2.5, rounded up.
Even though young playwright Arbery already has a Pulitzer nomination under his belt - and has achieved great success as a writer/producer of the TV series 'Succession' - I just really don't 'get' his plays. Although they appear to be concerned with the real world, they also operate on a non-naturalistic level, and I'm never quite sure what they are trying to say (... and in reading several interviews, I am not even sure HE knows what they are 'about'!).
This revolves around four characters stuck in the titular town in Texas, one of whom is a young woman with Down syndrome, who has been modeled after one of the playwright's seven sisters. The character was played in its off-Broadway premiere by acclaimed actress Jamie Brewer (of 'American Horror Story' fame - who was a client of the LA offshoot of the Media Access office, which I worked with for a dozen years - and whom I've met briefly), and one must applaud at least the inclusion of an accurate depiction of a person with that disability.
But the rest of the play just didn't hold together for me - and it received mostly mixed reviews:

this was an amazing depiction of disability and self discovery. people are much more than the identity or face that the world sees. we are multitudes, including disabled people. beyond that it’s also just a beautiful story of friendship and the complicated feelings of being a person with history.
