The strongest of Champions, a firefighter with a hero complex named Luke Williams, never expected to be betrayed at the last moment and sacrificed to die in the impossible hidden stage of the Tutorial. But how could he just give up? After an unknown period of struggle, he completed the incompletable. Luke returned to Earth, hoping to be in time to become a Savior he was always meant to be. But things weren't quite as he had expected... "Why the Hell am I naked in the middle of a bustling street and my memory is a freaking mess? How come all passersby worship a Hollywood actor? And why, for Christ's sake, there is a terrorist cult founded in my name?" Five hundred years passed since the Apocalypse, and Luke was Too Late for the Party.

I think this is the first book I've read by this author.
The premise is strong. Luke Williams is with a group of other high-powered people and the system offers them a choice. Sacrifice one person and they all advance or go back to Earth and do it again. The MC (Luke) wants to go back to Earth.
Luke wakes up naked on an Earth he doesn't recognize. He's arrested almost immediately and given some choices. I'll stop the recap there. The book starts out well. Everything makes sense for the most part, and Luke isn't a bad character even though things always seem to work out well for him. It's when we get to the fifty percent mark that the book goes off the rails.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll stick to generalities. The story is all over the place. The boss fight doesn't make any sense at all, and all the changes of locale are mystifying. I like books with a little bit of crazy, but this goes beyond that point.
The editing is not good. The stats are fine although Luke's progression (and other characters as well) isn't easily explained by what they've done. Most stories follow the paradigm of put in the work and you'll get rewarded with levels, skills, upgrades, etc. Luke gets levels and upgrades, but I couldn't really point to what he'd done to earn it.
Anyway. I'm giving this 4/5* because I liked the first half. It made sense to me (mostly) despite the fractured story and editing. -
unfocused
4 stars because Amazon.
Very bleak and nihilistic. The firefighter portion at the beginning was farcical. Narrative leans hard on the MC not having knowledge, but then he understands things without basis. It’s not real clear what direction things are progressing.

Fun, and…
It needs some editing. Not tons, but enough to get rid of the interruptions in flow. Other than that, it was a unique take on an system apocalypse. It’s a rough universe, and that comes through. A fun read, take it fora spin! -
Great book, meh ending
I really liked this book. The characters, the action, and the humor are all spot on. The only problem is that the ending is just there. If anything, it's abrupt.
Recommended, but with a major caveat.
