In this Agatha Christie style murder/mystery, an RCMP officer, Sgt. Betty Bruce, and her pot-bellied pig, Gertrude, stumble upon the body of elderly widow, Eliza Bone, floating bottoms-up in her Oscar fish tank. The one clue they have is a set of muddy gumboot tracks left at the scene. Their problem: everyone on Seal Island wears gumboots.

As two more bizarre deaths occur on the island, Betty is left to wonder if there is a serial killer at work on her beloved Island.

In the end, only Gertrude may be left standing!

"Gumboots, Gumshoes and Murder" is the first novel in the trilogy of a continuing story - The Gumboot & Gumshoe Series. "The Dastardly Mr. Deeds" and "Murder Most Fowl" are the sequels. They need to be read in this order. Due to numerous requests by readers, two standalone stories will be released in 2020 - Gertrude & The Sorcerer's Gold and Chasing Santa

Gumboots, Gumshoes \u0026 Murder (Murder She Wrote meets Fargo) (The Gumboot \u0026 Gumshoe Series) Reviews

I found this book to be quite fantastic! It’s a funny, cozy mystery set on an island where basically everyone knows one another. Everyone also knows Gertrude the pig and Peaches the cow. They were by far the most entertaining characters! The book moved at a swift pace and the characters were interesting. There were a lot of them though and at one point I did find myself having to think back to who was who. Other than that the book was a comical and quirky mystery that I really enjoyed. I definitely want to continue the series. I hope Gertrude and Peaches continue to make appearances in the books.
The narrator really suited the story well. She brought the characters to life and added comedy to certain areas that may have seemed dull otherwise.

I would like to thank the author/narrator/publisher for generously providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this mystery. This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened to but as I already have the next book it won't be my last. Although I thought it was going to be more humours and I did find it very slow I did like it. There was to many characters introduced to us at the beginning and I did struggle keeping them straight to start with but as the numbers quickly dropped it wasn't for long. There wasn't much investigation going on and it was more just the discovering of the next body, so I was surprised when the book ended and the murder was reviled, I didn't see that coming. I liked the characters who were varied and unusual, especially the four legged kind and the mischief they got into. I hope the next book has a lot more of that going on because Gertrude stole the show for me. The small town setting comes across nicely and the author used her words to paint a picture and feeling that you can believe. The mystery was interesting the way nobody was sure there was a murder or not and I loved the fact they looked like accidents. The story is told be multiple characters and this works well, as there is a lot going on in the story. Off to see what happens next.
Betty is looking for the quite life after a bad break up and thought the most drama she would have to investigate once returning home to the sleep Seal island, is the chaos caused by her pot-bellied pig Gertrude and her cow friend Peaches. That is until she discovers her friend dead partly submerged in her fish tank. Did her friend did have an accident? Everybody thinks so and so would Betty if it wasn't for the fact there was muddy foot prints on her neat freak friends floor. Did the killer leave behind a clue and if so who is it pointing at? Living on an island where gumboots is the norm instead of the strange she is not short of suspects that also includes her father and boyfriend. Then another body is found. Again asking the question was it an accident or murder? This time a connection is made, they were both writers and When a third body is discovered Betty has to ask could they be a serial killer killing of writers? And if so can she stop them before anybody else is killed?
I liked the narrator. She had a pleasant voice that she used well to give voice to each character.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Life on a small island is probably more gossipy than a small town. Sgt. Betty Bruce and her father Archie share their home with Gertrude, a vigorously fat pot-bellied pig. Gertrude can rid the landscape of almost anything with the help of her friend Peaches, a jersey cow, owned by Andy, a writer of "bodice-ripping romance novels". The pair are known throughout the island and usually Archie is the only one Gertrude minds. Archie and his poker buddies meet once a week with the urn of Archie's wife in the center of the table to prevent cheating. Betty meets new friends through her neighbor Andy and joins the local book club. The Book Club is a lethal membership as the bodies line up. An elderly lady upside down in her Oscar fish tank; a hippy lady making herbal magic, lands in the arm of a concrete angel. A finally the handsome writer becomes a victim too. Each were founding members of the club and not always best of friends. And a missing pair of gumboots with a slice up the center of the right boot that visits each site.

    Wonderful Romp

Wonderful characters (the humans ones as well.) So delicious I read it in just an afternoon. I predict quite a series here. People are having deadly accidents around Seal Island, and the population isn't that big. The only possible connection is that they are all mystery writers.
Even the local RMP is part of story, with her potbelly pig,
and the pigs buddy, a cow messing up crime scenes. Lots of fun can't wait to start the next one. They're kind of are like eating nuts, one leads to another, and another. Yumm

This book reminds me so much of the song “Harper Valley PTA.””This is just a Peyton Place, and you’re all Harper Valley hypocrites.” It was getting exhausting trying to keep up with Tiffany. She did get around! And so did every red-bloodied male on the island, and not just with Tiffany. It was getting where you couldn’t keep up without a score card.
Since the first book ended with a cliffhanger, I’ll have to start the second book to see what ultimately happens, if it ever does.

    Crazy good mystery

What a crazy time! Funny, sad, goofy. A small island in Canada with a small but unusual group of permanent inhabitants which swells by a factor of five in summer ... and the questionable accidental death of a friend. Murder? Or accident? RCMP Betty Bruce has a lot to figure out.

I found the timing of the “investigation” odd. Must be part of the sleepy island community mindset! To suspect murder not accident & just decide it can wait several months til after tourist season?! I find it hard to judge the first book of a series, I need to get used to it. Altho with the cliffhanger ending, it’s more a serial than a series.

This was an okay story. It seemed to pick up then drag for a bit.The same with narration by Carrie Burgess.I think there were too many characters to keep track of.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

    Gumboots, Gumshoes, and Murder.

I enjoy stories with mystery, good characters, some believable comedy, and animals. Got hit with all of the aforementioned!! Loved Gertrude and her friend, Peaches.

    Different. Keeps you guessing!

Wow. I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Different from the normal mysteries I read. And strangely, I have a huge desire to run off to a Canadian island!
