cheated on him. He accepted her and married her. But then, he wanted to start a family but abby doesn't agree with this and she concentrates more on her career but later Jasper came to know her true shade, she's again cheating on him. Holly, his friend's sister became close to him. And he developed some feelings for her. The story goes on and ends well. Really well! Loved how it connected everyone around the whole series.

So I did a brave thing and read a book from a genre I rarely read from; ROMANCE! Well, to be honest, this book only fell into my lap because it was the third instalment in a four book series I was reading about child abuse. This is a stand alone book so you don't need to read the first two which, focused on a girl called Oakley, a victim of child abuse.
This book is about Oakley's older brother Jasper. Jasper enjoys the 'high life.' He's either drowning his sorrows with a strong drink or he's counting the amount of girls he's able to take home from a bar in one week with glee. The book starts off with him as reformed man. He's married! But things takes a turn for the worse and he's back to his old player habits. However, he gets his life back together when he discovers that one of his friends with benefits is expecting a baby.
This book is not my thing so I can't say I really enjoyed it however, I love Jasper's wit and the writer does a decent job of exploring PTSD and its effect on relationships. It hasn't put me off trying a book from romantic fiction in future. -
Rating: 3/5
Review:
This book is a spinoff from the first two books in the series, Silence and Broken Silence, and follows the brother of the main character Oakley. In the original books I was not a fan of the brother, Jasper, as he was the origin of a lot of the cringe-worthy actions and cheesy lines. I was not looking forward to this book, but reading it actually changed my mind. It really humanizes Jasper and gives us insight into his mind, which is what I feel the first two books really lacked. As its the same author around the same time period the book still has the same problems as the other books, primarily with spelling and grammar.
Final Thoughts:
If you have already read the first two books, I highly recommend reading this and getting a glimpse into the same world through Jasper's eyes. It's interesting to see not only what goes on in his life, but as well as getting a continuing story of Oakley and Cole. It is under the same premise as the first two books, being so noticeably YA, but if you've come this far it clearly doesn't bother you! -
I absolutely loved this book and I fell in love with Jasper. From the previous books I wasn't sure how I would feel about him and from the title, it seemed this would be a very silly romantic comedy, but it really wasn't that at all. Each word in the title has it's own meaning in the book and as you read it, you get the meaning of the title.
I adored Jasper. Granted, he is a bit immature, but overall, he is fiercely protective and loyal and sweet. He tried to hard to make his marriage to Abby work and when he caught her cheating I felt so bad for him. I wanted to scream when she came back pregnant and I was hoping against hope it wasn't his, even though he wanted it to be.
I liked how his relationship with Holly progressed and how they were friends with benefits. They fell in like before they fell in love and that is important in a relationship.
I loved Jasper's relationship with Everleigh and she just made me smile with every page we saw her. You just know what kind of Dad he was going to be. And Holly is the perfect woman for him.
I'm very sorry this series is over.
