"I don't need a line to know what's considered good or bad, but if I did, there isn't a line I wouldn't cross for you."

When Rennick was thirteen, the gods bestowed upon him the name of his fated mate--a human girl. As the sole heir to the Mountain Kingdom, magic bound him to his kingdom until he ascended the throne on his twenty-fifth birthday, and as a human, she couldn't cross the magical barrier separating the humans from the fae. Heartsore and consumed with thoughts of her, he did the only thing he could and sent her anonymous letters and gifts…

Until he crossed the barrier into her kingdom to claim her as his own.

Six months after Amelia's thirteenth birthday, she received a strange letter from a fae boy claiming her as his mate. Humans weren't taught much about the fae, and one look at the horrifying doll meant to be her belated birthday gift solidified her suspicions that someone was playing a cruel joke. Except the letters and odd gifts kept coming. Against her better judgment, Amelia fell in love with her mysterious admirer throughout the years, certain they would never meet. But on her twenty-fifth birthday, her walk to work was interrupted by two familiar words she'd read a million times.

"Hello, love."

Viciously Yours is a new adult fantasy romance long novella/short novel of about 60k words/250 pages. It is fast-paced and focuses solely on the relationship between the two main characters. There is no overarching background plot. Example: Rebels attack the kingdoms, but there is no story as to why because it just is.

The couple does have minor obstacles, but there is no miscommunication trope, no third act breakup, and no cheating.

PLEASE NOTE: The male main character does a few morally black things to those he deems a threat to his relationship. There are no shades of grey.

CONTENT WARNINGS:
Orphaned heroine, gore, unethical kills and decisions by main characters, death of a parent, mature language, explicit sexual situations, graphic violence and death

if my man doesn’t cut off the skin on his arm because a wannabe ow touched him when he was distracted then i don’t want him. *i say as i have a whole ass husband who wouldn’t do that but i’m keeping him anyway*

Rennick was so fucking unhinged that i just….i love that man 😂 perfect example of green flags in romance, red flags in real life.

can we also get a round of applause for the most realistic anal prep/anal sex i’ve read in a long time…maybe ever 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

thank you jamie for an ARC of this. it was 10/10 over the top perfection.

  • Miki’s⚠️Safety Reviews⚠️

    🌟Brief Summary:
    MY NEW FAVORITE HERO!

❤️OMG! This is THE BEST OTT JP book I read in a while! The way Rennick obsesses over and loves Amelia is EVERYTHING!❤️
I NEED MORE ASAP! I haven’t enjoyed a read like this in a while!

-When a Royal Fae turns 13yrs old they are given their Fated Mates name by the Gods. Only they know this name. It does not mean love but is to ensure the magic and bloodline. Love is a bonus but not guaranteed.

-Rennick the Royal Fae of the Mountain Kingdom hears the name Amelia and his family is on the hunt to find and protect his mate till he is of age at 25yrs and he can claim her.

-But Amelia is an orphan in the Human Kingdom and this causes all sorts of problems. First and foremost being that she knows next to nothing about Fae and second Rennick can’t leave his lands till he’s 25yrs old to claim her. Amelia being Rennick mate must be kept a secret till he’s 25yrs old in order to protect her. If anyone finds out many would try to kill the mate to the Mountain Kingdom esp a human girl with no protection.

-Duty bound to his mate Rennick starts to write her letters. But to protect the identity of his mate she cannot keep the letters or write back. He also has to keeps many secrets from her till he can come for her. This goes on for 12 yrs during which they both fall MADLY IN LOVE with each other.

⭐️This is a fun entertaining and a whimsical story of 2 mates who are head over heels for each other and must fight obstacles to protect their love and get a HEA.

-Mild but definitely enough world building to enhance the story.

😍RENNICKS DEVOTION TO AMELIA IS UNLIKE OTHER! THIS MAN IS AAAAMMMMAAAZZZZING No other man will ever be as OTT amazingness for his mate than Rennick💯❤️

    ❣️Things I Liked/Loved❣️
    ❤️💯RENNICK💯❤️
Fuck this man is something else! If all hero’s were Rennick I would never be able to stop reading and I definitely would end up in a divorce and married to my book 😂 cause…😅man…. How could a real life man compare to RENNICK….🤷🏼‍♀️ yeah NOPE he can’t.

❤️LETS COUNT THE AMAZING WAYS OF RENNICK❤️

    ✅OTT JP AlPHA goodness EXTREME

    🔪Touch her and die☠️

✋🏻Making a mold of his hand incase she wanted a hand to hold instead of another boys hand!

    💯MINE MINE MINE

    ❤️His little mate

🍆How he made her a mold of his manhood in different sizes to use and get her ready for his 🍆 SIZE 👀

☠️Made all blonde male fae shave their heads cause she said she likes blonde hair when she was younger😅

🦊Sent little sweaters for her fox to keep him warm.

🩸Needing to Bite her to taste her blood so he can taste ALL of her.

🦉How Rennick stalks his mate during their 12yrs apart.

🔪🔪CUT HIS SKIN OFF WHERE OW TOUCHED HIS ARM🩸🔪🔪
HE NEVER LETS OW EVEN TOUCH HIM!!!!! EVER! So yes ladies he is a V!!!
Gotta love a man who is faithful to his one and only love❤️

😅How he learned to pleasure his woman without touching a OW ever! Just cause our man is a V doesn’t mean he isn’t gonna know EXACTLY how to please his mate😍

☠️Did you touch my mate with your dick? 🔪🩸 well we can’t have that 😅.

    💕They share the same birthday💕

‼️Amelia- I really liked how she took all of RENNICKS crazy with grain of salt and added her own spice for good measure. She may have been out of the loop on a lot of things but once she caught up she had her own possessive JPness to add to the mix. She was no push over.

Things I Did 💔 Not Like
‼️I didn’t like the OWD, Ora and the extremes she was able to go to against Amelia. I get Rennick only saw her a friend but it blinded him to her true intentions. But don’t fret once he catches on he absolutely will not let it slide. He would end ANYONES life that hurts his mate.

‼️How gut wrenching and it was when he felt her orgasm with OM! I hated that she did that considering he was so faithful. But she also didn’t know.

‼️I wanted more! This is definitely gonna be a reread for me. And my only complaint a I would have loved even more.
‼️I’m also a bit worried about the safety in the next books in the series. I don’t think the men will be V like Rennick and that might kill it for me. It seems like the other hero’s might have OW before their mates because of circumstances. And Roman? He was mates to the h twin sister first!? Yeah 😬 that’s not my jam! So unless the authors pulls some amazing things out of her ass I may not read future books in this series.‼️

love me a man that’s all about his woman

This man cuts a piece of his skin off after another woman touched him… now that right there is the type of energy I need 👏🏻

Besides BDE 🤭 which he definitely has 😮‍💨but anywayssssss 👀

I didn’t want this to end 😭; plus, this book is relationship-driven, which is my type of book 👀 but it also has world building that’s unique too 👏🏻

Rennick/Nick (13-25) is Royal Fae, which means he’ll: find out who his mate is at 13, get a familiar and mark at 15 (an animal that’s his ride-or-die/companion), gain all his power by the time he’s 25 which is when he can take over his kingdom. He also can’t leave until then, which means he can use his familiar to “check” 👀 on his mate 😅, but for her safety, he can’t reveal the truth of what they mean to each other and who he is as well.

Amelia (13-25) has been living in an orphanage since she was a child ☹️. She knows what it’s like to have to make ends meet. 6 months after she turns 13, she starts receiving letters from a Nick 👀. She doesn’t know if she believes what he tells her, especially because his letters always disappear, but she loves and looks forward to his letters. He also gets her gifts (questionable ones sometimes 😐).

Because they share their birthdate, on the day they turn 25, he’s ready to go claims his mate.

He hopes she’s ready for him 😅👀

    What I loved: potential spoilers
—gaaaahhh! How SWOOOOONY he is ❤️. All he does. All he prepares for. All he desires is his mate and I LUUUURVED IT ALL 🥹🫶

—the letters 🥹. Sigh. They not only melted my heart, but also made me laugh, and, well, also feel some tingles too 👀😉. Rennick has no business being this good

—the gifts he gets her 🫶. We won’t talk about the terrible ones Ora, the ow 🙄, picks out 😐. But so many were cute. Like…

—the fox sweaters 🥹. Sooooo cuuuute 😭, and then his JP side comes out when he makes the…

—mold of his hands 👀. So that she has hands to hold… Because no other man should be holding her hand 🤷🏻‍♀️. Lest that man wants to be hand less 🤣🫣🤡

—even the molds of his d were 👀🥹🔥🫶😉. This man thinks of it all 🤣. We need a man to be thorough 💁🏻‍♀️. He needs to make sure she’ll be ready for him 💅 so she needs all the help she can get 👀😉🤣🤣

    —he waits for her 🥹🫶

—the connection they have ❤️. Because he’s Royal Fae, he can feel all her emotions 🫶. Even when she’s… self😅 soothing 👀. She can try to hide her emotions from him, but she can’t 👀 since they’re mates ❤️

—he’s willing to shower in cold water for her 😭

—but also cuts the skin off his arm when Ora touches him… through his long-sleeve 🤣. He gots to make sure his queen Amelia feels secure in their relationship, and it’s only fair because he… well, he un alived the man she was with so… 😬

    —the reciprocity 😅

—the 🔥. It’s so 🥵💦. This male, who’s a v, is so good at ensuring Amelia feels anything and everything 😉. This is medium burn with some 🔥 happening at like 34% and full 🔥 by 60%

—his face… is her throne 😅. Yeah. I said it 🤷🏻‍♀️ but he said it first 😉🔥🤣

—the most realistic anal prep I’ve ever read in a book 👀other books need to take notes 💁🏻‍♀️

    —claiming, marking, biting 🔥

    —MINEMINEMINEMINE 😈

—he makes all men with blond hair cut their hair off 🤣 just in case 😅🤣🤣🤣. Look. I don’t make the rules 🤷🏻‍♀️. He does 🤣💁🏻‍♀️

    —he calls her love 🥹🫶😭

    —dual JPness 💅

—they BOTH put the OW in her place 😈. I love when the hero gets involved with taking out the trash 👏🏻

—the EPILOGUE 🥹. I loooove seeing the MCs in their future, and we get the futures of other characters too

    What I didn’t like/wanted more of:
—for it to be longer 😭

—I’m a little skeptical on the next books 😬. I hope we don’t have any loose males 😐. Sigh. But I’m also excited to find out what’s gonna happen next 👀

    Overall, I LOOOOOOOVED this ❤️

  • Southern Lady Reads (Crazy Busy-Will Catch Up!)

This is exactly what I thought it would be / what I needed to be. Very little plot. Just lots of 'he falls first' romance and I was into it. Def a brain candy read that I'm glad I got into!

  • Dani (Daniiireads)

Nothing like consummating a wedding with anal

  • RLbooks

Seeing this pop up over and over on my feed and most of my friends loving it, I had to read this. Unfortunately this wasn't a win for me. The author does warn that this isn't a complex, plot-driven fantasy and I was fine with that. She does a great job of introducing the key components of the world and includes a map. The author also stated that this was meant to be a fun and quick read with a side of "that's fucked up" lol. It's the latter that I think didn't gel with my personal taste.

The story focuses on Rennick (H) who's next in line as king of the fae Mountain Kingdom and the mate who he learns about at 13, Amelia (h), who's in the human kingdom. Amelia can't be claimed safely until she's older because of rebel activity so Rennick finds a way to communicate via letters, gifts, and watching over her the best he can. Young Amelia is confused by the attention, but also hopeful and she falls in love with him via the letters (though I wouldn't have based on what he wrote lol). When he fully comes into his powers and can cross the boundaries, he comes for her.

Written in third person, multi-POV (primarily the H and h but a couple side characters' POVs are briefly included). Slight om drama when h thinks the H may have moved on and she sleeps with an om (which H feels) and H also is jealous/possessive to the extreme wanting to maim or kill anyone who takes any interest in the h or who he perceives h may be interested in. Ow drama from a childhood friend of H's who thinks she should be the H's mate, but the H doesn't see the ow, he's only about the h, though the ow does cause some serious drama. H is a virgin but did gain academic experience by watching others have sex so he could learn to please his mate; h is a virgin to start but does sleep with om (not shown on page, shows H's upset reaction though and there is a brief description later).

I can objectively see why others loved the H and how OTT he was with the h and that he waited for his fated mate, he just wasn't appealing to me personally in other ways. I love possessive men (in books) but I have found that the way some authors write them are off-putting to me and this fell in that category for whatever reason. I also found the h to be immature and inconsistent so I just wasn't invested in their relationship. However, I devoured this book, it's written in a fast-paced, easily consumable way that it flies by so kudos to the author of achieving that goal. The steamy scenes are very detailed and long, which is typically a plus for me, but I found myself skimming them. There are some different touches like how Rennick sends Amelia physical copies of his dick so she can train for when they're together and there's also anal training/play.

I loved many of the details the author included for this world, like the animal familiars and their attitudes. The side characters were also interesting, though I side-eyed a couple of moments. However some of the twists at the end were odd to me and I had a hard time understanding why the author chose to go in some directions or spring some elements as a surprise. The ending is HEA and the epilogue was adorable, several years down the road of them in love and with a precocious child, as well as seeing them with the other fae royals. This review is kind of messy, but it just didn't work for this reader and I'm having a hard time wording why. It clearly works for a lot of other readers who also love possessive men though and I would encourage folks to give it a go if it sparks your curiosity! I don't have regrets that I tried it.

  • Grapie Deltaco

You know a book is about to be annoyingly bad when the author puts warning pages at the beginning of the book to let the audience know that no effort was put into the construction of this book, that there’s no plot, and “good luck” bc there’s a “50/50” chance that you’ll like it.

At that point, just keep in your drafts or something. This book doesn’t even qualify for the “it’s so bad it’s good/fun/funny/entertaining” category.

Everyone’s annoying and the smut is mediocre. If you’re gonna establish that you put zero effort into the world building, plot, and magic to focus solely on the romance then how did the romance end up being so sloppy and devoid of any chemistry ??? Where exactly did this author’s energy go into this???

You can’t be annoying AND boring 🤨🫵

  • astarion's bhaal babe (wingspan matters)

ofc bookstagram got to me again.
I was pretty pumped when I read the author's note about this book focusing more on romance than the plot because apparently my brain can't process heavy stuff at the moment and all I seem to need is effortless entertainment, but I unfortunately couldn't get into this story.
I've got nothing against the author or her story, really, the book just wasn't for me and I figured I'd rather dnf it than push myself to finish it only to give it a half-hearted ratings.

  • vi.isreading

Well that was I book I read.

  • Rebekah Macmichael

The idea for the plot was cute but the execution was so bad. Rennick was not only morally black- but a literal psychopath. Amelia had no personality and was in an emotionally abusive relationship without being aware since she had no other relationships at all in her life. The spice was gross and graphic and I ended up skipping most of it. There was no character development and the storyline was bad. It ended very strange and the epilogue didn’t match the vibe of the rest of the book. I was excited for this ARC but ended up very disappointed. ALSO the author has apparently never been around or seen a 13 year old boy- because the description of him being as tall and sexy as a grown man was not only completely inaccurate but also gross.

  • kaleigh

    4.5/5⭐️

Such an amazing book! I’ve never read a book by this author before but I will definitely be reading more!

Rennick was crazy possessive of his mate and even made every man in the kingdom who had blond hair shave their heads because Amelia (his mate) said she liked blonde hair when she was younger😭🤣

Rennick was also a clueless when it came to his childhood best friend wanting him😭 To make up for it, he did cut off his skin where the wannabe mate, Ora touched him one time. 🤣

This definitely could have been 5 stars, I found the writing super appealing. However, because of the OW drama and how Rennick was so clueless when it came to that, this is a 4.5 star read.

Before safety info, shout out to the author for making a BELIEVABLE anal sex/ anal prep scene for once!! I RARELY find books with believable anal prep/sex so this was refreshing.

    Safety info:😻😻 (includes spoilers)
    • Virgin H/ non virgin h - the h was only with one man before and the only reason she was with him was because she didn’t believe H was her fated mate and since he didn’t write to her for so long, she decided to sleep with another man. Unbeknownst to her, the H could feel that she was with another and H killed the man. h thought H was with a lot of OW because in his letters he sounded “experienced” but he was not. h regretted ever sleeping with another.
    • OW drama - H’s childhood bsf wants him and causes drama. She helps H pick out Amelia’s birthday gifts and picks out ugly looking clothes and things she knew Amelia would hate. She causes drama throughout most of the book but she got her karma. She also tries to get H to marry her by forcing a bond on him by distracting him and kissing him
    (it doesn’t work)
    • OM drama- h slept with one person before H and H kills him. h saw through H’s bsfs glamour one time and thought it was the H so she fucks herself imaging him. Finn doesn’t think of her that way though. No real drama just jealousy.
    • no condoms (if I remember right)
    • no on page pregnancy but she had kids in the epilogue!

Note for future books in the series:
    • no safety info was given on the other royals who I assume will have books but the H’s best friend/ guard Finn is experienced with woman and seems to be a slight manwhore.
    • I think it was a royal but maybe not- one was mentioned to have a fated mate bond with someone but she married another man so the bond broke and her sister is now the fated mate of the royal

  • **Tessa**

Creative but boring. The H was so dumb to not see the OW wanted him. The whole kingdom knew but he didn’t? Makes him seem kinda dumb 🤷🏼‍♀️

nothing against anal sex but the stretching and butt plugs kinda turned me off personally. That’s just a personal thing. She’s constantly stuffed with em and alll I can think is “gross feces”🤣😂🤣🤮🤮

also everyone is raving how he was a virgin and didn’t romantically touch another woman but no one cares that he was going around as a voyeur WATCHING other people have sex to learn how to please her. No thanks. I’d like to add had SHE done this he would have killed anyone and everyone she saw naked. The double standards in this book are ridiculous but everyone is just ignoring them because he didn’t have sex with anyone else. Is that our standard these days for romance?? Do whatever you want as long as it isn’t sex?? That’s a low bar. I’m kinda shocked how the same people who will say (and have said) this is cheating in an MC or mafia book are calling this romantic in this book? Why couldn’t they learn together?

Oh and everyone was swooning over the fact that he cut skin off his arm where the h saw OW touch him. Are we going to overlook the fact that he said he didn’t even notice meaning it probably happens so often he doesn’t even notice when she does it. Oh but Tessa he looks at her like a friend you say? Well he wouldn’t even have allowed her to HAVE a male friend but it was ok for one of his bff to be a girl who apparently is so comfortable with him she touches him? He can keep his damn skin and be loyal instead how bout that?

The heroine annoyed me. The hero was definitely infatuated. Don’t believe it was love yet at the point I stopped.
DNF 84%. Just didn’t care what happened.

I know you are all just shocked I have another unpopular opinion 🤣😂🤣😂

Now this was a fun little read, and I gobbled it up. I’ll admit going in I was afraid it would be young or fluffy. And the author’s note didn’t help…

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A LITERARY MASTERPIECE, THIS MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU.

And it might not be a masterpiece, but it’s an entertaining ride with a fiercely protective Fae King (Rennick) that will burn shit down before he lets anyone hurt his mate. (Amelia) It even has a tenacious wannabe OW (Ora) that won’t quit.

As I said in my last review
Mansions I absolutely love crazy people (in fiction) especially when they’re OBSESSED with their love interest. Like they’d smack a wannabe bitch in the face for daring to touch them or cut someone’s tongue out for disrespecting his h.

And where Dorian left me disappointed… Rennick delivered. He was nutso over Amelia.

Bottom Line- The plot is very focused on the craziness of the relationship, so it’s not great with world building (very simplistic and info dumped at the front of the book) or development. But, if you love an obsessed OTT H paired with an equally crazy h (and don’t dig deep) give it a shot. It’s not really dark, but it’s not fluffy either. There’s a great epilogue several years out. All the main couples are sorted but there was a teaser of a possible book 2. (my notes section is full)

Roman was the Tropical King, and one of Amos’ best friends. The Tropical King and Queen were an anomaly in Eden. Roman’s original mate, Vivian, broke their royal mating bond by secretly marrying another man. When Roman turned twenty-five, the gods granted him a new mate—Violet, Vivian’s twin sister.

    Safety-

I am jealous of yesterday me, because she gets to read this book for the first time.

Seriously guys, this book was brilliant. It was hilarious from the word Go, right up til the end.

The author advises not to take this book seriously, so if you want some fantasy, written with a spectacular dry sense of humour, go ahead, you will not regret this one.

    3.5 stars

What a fun, easy and spicy read! I needed something that I wouldn’t have to turn my brain on to read, but I still wanted to have a good time and enjoy it. This was exactly what I wanted! Was it perfect? No, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

So a few months ago, I saw a random Tiktok promoting this book. It was described as fated mates who can't be together until they are 25 years old so he writes her letters while they wait. It instantly sounded SO GOOD! I immediately signed up for an ARC from an author I have never read. I received that ARC yesterday, started the book and finished it within 24 hours. This book is slightly longer than a traditional novella at 277 pages and I just DEVOURED it. I couldn't stop reading. This is not a full out fantasy book with tons of world building. There is no over-arching plot with a villain or crumbling kingdom to save. This is about a boy and girl who fall in love through words and get their happily ever after in the end. There is some drama but it doesn't last long. The author even admits that this will not be a book that everyone is looking for, especially if you are used to intense fantasy books/series. This is a GREAT romantasy beginner book. It introduces a reader to concepts slowly that are easy to understand while still having that romance-centric plot. I can't wait to recommend this book to everyone I know!!!

It is broken up into two main parts: before they met and after they met. The first part is 30% of the book, so we don't have a ton of time to wait. On Rennick's 13th birthday, he hears the name whispered to him of his mate: Amelia. They search the kingdoms far and wide and she is finally found at an orphanage. Due to concepts explained in the book, she cannot leave the human kingdom and he cannot leave the Mountain Kingdom. He is slated to be become King on his 25th birthday when he comes into his full powers. That is also when he gets to leave and retrieve his mate.

The first 30% is super cute. We get letters written by a 13 year old boy who wants his mate to know him. But he is still a 13 year old boy. He has no idea how to talk to a girl or what gifts to buy. Its precious. Over the years (especially on her birthdays) she gets 200 letters from him. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) we do not get to read every single letter. I imagine many of them were incredibly dull and we were given the more exciting ones as readers. Now that I am obsessed with the book and the characters, I kind of want to read all 200!

Amelia cannot write him back. Its due to safety concerns which are explained in the book. There are times where he writes every week and times where there are months between letters. During one drought, she chooses to move on from him with another and that gets so intense because Rennick can FEEL her moving on through the bond(if you know what I'm saying). He does not react well to this lover she has taken.

Rennick is described (by the author) as a burnt cinnamon roll. He is so sweet to her and will give her the world - completely sacrificing EVERYTHING else. He would burn the world down for Amelia and he makes a ton of choices in this book that show his morally black side. He is a dirty talking possessive alphahole on a mission for her heart. What could be better than that?

Now, this is a 5 star book from me due to vibes, characters, and the unputdownable writing. This book is NOT without plot holes or irritations. I am choosing to ignore those plot holes wholeheartedly. I am PUMPED that this will be a series of standalones because although the world building isn't too intense- its too good to leave this as one book. I need more! I need the other kingdoms stories. I just want MORE MORE MORE MORE!

And I leave you with this gem of a quote:

"Everyone has a moral line they won't cross. I don't need a line to know what's considered good or bad, but it I did, there isn't a line I wouldn't cross for you....I WILL WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CHEST WITH THE BLOOD OF ANY MAN WHO TRIES TO COVET WHAT IS MEANT TO BE OURS. INNOCENT OR NOT"

    Should I read in order?
This is the first in the Fae Kings of Eden series.

    Basic plot:
Rennick knows he has a mate at age 13. Letters arrive to her until her 25th birthday, when he comes in person to collect her.

Give this a try if you want:
    - fantasy romance
    - fated mates
    - fae hero/human heroine
    - epistolary
    - well-endowed hero
    - dark hero/villain hero
    - connected emotions (they can feel each other’s strong emotions, even from a long distance)
    - other woman/other man drama
    - tattooed hero
    - virgin hero (he doesn’t act like it though – they had ‘places they could go to watch and learn’)
    - higher steam – 7 scenes

    Ages:
    - I think they are both around 25

    First line:
Rennick didn’t know which frightened him more; the voices in his head no one else should hear, or the name those voices whispered and what it meant.

    My thoughts:
    Our author opens with
If you are looking for a literacy masterpiece, this might not be for you.
Now, I WASN’T looking for a literary masterpiece! And I can let so much go in a book. And this COULD/SHOULD have been so good to me. I was so hopeful. It had so many things I could have loved – it maybe implemented just a touch differently.

I feel bad but this book – I struggled so bad. I rage finished it.

It didn’t get too far in before I realized I was having a disconnect with the… writing style? I guess? So if you try it and don’t see any issues then my complaints probably won’t be relatable. And I truly hope you enjoy it if you try it.

Now I put off my review forever because I just could not open this book back up and go over all my notes. So I’ve definitely lost some of my rage disappointment since then and will hopefully be a bit more level-headed.

I never was able to like Rennick. He was like...the caricature of a villain hero. I wanted a villain hero – I wanted a dark main that was going to seduce our heroine through letters, and then burn the world down for her. I felt like I got an immature brat. Maybe reading the scenes of him being younger (the story starts and he’s 13 I think?) I just never left that head space, I don’t know.

When he’s 13/14 and he wants his mate NOW
When she explained why, his father agreed, but upon finding out the news, Rennick destroyed his father’s study in a fit of uncontrollable rage.

I liked Amelia a bit more than Rennick, but not much. I didn’t get much beneath the surface from her.

The writing – the 4 kingdoms are called Desert Kingdom, Mountain Kingdom, Tropical Kingdom, and Garden Kingdom. Guess what the human kingdom is called? Human Kingdom. I swear my mouth fell open when I read that. The only thing I could really get to know about these kingdoms were that they were...in the desert, in the mountains, in a tropical area, and...the garden kingdom was nice. And going in I was SO EXCITED that Applegate openly says she’s focused on characters and not the plot – That is what I love in romance! I don’t want a ton of political intrigue, or boring pages of telling of all the fantasy things...I like character focus. But I need more than whatever this is. It turns out I do have a minimum.

I enjoyed some of the letters. I LOVED THE IDEA OF THIS BOOK!! Oh my gosh epistolary exchanged between fated mates who cannot meet for a number of years???? It’s PERFECT for romance! But...I was so disappointed. The letters got weird. They didn’t drive up tension for me. Amelia went from hating him to suddenly falling in love with him after off page letters. WHAT? What made her fall in love with him? She just hated him! I wanted to fall in love with them! And you just gave me weird letters and took away the love and then just told me it was there… (argh I’m getting bitey all over again)

I also love jealousy in a hero. Even over the top. And even leading to murder, etc. And I get it’s marketed as morally black which means without conscience. But I struggled with him murdered an innocent side character. I just wish there had been the tiniest bit of push back from Amelia. But the fact that Amelia is the one that kind of encouraged it makes it worse. I guess that’s a line for me? If she had changed her mind and he had been forceful or something I would have had no issue…

Overall I wanted to love this book – it has so much that I could have loved – but I felt like I was reading an immature jealous (not in a good way – like I’m pretty sure they are going to be jealous of each other. Will he cut her hands off if she masturbates? 😂) relationship and it did not give me any feels or romance :( I am sad. Please don’t let my ranting deter anyone, it obviously has worked for so many, this is just my own personal take.

Now I’ll just drop some random quotes and thoughts

Content warnings: These should be taken as a minimum of what to expect. It’s very possible I have missed some.

    Spoilers ahead

One of the reasons why I rate this book so highly is because this is one of a very few times that the H found his one and stayed celibate while waiting for her. So many times the H would be a manwhore until he gets to claim his woman and I'm beyond sick of that bs
One of my very few 5 star reads because this H was exactly how I like em

I knew I'd love this book just from the dedication 😂

As stated by the author this isn't a literary masterpiece it's a fantasy romance that's focused on the romance more than anything else
A Fae prince finds his mate at a young age but she's human and he's unable to go to her until he's older. Years of letter writing until he's finally able to claim the woman meant for him

    ******
I really enjoyed this one, the H knew she was his mate and he never wanted anyone else.
The h however not having the bond as he did and never meeting him ended up having sex with someone else before meeting him.
He was deliciously j/p and ALL about making her happy. He cut off the skin where another woman had touched him!!!!!!!! I'd like to have his babies atp

    No cheating
    Virgin H
h only had sex once before
OW drama from a childhood friend who was completely delulu. He held absolutely no interest in her

***The ending felt like a crazy rush because so much information was just thrown at me I was dazed. Looking forward to the other kings getting their own books hopefully they're as loyal as this one

There isn’t much I can say about this book that I haven’t already screamed about on the internet and in voice notes to friends. Rennick is a raging lunatic, and I’m obsessed with him in a way that is diagnosable. Amelia is the love of my life.

--HE FLAYED THE SKIN OFF OF HIS OWN ARM BECAUSE ANOTHER WOMAN TOUCHED IT--

If I need to say more, you don’t deserve this book, tbh.

I seriously didnt want to do this, as the idea of the plot is really creative...it just didnt execute well for me. So its a DNF at 30%. I really wanted to like this but i was struggling with the characters and I forced myself to read the last couple of chapters before giving up. I just cant get into the rest of it 🤷🏽‍♀️ Gave off huge Wattpad vibes. Sowwi.

    My Rating: 3.5 Stars

I really liked this one! This reads like a classic paranormal romance novel. The world building is there but it takes a backseat to the romance. The hero is deliciously bloodthirsty and murderous in the BEST ways. I loved him! The heroine was very accepting and open-minded which was great to read about. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series because I really like the world the author started building.

I love a crazed Hero as much as the next girl but sometimes the reactions Rennick had just felt forced and way over the top. Maybe if there was more character development between him and Amelia I would have understood some of his reactions but as it was I just didn't.

4.25 ⭐️ Fae King mated to a human girl...

but it's really not what it looks like. This book was so, so entertaining! I don't usually enjoy dark romances or MMC's who are straight-up morally black, but this might be my one exception.

    Full RTC!

Edit: Also, this book fully cured me of the massive reading slump I've been fighting to get myself out of for the entire month of January. February couldn't have started better!
