The Night Before Christmas Reviews

While this isn't the most meaningful Christmas picture book you could read, it is probably the most hilarious, with its detailedly (I made that word up) staged photos of dogs acting out the original Night Before Christmas text. The kids and I get into uncontrollable fits of laughter every year when we read this, especially because they are actual photos of dogs living in a human world with clothing, wigs, and human hands. It is really a perennial favorite that brings us together. And for that reason, it is one of the most important Christmas books we read each year.

There is also a Little Red Riding Hood book by the same author that we got from the library once. I should really own that one too, and any others by the same people.

2023: 11yo made a version for Christmas last year that was just like this one, but with the heads of the kids' pet rats and rabbit. So funny! We read them both together this year.

William Wegman is a photographer story teller in which all of his characters are played by his Weimaraner dogs. Mama, Papa, the children, Santa, each reindeer... they're all played by dogs (with human hands). It's a very imaginative way to illustrate Clement C. Moore's classic Christmas poem.
