The Lilly Pilly Ghost mysteries just keep getting better. I have loved reading this series. It has kept me engaged all throughout.
Abbie L Martin has created amazing characters and put them in great setting. There is as much interest in some of the minor characters as there is in Jones and her ghostly sister, Autumn.
The premise of a ghost helping her sister solve crimes, murder, chiefly among them, works quite well. The plot has a homespun feel good sense to it, throughout.
Lilly Pilly Creek is a place most of us would love to live and with the Eldershaw sisters taking care of business, you would feel very secure.
I would recommend this series to anyone who lies a good country cozy that has plenty of intrigue and lots of feel good vibes. -
Jones owns and runs the Memory Bank along with her sister Autumn, who just happens to be a ghost. After thirty years, the Lilly Pilly Creek Christmas Lights Competition is making a comeback and will be held at the Memory Bank. The whole town is buzzing with excitement. The festive mood takes a dark turn when the gardener, who’s been doing landscaping at the Memory Bank, is found dead. Jones and Autumn have worked together before to solve mysteries and they’re determined to find the killer again. They have help from friends Wren, Atlas, and Hugo. In between their murder investigation they have another dilemma to solve. They discover journals left by their grandmother that hints to a family mystery involving the Lights Competition. They have their plates full and hope to solve both mysteries before Christmas.
For those new to the series the author provides enough background for you to understand the characters and their backstories. Jones is a bookworm with an impressive collection of quoted tee shirts and an addiction to coffee. Autumn is a ghost with impeccable fashion sense and an eye for detail. Together they make for a perfect sleuthing pair as Jones talks to people gathering information and Autumn gets into places unseen to find clues. This was a mystery inside a mystery. The dead gardener made a tough case for the sisters as he was not well liked and there were plenty of suspects with motives. The second mystery pertaining to the sisters’ family was a fun addition combing two mysterious into one. The setting of Christmas in Australia with the newly brought back Lights Competition was festive and cozy. With lots of different possibilities and avenues of inquiry the author kept me guessing on how it would end. Some nicely planted red herrings gave me pause into the identity of the killer and the secondary mystery. Not fast paced but full of interesting surprises this cozy mystery was another fun installment to the series. Some intriguing changes are happening with the characters in Lilly Pilly Creek that should make for more interesting books in the future. -
(rounded down from 3.25)
This is a bit of a letdown after the second book, which I enjoyed a lot. I was expecting to get some answers and closure about the ghost situation and the future but aside from the Hugo coupling (which we knew was coming anyway), not much is resolved for the longer term for this duo of sisters. The mystery was also a bit weaker than the previous one so I ended up rating this lower than the previous instalment. -
A lot more happening in this one compared to the previous one, a bit of a higher tempo with lots of different storylines at once! I really thought Plum would be able to see Autumn! Oh well only the next book will tell 😊
