Black Mesa Magic is the prequel to Mystic Dreams and Dusty Roads, and reveals the background for some of the characters in that particular book. As children in the early 1900s, George and Savannah grew up playing in the Black Mesa area of the Oklahoma panhandle. The hidden caves, the banks of the Cimarron River and surrounding area were their playground. At eighteen George decided to venture on his own to Oklahoma City, leaving Savannah heartbroken. She had always felt they would spend the rest of their lives together. The story goes on to define the ensuing events between Savannah, a new-found friend, and a mysterious man who ultimately played a significant role in her life.
Robert Valleau has a flare for creating authentic pictorial elements of the landscape. I envisioned the Black Mesa area in the Oklahoma panhandle, and I've never been there. I researched some photos of the area after reading the book, and the scenery revealed in Black Mesa Magic was familiar to the point that I felt I had seen it myself. The characters throughout this book are colorful and convincing. Having read Mystic Dreams and Dusty Roads in the past I was surprised at how smoothly the author was able to merge the past with its sequel which had been written at an earlier time. I thoroughly enjoyed this look at the background cast and events surrounding the characters who came before Mystic Dreams and Dusty Roads. I look forward to a sequel to this series.

Robert Valleau has gifted us with another poignant novel, Black Mesa Magic , the second book in his Dusty Roads Chronicles trilogy. As a prequel to the first in the series, Mystic Dreams and Dusty Roads, it carries the reader back in time to the beginning of the twentieth century, where we find Savannah Palmer making her way through teenage years filled with challenges, hardships, and yes—romance. Northwestern Oklahoma’s Black Mesa is a fascinating setting.
This author shows he did his homework regarding research on both the chosen time period and the geological area this tale encompasses. Through rich descriptions and natural dialog, I was swept along with this young girl as she hitched rides on passing trains and dodged bullets. Her natural beauty and innocence make her appealing as a main character, and when she discovers new feelings about boys her choices are believable and authentic.
This is such an easy-flowing read, and will leave the reader anxious for the last book in the series. I received this book from the author with no promise of a review. -
Great story
I loved the setting, characters were down to earth, and I was kept in the dark as to the final ending.
