Many see the world in terms of black and white.
There are clearly defined societal norms, and multiple diagnoses to categorize everything that falls outside of those set confines.
Unfortunately, nothing is that simple and clear cut when family members or loved ones are involved.
If you ask most people that knew my brother what they remember about him, and some of the first words to come from their mouth would be "Paranoid Schizophrenia".
However, to those that knew him best, he was just "Dan".
My brother was a talented artist, pianist, and one of the most creative minds I have ever met. Unfortunately, his time on this earth was short, and many of his talents were hidden from the world due to self-imposed isolation enacted by the disease.
During the course of his life, Dan had expressed the desire to share his art, writing, and ideas with the world.
This book is my attempt to do just that...to share his creativity with the world, and help others to understand who he was as a person.
It is also my sincere hope, that this writing can also help other families coping with mental illness. The challenges in Dan's life were truly heart wrenching, and held a great deal of tragedy. However, there were also a lot of good times and blessings in the time we were able to spend with him.
Never give up on those you love. Mental illness presents many challenges, but it does not define the person, and does not change who they are, or what they mean to you. I hope you enjoy learning "The Truth for Dan Lopp".
