“The Blue Glow” by Lisa Hosokawa, about a Japanese soldier who returns to his home in Hiroshima looking for his mother. It's graphic in its depiction of the ravages left behind by the atomic destruction of the city. Not for the faint of heart, but very, very good. I especially appreciated the hearth spirits, the ancestral spirits that are revered at the center of every household. Such a sad story.
"The Cursing of Herman Willem Daendels" by A. W. Prihandita is another heartwrencher. This one is set in the early 17th century, in present day Jakarta, Indonesia, and tells of a grieving mother who wants revenge on the leader of the Dutch East India company for the death of her son in the construction of a building project. Colonialism, slavery, violence, death - these are all present in this poignant story of the mother's quest to make sense of the world after her son's death. -
