Still reeling from her last case, Detective Isobel ‘Bel’ Emerson finds comfort in both her dog and her newfound friendships, but when she and her new partner, Detective Gold, are called to the site of a bear attack, they discover something far more the body of a young woman posed inside a cabin where the furniture is all too big. And to make matters worse, the cabin is located on Eamon Stone’s property.
As the detectives race against the clock to find the killer before he murders another girl, Bel struggles with her growing attraction to Eamon. He’s once again a person of interest in her investigation, and while she knows she should stay away from him, she can’t fight the thread of fate knitting them together. She also needs Eamon’s beast to help with her case because as more evidence is revealed, the more Bel fears a new predator has come to Bajka. The question is this hunter man or monster?
Loosely inspired by Goldilocks & the Three Bears, Forensics of a Fable is book 2 in the Autopsy of a Fairytale series, a crime procedural romantic suspense perfect for those who like dark fairytales, murder mystery/crime procedurals (like AMC's The Killing, Netflix’s Lucifer, or NBC's Hannibal), romance, found family, and a hint of fantasy. Each book will be based on a different fairytale, but Bel (and her Beast) will connect them all, her story ending on small cliffhangers in each book.
Forensics of a Fable (Autopsy of a Fairytale, #2) Reviews

Oh my God just hook up already!
-
Goldilocks & the three bears but make it a serial killer investigation.
Wow! I'm absolutely hooked on this series.
After the brilliance of the first book, I was worried the next book wouldn't measure up, but it was just as thrilling (even though the author may have foreshadowed the killer a bit too obviously). I'm completely invested in Bel's and Eamon's evolving relationship. If you're into slow-burn romances, this book takes it to a whole new level of sloooooooooooow-burn x100.
And that cliffhanger! Excuse me, but who is WENDY DARLING?! I'm literally dying of suspense waiting for the next book!
I still can’t believe i didn’t realize this was a fantasy until the end of the first book. -
THIS IS SPOILER-FREE WITH AN ANALYTICAL REVIEW AND ESCAPISM REVIEW.
Series: Second book in what looks to be a trilogy.
Genre: Supernatural Crime Romance
Tropes: pining, magic crime
POV: third person, primarily the FMC but some passages in the MMC.
Spice Rating: 0, not even a kissing scene.
Triggers: murder, blood, gore, stalking
Bel has only had a couple of weeks off after solving who was behind the killing spree that nearly killed her. Now she’s back and her only worry is trying to resist the evil – but hot as hell – creature that is Eamon Stone. That is until someone starts killing people again, Goldilocks style. Bel, with a new partner, her dog in tow and a growly, protective Eamon by her side, really can’t seem to catch a break.
Analysis Review: 4 stars
While I can’t recommend this book enough for those who want to escape life, there were some parts of this book that needed work in terms of analysis. The writing style was good, but I think some parts needed a little bit more description. New characters like Bel’s father (Reese) and her new partner (Gold) are refreshing in amongst the familiar characters. However, the relationship between Bel and Eamon is a little quick, for lack of a better word. The book starts with her being wary around him because she’s scared of having feelings for him, and suddenly, she can’t get enough of him. We also don’t get a lot of background into Eamon as a supernatural creature - what he is and what his ‘powers’ are, which I really want to know. It had just enough world-building to make a fake town feel like a real place as well.
Escapism Review: 4.95 stars
I read the first novel, and I really enjoyed it, but I LOVED this book. I don’t know what it is about the crimes, but I’m trying to figure out whodunit every time I think about putting the book down. Like, is it supernatural, are the clues too obvious to be who I think it is, is Bel a specific target again? And then the romance between Bel and Eamon. I swear, there was no kissing or spice, but the tension and obvious pining and obsession Eamon has with her had me kicking and screaming at 1 a.m. Cannot recommend this book enough. Like, the first was good, but it was an introduction to how good this one was. The only thing that ruined it was the cliffhanger, which felt a little weak. -
"Forensics of a Fable" by Nicole Scarano, the second installment of the Autopsy of a Fairytale series, receives a middling 3-star rating from me. While I found this book slightly more enjoyable than its predecessor, it still left something to be desired. One aspect I appreciated was the opportunity to delve deeper into the characters and their backgrounds. Learning more about their histories added depth to the story and enhanced my understanding of their motivations and actions.
However, despite the added depth, I found the plot somewhat predictable. I anticipated the ending fairly early on, which diminished some of the suspense and excitement for me. "Forensics of a Fable" offers an improved experience compared to the first book, but it still falls short of delivering a truly captivating read. While it provides valuable insights into the characters, the plot's predictability detracts from its overall impact. A 3-star rating reflects my mixed feelings about the book. -
3.5 stars
I'm loving this series. Seamlessly continues from Autopsy of a Fairytale.
In this one,
Detective Bel Emerson gets a new partner, Olivia Gold.
There is a new beast in town and a new serial killer who won't stop until they get it "just right."
Aemon Stone is still smoldering for our Bel; this Hallmark romance has tension, but it remains PG. I'm hoping book three will give us, at least, some passionate kisses.
Though the killer is easily guessed, this storyline still had a few nice plot surprises.
I enjoyed the overall pace, but I felt the ending dragged a bit jn the wrap up.
Read it for the darkly different Fairytale retelling murder mystery. -
This is a romantic suspense very loosely based on Goldilocks and the three bears. It's more suspense than romance, but I'm beginning to like Eamon more and I just wish him and Bel would get together already!
This book was a pretty quick read for me. The author did a good job keeping up the suspense, throwing in red herrings, and giving me all sorts of anxiety for different characters. I wish there was more between Bel and Eamon but maybe they'll progress things in the next book. -
Great
This was a thriller of a read. I wasn't prepared for the story to go the way it did. Whoever reads this story I warn you to hold on to your seat. This author gives plot twists that leaves your mind reeling. -
ok
1.) this author needs to hire an editor
2.) if a man ever interrupted my sacred sandwich eating time even if it was in a romantic way i would not hesitate to throw hands
3.) maybe i did have fun! u know this author was a hannibal girlie -
Dark romance is a little bit of an odd genre and I'm not entirely sure it's my jam. However, the trappings of the crime thriller crossed with fairy tale is still an interesting enough concept to keep me going.
-
I can’t get over how great these books are! I cannot wait to get my hands on the third one this month! Once I start a book in the series, I just cannot put it down!

REVIEW:
Forensics of a Fable was filled with so many twists and turns with a few suspects on who could have been the killer which made it fun to read. Bel's relationship with Eamon has changed as they have gotten closer & her world is getting larger as now she knows there are different creatures besides her beast. Her new partner Detective Gold seems to be just what Bel needs to help her deal with the death of her previous partner. It was fun reading the interaction between Bel and Detective Gold as they are almost complete opposites in both personality and experience in Homicide.
An emotional moment I loved reading had been when Bel's father Reese made a surprise visit to Bajka as she really needed to see him after so much had happened to her in her previous case and the new one that she was investigating. Her father is her rock so she was very happy to have him with her as she tried to solve this new case and it showed a new side to Bel that made her a much more relatable character. A very surprising moment for me to read had been when Bel finally found out that it had been Abel who killed those two women and kidnapped Gold.
At first it surprised me because there were never any hints that he might be the killer but in the end I kind of knew it. Finding out that the weirdo Abel had been the killer who had been obsessed with Bel from the start which I now feel like it was hinted he was evil. In the previous book he always seemed to be around Bel in such a creepy way which really kind of escalated in this book when he thought he met Reese being close to Bel until he had been told that he was her father. Now to read Bel's next criminal case! -
After solving the bizarre case, Bel Emerson meets her new work partner, Olivia Gold, a newcomer to the role of investigating homicides, and so she was starting out in a small town.
Bel, in turn, was trying to recover from all the scare and discoveries since the last case, with the constant approach of millionaire Eamon Stone, who seemed to have developed a fixation on her.
A new case arises when a hiker is found on a trail having been attacked by a large animal, perhaps a bear. However, this case ends up leading them to yet another bizarre homicide: the case of doll women, wearing old nightgowns and sitting on furniture that is either very small (like children's) or very large, and nearby, a bowl of porridge, an allusion to the fairy tale Goldlock and the Three Bears.
To make matters worse, each victim was found in a cabin hidden among Stone's lands.
Was he involved in these crimes? Or did someone want to implicate him in the crimes?
But the case takes on a new dimension when the kidnapper-murderer reveals who his target has always been...
This book can be read as a stand alone, however, for those who have read the previous book, the understanding will be much better.
Bel finally discovered who was behind the attack - and near death - that she suffered in NY, and with the case solved, she finally put an end to her nightmares.
However, now, she had a new thing to worry about: Stone's presence in her life.
Even though their relationship is a slow burn (actually, no burn at all, because there is certainly a lot of sexual tension, but they never get to the hot parts...Urgh!), with each new appearance of him we feel that there is much more behind all that, and all the devotion, fascination and passion he feels for her.
A new handsome man arrives in town, also attracting the attention of women - which sets off an alert in our heads - and everything starts to fall into place very well.
It's not an erotic book. There are no hot scenes. The plot is focused on the cases to be solved... and this strange connection between Bel and Stone.
I can't wait for the next one.

This was a super exciting release for me! I devoured the first book. The concept is great, very criminal minds meets once upon a time, and I was excited to see the story for book two.
The plot is great. There are twists and turns and I had multiple theories throughout, some which turned out right and some wrong.
I liked that we got to meet Isobel's dad, and watch her develop friendships with Violet and her new partner. It was great to see her really building her little tribe.
I loved getting more of a development between the relationship with Isobel and Eamon. I liked the duel POV as well. My biggest gripe is we are getting the worst slow burn ever. I love a good slow burn. But we're now two books in and NOTHING. This book didn't even have a steamy kiss. I know she said this series would be more PG13, so I've accepted that we're not gonna get actual spice. I figured at least fade to black or something. But we didn't even get a KISS. Like come on. It's really frustrating, especially when the relationship has been brewing since book one and all the events of book two.
But, I will keep reading the series. The story is great. The thriller aspect is really good. And I guess I'll just keep torturously waiting for SOME kind of spice to happen... -
Much like the first book, this is not a retelling , but instead a thriller with fairytale Easter eggs sprinkled throughout.
I couldn't wait to see what happened to Bel after the first book, and Scarano didn't disappoint. There are more twisted murders, unusual characters, things going bump in the night, and a lot of obsessive behavior. It's twisty and weird, and I really enjoyed it. Again, the actual book is more of a 3 star for me, but I can't help bumping it up because of the creativity.
Spoiler alert! I want to make an observation that doesn't give any plot details away, but does give some details away, so I'm hiding it here:
On to book 3!! -
Giving this 3.8 stars supposedly and here are the reasons why:
1. I still like the premise of the whole fairytale meets Criminal Minds. In a scale of 1-5, I'd give 3 or 5 stars whe it comes to how dark it is with the crimes which is totally fine.
2. I feel like there are more evident plot holes in this 2nd book. IIt has more chapters but surprisingly, I didn'yñt find this book meatier when it comes to the story than the 1st.
3. I noticed since book 1 some itty bitty teeny weeny similarities with Twilight when it comes to the dynamic of the relationship between the 2 emcees and their romantic encounters. It doesn't bother me one bit but I just wanna put it out there that I've noticed that it's there.
4. I still love the fact that Cerberus is a guaranteed mainstay to this series. I appreciate the incorporation of pet loving in this entire series.
Still looking forward to the 3rd book. Looks like it will be inspired by Peter Pan which is one of my favorite stories and fairytale character. -
When they say slow-burn they MEAN sloooooooow -burn. The romance is there and it's simmering away in the background but this series is definitely a marathon not a race. Strangely enough I don't mind it because the romance and tension between Eamon and Bel is done well. However, I really could do with a kiss or something by now.
The story is enjoyable and I like the different take on the fairytale theme. I did find this book to be quite predictable and I knew who the culprit was from about halfway through the book. You don't need to be Poirot to figure it out. It didn't stop me from having a great time while reading this second book in the series and I will continue with the rest.
Be warned, you need to read these books in order. Each story is a completed mystery but it follows Bel and Eamon and the development of their relationship. There are also references to the mystery from the first book in this one. -
I'm not sure how it's possible but I enjoyed this book even more than the first!
I loved seeing how Bel and Stone's characters grew closer. Her dad was an awesome character to be added and I liked him a lot. And Gold, I was unsure of at first but she is just lovely too.
Again, as with the first I guessed who was who almost right away. The hints were well placed but there were still times when I wondered if I'd gotten it wrong.
The chemistry between Bel and Stone was smoldering and I long for more.
And Cerberus is most definitely the bestest of boys!!! That dog deserved every steak he's given and then some.
That ending though... I'm so glad the next book is already out so I can start reading it right away.
If I had more hours in a day that I had available to read, this would have been devoured in a day easily. I didn't want to put it down. -
While reading Autopsy of a Fairytale, I wasn’t sure if I would want to read beyond that first book. Forensics of a Fable has hooked me. Isobel, Eamon and Cerberus our characters that I have come to adore. The intensity between Isobel and Eamon is palpable. Their devotion to one another without sex is the most endearing. I am sure their relationship will get to that level but the journey to that point is well written and heartfelt. Cerberus’ devotion to both of them always makes me want to hug my furry baby more.
I enjoy the murder mystery aspects of Scarano’s storytelling and she adds the supernatural in a way that doesn’t take away from the murder/mystery or overpower it.
I hope that she’ll do a story for Gold and her man-bear. ❤️ -
Methodical and Dull
Even though the first book in the series dragged, I hoped this book would be an improvement. Unfortunately it proved to be just as dull and methodical as the first book. The writing is not bad, it’s just the story lacks excitement and given the fact this is a murder mystery, that’s not a good thing. Once again, it was very easy to pick out the villain and then it became a waiting game for the police to catch up. The “romance” between Bel and Eamon was virtually non existent aside from the constant reminders that the hero resembled a “chiseled god” who followed Bel like a puppy dog. For a relatively short book this was a very boring, laborious read. -
Full content (sex, language, violence) review:

PROS:
- The cover and the title (again)!
- A quick and fun read that was much more enjoyable than the first one. It built onto the characters and relationships from the last book and rounded out the personalities more
- There was more variability in plot and events than book one
- The fairytale aspect. I love retellings and appreciated the way the stories were turned into murders
CONS:
- Once again, the plot was kind of predictable and rushed. The predictability comes more from the fact that there's really only a few characters in the books.
- I REALLY need more character/romance development! I think it's some kind of fated mates thing, but I need some more than that. Why do either of them like each other?
- Ewan and Gold. Maybe I just don't know them enough, but they were both kind of flat and uninteresting. -
My ONLY complaint about this book is the descriptions—the same damn descriptions of Cerberus and Eamon, and Bel. Like okay. I get it “death-black eyes” and “big meaty head”. It helped paint the picture the first few times. By the end of the book they were just annoying.
ALSO—no spoilers but I knew that creepy bastard was the killer. (IYKYK)
Some of the character names were a LITTLE cringy (Foley Locks) but others were clever (Portia Cochons).
Over all, the plot was great, and for an Amazon book, there were only a few glaring grammar and spelling mistakes which was a surprise.
I actually recommend this book to friends. -
Are these books amazing? No. Are they a great escape when you just need something quick to read? Absolutely.
It’s kind of fun with the fairy tales but is a murder mystery so it is violent at times. This one was a bit more “realistic” than the first one as in that it didn’t have as much magic.
Romance is obviously a huge part of this book but sometimes I cannot get over the dialogue that Eamon says. But honestly that is just my personal opinion. Some people might really love it especially if they are in a romance mood.
Doesn’t really have swearing, no sex scenes but there is some violence. If you like dark romance mystery books, you’ll probably enjoy this. -
3.5
I have to say, these books are weirdly addictive. Reading them really does feel like bingeing a crime show. Lots of creative murders, subtly inspired by fairytales, and a fantasy element that I wish would be a bit more prominent.
It’s not the most realistic of crime books, but I didn’t go into it expecting that, so I’m not bothered. As I get to know more of the setting and the characters, I’m enjoying it more. And book three is inspired by Peter Pan (aka my first book boyfriend) so you can bet I’ll be reading that too. -
If work wasn't kicking my butt lately I would have already been done with this amazing book!
I absolutely love Eamon & Bel ❤️ and the way Eamon says "hello detective" which makes me think of Lucifer lol 🤣
The twists and turns get me Everytime I know this was only book 2 and yet again I was sooo wrong on the who dun it I can't wait for book 3 and all the craziness with the main characters and Cerberus the amazing pitbull ❤️ -
I read the first book a few months ago and I liked it. But this one I loved. I loved seeing the relationship between Isobel and Eamon develop. Eamon is totally obsessed with Isobel and stops at nothing to protect her. I also loved Isobel’s dad in the few times he was there. I can’t wait for the next book
-
A fun murder mystery
This is a great short read. A fun murder mystery with a hint of romance. I enjoyed much more than the first book of series. The MC character development is an enjoy to read, to see her internal struggles and relationships build is a great way for the reader to connect to her.
