The Knowles family has been involved in competitive swimming and sailing in The Bahamas for almost a century. We can trace our love of the sea back to Captain John Henry "Harry" Knowles and his home overlooking the Nassau Harbour in the late 1800s. As a result of pursuing our love of sailing and swimming, there was at least one member of the Knowles family representing The Bahamas at the Olympic Games as a coach or athlete for sixty consecutive years from 1948 to 2008. This passion has also given us incredible opportunities to participate in local and international competitions, to travel and form friendships with people from around the world, and most importantly, to glorify God with the talents and abilities He has given us.
This book serves as a comprehensive history of competitive swimming in The Bahamas since the 1930s, as well as a memoir of the six decades and counting that I have spent as a competitive swimmer and coach. My wife, Nancy, and I have also devoted a significant part of our lives to teaching young Bahamians how to swim through our life-changing programme called Let's Swim Bahamas.
