Enzo the puppy's action-packed adventure begins when he makes the journey from the farm to the city (bark twice for faster!), discovers just how big the world is, and finds the family that was meant to be his.
Life on the farm is pretty quiet—except when he races the cars that come down the barn road. Because Enzo is fast. He knows he's different from other dogs. But people never understand Enzo when he barks, and it drives him crazy! Then one day Enzo meets a little girl named Zoë and her father, Denny, and everything changes. R. W. Alley's fantastic illustrations bring the beloved Enzo to life as he learns to adapt to life in his new home and discovers just what it means to become a family.
Enzo Races in the Rain Reviews

I loved “Enzo Races in the Rain.” The illustrations are fun and the story is fleshed out enough that it will make a good story time choice or bedtime story for older kids. The illustrations will keep all but the youngest involved. It’s also nice to read about Enzo without sobbing at the end!

A cute addition to the Art of Racing in the Rain family of books from Garth Stein, Enzo Races in the Rain! tells the story of Enzo's coming into Denny's life, but told for a much younger audience, this time as a picture book. The Art of the Racing in the Rain is one of my favorite books, and with this picture book, Stein introduces Enzo to an entirely new audience, yet he stills keeps Enzo's basic character and sense of self intact. Here, Enzo discovers his love of speed (a theme that continues throughout the original book), and learns just how big the world can be, and how important it is to find and keep your family.
The art in the book is adorable, and while the story is short (as are any picture book), it moves fast and really shows how big and scary a change in your life can be (such as Enzo going from the country to the city), but that if you've got your family with you, things will generally work out in the end.
There are going to be following volumes in the picture book series (one for Christmas this year, and another for Halloween next year), and I'd like to think that possibly Stein will continue Enzo's story for years to come thru these editions for younger kids.
Highly recommended for anybody with children, anybody that loves dogs, and fans of The Art of Racing in the Rain. -
I love Enzo! The author has done a great job of capturing the essence of this dog. He's got a strong voice, and is just so much fun! The pictures are absolutely perfect, and there's just enough adventure to give us a thrill without scaring the little ones too terribly much. I want to read more Enzo books! This one is a new favorite. :)

Obviously not a masterpiece like the Art of Racing in the Rain, but quite good, and I really like the drawings.

I got my hands on an advanced galley of Enzo: Racing in the Rain and noticed the illustrator is the same [Alley] as the newly released Paddington picture books and The Paddington Treasury which we're really enjoying and I was intrigued.
The story is cute about finding a true home and anyone with pets with personality will enjoy it. It is all told from the point of view of Enzo the dog and his attempt to communicate with the humans and environment around him.
I think my galley is incomplete in process as there is no coloration to the pages, but even left as pencil drawings it is great to look at and tells the story in images.
Thanks to HC
Update, now that I've gotten my hands on a final copy, I echo my opinion of five stars. The illustrations are indeed full color and so much fun. Written by Garth Stein, with Zoe B. Alley and R.W. Alley, illustrated by R.W. Alley. -
The Art of Racing in the Rain is my favourite contemporary book, and the most heartbreaking thing I've ever experienced. Here is a less painful part of Enzo's life done in the form of a children's storybook, with a super adorable cover to display on a shelf. I am not too old for this.
I can see kids reading this as children then just being completely crushed when they read the grown-up version. -
The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of my favorite books, so I knew I had to check out this related children's book. The illustrations are wonderful and the story of how Enzo came to be a family with Zoe and Danny is so sweet.
-
The kid liked it, I was not impressed. These people should not have adopted a dog.
-
A child-ized version of "The Art of Racing in the Rain." It tells the story of a puppy born on a farm that is chosen by Zoe and her race car driving dad. This puppy will not stop running everywhere so they name him after race car driver Enzo Ferrari. When they get the puppy home he promptly escapes from the back yard to chase cars. Enzo eventually finds his way home.
The adapted story seemed overly wordy and not strong on story. Not my favorite picture-book version of an adult book. Leaves much to be desired. -
Book 67 of 2022
Super cute picture book for little readers in the spirit of The Art of Racing in the Rain. I saw this one FOREVER ago at a Target and sent a snap to my friend who has a little Enzo. Then inherited the novel from a different friend right before COVID. Just watched the movie with my family a few weeks back, and put two and two together that they're all the same franchise, and tracked this one down through ILL. -
Bookaday #13. Was worried about this one, that it would do justice to the beloved novel The Art of Racing in the Rain. Unfortunately it is just okay.
-
Amazing illustrations! Definitely a sweet children’s book with the same characters from The Art of Racing in the Rain, though with a much more child-friendly story.
-
It stands to reason that I would love this picture book as I adored the novel it is based on. Gorgeous feel good story
-
Adorable
-
Sweet story about a dog that likes to run and the little girl who adopts him.
-
Can't go wrong with a main character names Enzo!
-
Who would not fall in love with Enzo. Enzo is a fast moving puppy, who believes he is different from all other dogs. When he is adopted by a race car driver and his daughter, and given a famous race car driver's name, he knows he is right. Enzo learns that there is a world far different and much more vast than the small farm he grew up on and is ready to explore. When his explorations lead to trouble though, Enzo uses what he knows about Enzo Ferrari - that he would never give up, and finds his way home.
-
3.25 Stars I liked the pictures in the book but not having read the novel I think I am missing something. They liked the dog because he was a runner. They name him after Enzo Ferrarri because he runs fast...and they wanted him because he runs fast but ..they put him in a small backyard in the city
! What am I missing?? He runs away and he comes back?? Cute pictures and if you love dogs this is a winner but for me it fell short! -
Garth Stein was at the South Dakota Festival of Books in September 2015, and couldn't have been any nicer.
Sometimes it is a disappointment to meet an author whose work I have enjoyed; but Garth's presentations were excellent, and in spite of a long travel schedule, he was delightfully friendly. I am looking forward to his newsletter emails.
A heartwarming story about the character Enzo I have loved for many years. Can't wait to share it with my granddaughter. -
The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of my favorite books of all time, but the subsequent middle grade edition of the book and now this picture book spin-off just don't contain the same magic as the original. This is a nice enough story, but it's nothing I will remember the way I remember The Art of Racing in the Rain.

I noticed most reviews compared this to the adult book "The Art of Racing in the Rain". I've never read it, nor do I know what it's about, so I had no expectations with this book. I chose it because my 8-year-old son loves Enzo Ferrari's and dogs and this seemed to combine the two. Sure enough, my child loved it. The illustrations are cute.
-
This book was adorable! I personally love puppies and dogs so a book about one being adopted by a race car driver was even cuter. Out of all the books I picked for this week I liked this one the best because even though its geared towards a younger audience, I was still able to connect with it and have it hit home.
-
Adorable! If you loved Racing in the Rain, this is a fun addition in children's book form. It's delightful even if you haven't read Racing in the Rain (the adult version). Enzo is a puppy and gets a new family.
-
I wondered how Garth Stein could possibly write about Enzo for children, but he did an admirable job! I really love the illustrations and the story is well done. Enzo is one of my favorite dog characters, even in the picture book format!
-
Love this brand new book from Garth Stein! A perfect book for the entire family.
-
While this has the same characters as the Racing in the Rain book, the story focused on when Zoe and her dad adopt Enzo, but he runs off because of he loves to go faster.
