I really cant believe that such a book doesnt have a single review! I love this book! Is awsome how the author make you look throuh every character head, how you somehow can hate the bad guy in the story but a the same time you feel sorry and compasion for him, and see that even the main male character Matt is not perfect and he falls into a pit (litteraly) but then he raises. Then is the development of each character individually, how Constance a little girl with no parents can turn into a beautiful rich women and Polly an abused housekeeper into a succesful, independent girl. Really a must read book, that'll teach you to never give up and that when you fell like there's nothing left to you, hey!Theres a way. Always.

Rita Bradshaw leads a way to fully describe all the characters, making the readers get full info on each character. The revenge of the man, the love of Constance for Matt, the life of Constance and everything is perfectly written. I love the way how the story ended although not satisfied for the fact that they only got to get married at the middle age.

Anyway, it has to be listed as THE BEST BOOKS IN MY LIFETIME :)

I was genuinely surprised that I liked this book. I knew it was romance and I'm not normally one who will pick up a romance novel, but this was in a box of books we were given and I knew it was also a historical novel which is why I gave it a read.

It's safe to say that I am glad that I did.

Each time I thought the characters would get together, the author stuck to realism and had Matt remain in his marriage to Tilly and Constance remain away from the community. I felt each of the characters as I read, and while I might not have agreed with each of their actions, they were believable and I found myself wondering why I hadn't heard of this author before. Following Constance from a young teenager into a woman was charming and despite the losses she endured, she found happiness in her work position and then eventually with the man she never gave up on.

Now, I'm hesitant about trying another book of hers just in case this was a one-off, but if I find another in a charity shop, I will definitely pick it up.

This is only the second book I've read by Rita but it definitely won't be my last. This book follows the ups and downs in the life of Constance Shelton from when she is born. It starts in 1880 and goes on until she's a woman in 1913. Constance doesn't have an easy life but she's a good kind hearted person that takes everything in her stride. An enjoyable read
