Caseous Reed is an eighteen-year-old orphan who is about to graduate high school. Graduating high school means leaving his orphanage and getting into the real world. However, weeks before graduation, he connects with La'Toya Porter, his semi-popular classmate. Connecting with her unknowingly changes his entire world.
La'Toya Porter is an eighteen-year-old scholar who is about to graduate high school and move miles away to attend college. As graduation approaches, she enjoys her last moments as a high schooler with her best friends and, of course, with her newly befriended classmate, Caseous.
After La'Toya and Caseous's first interaction, La'Toya instantly becomes infatuated with Caseous, so she seeks friendship with him. Caseous is what society would call odd or weird. He dresses and acts differently than his peers. Unlike most of his peers, La'Toya likes his uniqueness, and the two develop an incredible bond and friendship. As time goes on, they face many adversities. Will their bond be strong enough to endure these challenges, or will it turn into something more deviant?

Wow! 4.5✨Deviant was such an unexpected yet pleasant experience. This gem captured my attention from the beginning. It tackles child welfare, neglect, and substance abuse, amongst other things. High school seniors, Caseus and Toya, formed an unexpected friendship. They had different backgrounds but were resilient and had to overcome obstacles. In the opening scene, seven-year-old Caseus is introduced during a CPS removal. During his senior year, Caseus lives in an orphanage; he doesn’t fit in with his classmates and does not care about senior activities. Toya becomes his partner for a project. Their bond quickly formed, and Toya helped him to open up. It was cute and refreshing to see Caseus have a normal friendship and extended family. At times it seemed that Toya was obsessed with him, but I think she was intrigued and smitten by his story. I think the author tackled the story well, even the heavy topics. It was clear that the characters had feelings and were protective of each other. However, I was sad at how their friendship ended. The ending alludes to their story just being started; I may be wrong, but I think Toya is pregnant, lol! I truly enjoyed this story; I read it in one sitting and cannot wait for the second book.
