Orphaned at a young age, Samara is left under the care of her three, horrible brothers. Just when she thinks she cannot take another day of their abuse, a handsome prince offers for her hand in marriage.

Samara’s brothers agree in exchange for a large dowery but on her way to her new kingdom, her carriage is ambushed by Lore, the wicked Prince of Nightshade.

Samara believes that the fae has snatched away her chance at freedom to punish her for her crimes against his kind but punishment is only half of Lore’s plan.

The truth is that the Elven Prince has pined after Samara for seven long years. She is all he can think about—a toxin in his blood. Can the Prince of Nightshade, whose power over poisons rivals none in The Enchanted Forest, manage to find a remedy or will he succumb to her love?

We open on the lovely scene of a young maiden named Samara reliving the memory of going full Darth Vader on a hunky Fae by assisting him in removing his hand from his person. We’re joined shortly thereafter by her 3 ratchet brothers, a sus prince, a saucy fox, and aforementioned uno handed Fae. She almost loses her life A LOT but ofc we find the meaning of love along the way. And they lived happily ever after. Ameneth.

When Scarlett writes a book, she puts her whole heart into it. I knew, going into this book, my heart would go through it as well.

This is book two in the Fairy Tale Retelling series. This series follows seven princes, and each prince will have their own book.

This book, follows our wicked Prince Lore of Nightshade, and our sweet and innocent Samara.

Orphaned at a young age, Samara is left under the care of her three brothers. They are… horrible to her. I mean… if you have triggers… be careful going into this book. Because the way she is treated… breaks your heart.

One day when Samara wanders off… to hopefully find peace… a handsome prince offers for her hand in marriage. Her brothers agree in exchange for a large dowery.

On her way to her new kingdom… the Prince of Nightshade ambushes her carriage. Samara believes that the fae prince has snatched her away to punish her for a crime she committed long ago…

What the Prince actually needs help with… is to break his curse… and what Samara doesn’t realize… is the curse he has… is one put on him by Samara herself…

If you love The Cruel Prince, Labyrinth, The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns, Snow White, A Curse For True Love, Cinderella, fairytales, dark… fairytales, fairytales with spice…you will greedily consume… Apples Dipped In Gold.

Samara reminds me of Cinderella, especially the quote “Have courage, and be kind.”

She has gone through so much, and yet her ability to be kind to others is one of her most admirable qualities. She inspires me to keep my head high and always pick the path of courage and kindness, even when hope feels miles away.

I don’t know how Scarlett does it, because while this book is thoughtful, emotional, and sometimes downright sad. It’s also laugh out loud funny, swoon worthy, scary, whimsical, and epic.

Lore’s nickname for Samara is “Wild One” HELP.
There’s a moment where Samara claims to Lore that she is worthless, and he says “You do not get to determine your worth to me.” And I cried. For a solid minute.

Nobody is perfect in this book, and that’s part of what makes it so enduring. Except for Fox… I love Fox. He’s perfect. Adorable. I love him.

I love this book with my whole heart. This is one of my favorite series of all time. And if you haven’t read the first book, Mountains Made Of Glass, please go read that, and then start Apples Dipped in Gold immediately after.

“You are a gift, you are my dream come true and my greatest wish.”

This was so much different than book 1. It leaned heavily into many fairytales- well known and pretty obscure. It’s darker and more violent.

I really liked it but it ended pretty abruptly.

There are nods to book 1, which I recommend reading.

DNF chapter I don’t remember and honestly don’t really care

🚩🚩🚩 call me crazy or maybe I’m just unique like the gorls in this genre but i dont find degradation and torment very sexy. 🤷‍♀️ who woulda thunk! 🚩🚩🚩

I truly and honestly cannot wait for these trope ridden books to die. I miss my PNR books from 5 years ago. You know, the ones that were actually written well and didn’t have to rely on abusing a fictional female character for shits and giggles.

Virginal very young human (or is she? 🤦‍♀️) with some tedious menial “gift” that makes her ✨special✨ Living the life of a stone aged peasant girl making bread or trying to feed her starving family or whatever the author put (even tho she talks like a 2024 teen), while men around her love to abuse her physically and emotionally to ensure she stays in line. Only to fall in love (or was it a forced marriage? Dont know don’t care) with an overpowered fae dude who also likes to abuse her physically and emotionally but his is different because he’s hot. And probably has a big dong.

Yah I’m over these type of overly done tropes. Every author trying to one up each other in how far they can degrade and abuse their FCs and get away with it. Seems like the more ARCs you have, the more you can get away with. 🚩

"This woman had carved her name in my heart long ago and I still bled from that open wound.

She was my curse and I wanted to be free."

I am SO upset. I loved this story. I so so so did. I recommend it with my WHOLE HEART but I hated the ending. It was too abrupt. I felt like it left a cliff hanger. Like, there was more that needed to be said or done or SOMETHING. I needed more closure. It all happened too fast for my liking.

Poor, sweet Samara. She endured so much abuse at the hands of her older brothers. They were abusive; mentally, physically and emotionally and she felt like she owed it to them to care for them.

Then, some random Prince of Rook happened upon her (as she was ready to unalive herself) and tried to save her. But, things go awry and here comes handsome Lore to save her. I actually do like Lore as a character. I also appreciate Fox (aka Fredrich; I need to know his back story)

I love the fact that these two books (Mountains Made of Glass) can be read as stand alone but are intertwined. The Prince of Rook in this story is the brother of the Prince of Rook from MMOG.

I am HOPING that down the line (there are seven brothers so I assume there will be seven stories) that maybe more will be explained. That's my biggest beef with these stories. They are fantastic, but not nearly long enough! I want more. I NEED more. But there were definitely some unanswered questions that just had me wanting more.

    Fredrich's back story?
Are Mouse and Rooster okay? Does she go back to get them?
What did Samara wish for, if she even got the chance? Did it have anything to do with Lore?
What's Lore's real name? If they are meant to be lovers.

    SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Oh my…. This read was so nostalgic and comforting that I can’t even explain it ✨

Story in itself is rather short and it feels like such a refresher - it had so many parts from our childhood fairytales but at the same time it was new and intriguing 🤩

The plot-line was quite simple and smoothly paced, so it was such a comfort to read. The reading style oH- takes me back to when I was little, reminded me of those old stories that you carry through generations 🥹 It was simple enough to absolutely enjoy the read!

Characters, for such a short story, are quite complicated. Samara works through her issues and struggles throughout the whole book, just as Lore tries to adjust to new reality and changes in his mind. There actually was one point that, for me, felt unfinished in Lore’s character development but it did not dull the overall experience of likeable and relatable characteristics 🫶🏻

All in all, this book is perfect as a palette cleanser as well as a refresher, and should be perfect for a quick enjoyable read that feels both familiar and new ⭐️

I would definitely recommend this to people that are fresh in reading fantasy + spice type of books because this has a perfect balance between both and the whole storytelling is written in a beautiful fairytale language 🥹

Live, laugh, love Lore and Samara ❤️

(1.25 ⭐️) De verdad tuve fé, pero volví a terminar decepcionada porque esto fue TERRIBLEMENTE MALO. Me quedé dormida y es un libro de menos de 200 páginas, eso es todo lo que necesitan saber.

I need these books to be longer. They’re so good, they’re so quick, they’re so engaging, I need them to be longer cause I need more 😭

I really enjoyed this one but I felt like there was more that could’ve been added to it. Give me a prologue or like a first half of the book to really flesh out this romance story plzzzzz.

But also I love me a good fae story and I need eight more of these books!!

  • Mackenzie

There are quite a few fairy tales woven together in this narrative, which makes for a fast moving plot. Unfortunately, a good portion of the details introduced are dropped with no explanation making the resolution feel unfinished even for an installment in a series. The dialogue between all characters is also incredibly uncanny and stiff making it very hard to feel immersed in the story.

I think everyone needs to read the author notes in this to see how brilliant and talented Scarlett is when she writes these retellings. I’ve been so vocal about how obsessed with how well she created the atod world and using so many myths - but if you understood what went into these fairytales - * pure love for her writing * you can see that Scarlett’s literary knowledge and understanding is perfection.

it’s safe to say that you can see a couple of more “popular” fairytale vibes in this, but there’s so many more that I’m sure people just don’t know! Especially if their fairytale background is mostly Disney - which is not a bad thing - but it truly only dabbles in what’s really out there. Especially when you look at what a lot of these fairytales looked like to start.

This whole book had me hooked from the very beginning to the end. There’s so much adventure, twists and character development that you never feel anything drag out. Samara’s character is real and relatable even in a world of talking creatures, glass mountains, golden apples and irresistible elven princes. Lore is just the right amount of broody and charm with just enough longing that I quickly adored. I loved Cas in book one, but it’s safe to say Lore just took number one. Though… I’m def interested in seeing what the others brothers have in store.

There’s a little bit of uncertainty and mystery throughout the whole book that has you guessing and trying to figure out the riddles.

The spice was spicy ans the tension was even better.

This series continues to have me hooked and obsessed. I will be continuing on FOR sure!

    ♾️✨

Five Stars. Five. Freaking. Amazing. Stars.

Listen Scarlett St. Clair is an automatic read for me. I love her. Even when I'm mad at her, I love her!

Poor Samara is stuck with her 3 POS brothers. They abuse her physically and mentally and they're trash. They help feed the town though so she feels like she needs to put up with their abuse to save everyone else from starving.

Lore is a doofus. An adorably obtuse, silly pants, doofus. Lore is sure he is cursed and the only one who can save him is Samara, the one he believes he is cursed to love. The one who relieved him of his hand when he thought they were in love and she betrayed him.

Now they're on an adventure together to find the golden apple so she can wish for the curse to be removed from him. This made easier because she doesn't seem to recognize him.

I loved this book. I love Samara and I love Lore and I love the Fox. Reading this made me want to reread Mountains Made of Glass. Or just reread all of my Scarlett St. Clair books.

Beloved, you please me simply by existing.

Well, I highlighted so many more quotes, but I’m afraid they might be spoiler-y, so this what you get! Anyway, THIS. BOOK! This is THE book guys. Lore and Samara are just the most adorable idiots (said lovingly) and I cannot stop thinking about them. The journey Samara takes in the book is raw and real, and it’s hard, it truly is, but the way she overcomes her fears and past to fight for love is so…admirable and refreshing to see, especially as a character who was trained to be timid. Lore? Lore is just, without giving too much away, is so lost in himself and his curse that he doesn’t see what is right front of him, even as his own actions prove it again and again, and his own battle to get to the ending is wonderful to watch. And Fox. How can I forget Fox?! Fox is so so so much fun, and he absolutely makes this story. He is witty and resourceful and everything you’d expect a fox to be, but a talking fox in an enchanted forest is on a whole other level, and I just love him! And I really really REALLY hated the villains in this one, which just continues to show you how amazing Scarlett is at invoking all the emotions in her writing. I can’t wait for the next Grimm adventure!

Scarlett St Clair knows how to set an atmosphere like no one else!! She expertly weaves the feel, the texture and grit of every aspect of her stories and it’s one of my favorite things about her writing. Apples Dipped in Gold is filled with atmospheric settings that lent to a fairytale dreamscape that felt classic but also slightly creepy (lol) while also dashing in lore and romance in every chapter. I love these Grimm fairytale reimaginings and can tell SSC puts a lot of work into researching meticulously to adapt the best story possible! Highly recommend and they would make fantastic fall seasonal reads!

  • Cordy

I enjoyed this, but not as much as I enjoyed Mountains Made of Glass. I felt like the author set the tone for how these stories would be told in MMOG but lost sight of that when writing this. It felt less like a fairytale and more like her other fantasy work. It also felt more rushed than its predecessor and it’s evident that she had a lot of great ideas, perhaps too many for the length of the book, but couldn’t really tie them together. Still a good read, and I’m really excited to eventually read about the other brothers as well.

  • Kaitlin

I LOVE THIS SERIES OMFG. I so wish these books were longer but that’s ok it just means I can read it in a day🥲 One of my fav MMCs of all time, I fear…..I fear I might love kind men……what’s wrong with me idk! I still love you slightly abusive mafia husbands I’ll never not love you but ooo lord something about a man treating a woman with respect has me hooked! Lmao

Also the male “friendship” in this book was so good I laughed multiple times I love them

  • Meg (megschapters)

A beautiful short fairytale retelling (includes lots of references to old fairytales - see authors notes) I loved the little touches and references throughout, I loved the little fox - one of my favourite side characters!

    True Fairytale

This was such a cute one. Nicer than the first. I love the retelling and interwoven fairytale. Ms. Scarlett does a great job. Can't wait to see what comes Cardic and his nun, lol.

    3.5/5⭐️
i like it more than MMG but unfortunately the ending is too abrupt 😩

  • Kirsten Lintott

While I loved the story (even though it was too short) the editing was super off with this one?

  • Ariel Sarver

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book, but not as much as Mountains Made of Glass. I felt like the ending of this was rushed. Still a good story, though!

  • Shelly

Rounded up, I did like MMOG better, but I love this series and will accept zero criticism. This one was more sweet and spicy whereas the first was spicy served with a side of vengeance. *chef's kiss*

The "just go with it and accept it because it is a fairy tale" is alive and well in this second installment. If you can't do that, you won't survive the Princes' tales.

Can't wait for the third one!!

  • Lindsay Whalen

I hate to even write this because I am such a fan of St. Clair. It is clear that she pours so much time and attention and research into the lore of her books. Her knowledge of classic and not-so-well-known fairytales along with the themes and history in them is always a treat.

This one missed the mark though. The pacing was rushed and multiple times I flipped back thinking I must have missed something. Many moments were convenient and took the easy way out which felt so out of place from her normal writing style. Walking away from this one really disappointed.

  • Dee

I thought the ending was a bit abrupt, but overall I really loved this book. I think that these fairytale novellas are really well done!

  • SJ Lynn

I stopped reading this around the 40% mark. I really enjoy the author’s earlier works but think her books are getting darker and darker. Which certainly appeals to a lot of readers, but just isn’t for me.

She gives accurate trigger warnings at the beginning of the book and so I was definitely pre-warned. But this was a difficult book to read given just how terrible the MFC’s brothers were and it seemed that it was going to keep those dark threads throughout.

  • Hannah

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. It was very intense and addicting it was hard not to read it in one sitting but I read half the book overnight. Very excited for the next story
