The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! Reviews

I am feeling a lot better this lovely evening thanks to all of you who showed me nothing but love whenever i was going threw that tough illness by talking to me and encourageing me to get better... Barabra Saffer, Teresa, Leila Wilson, Charlotte, Julie Grippo, Ashley Devault, Tadiana *Night Owl*, Stacy, and Sophie... I am truly grateful for all of you amazing women and owe you all a lot!
One thing i learned in this story is DON'T LET THE PIGEON HAVE A PUPPY!!! I love Mo Willems and right underneath Karma Wilson he is one of my top favorite childrens authors. So our adorable pigeon wants to persuade us to get him a fluffy and loveable puppy... He promises us that he will water him once a month and given him plenty of sunshine... So i will leave it up to you..... Ya you! Would you give the pigeon a puppy? I am going to let you make tat decision because i don't think i am capable of decideing after all the laughing i have been doing i'm delirious... Like all the other pigeon books this one is fun and very, very cute! This is the kind of story that children would love to read for hours and laugh all the way threw. The story in all gets a five star rateing and Mo Willems gets a hug for being a brilliant writer.
Like my last review on Pigeon needs a bath i have to say the pictures were not any better. There was just a pigeon and a dog and that was all the creativity we got so the pictures get half a star for fantastic attempt. Pigeon wants a puppy is a reccomended book to everyone who needs to smile and or laugh.... I cannot wait to read more of the Pigeon books by Mo Willems.
My Rateing
5.5/5 -
The Pigeon is back with another self-centred rant, sure to please the young reader. Pigeon is set on getting a puppy all his own. He’ll water it and make sure it stays in the sun to grow. As the book progresses and the reader is not convinced, Pigeon begins a rant that only grows. When something is waiting just off the page, Pigeon quickly changes his tune, unsure what puppy ownership truly entails. Neo laughed about this one, seeing Pigeon really get into a tangle. He’s never had a pet, but knows very well that it is no easy feat, unlike Pigeon.

Another awesome adventure with the whiny and clueless but still lovable pigeon.
Pigeon wants a puppy, but he hasn't realised what kind of care and how much care the puppy will need.
Oh don't worry. I'll take care of it.
I promise I'll water it once per month.
A very good book if you want to discuss with your children the difficulties of having a pet and how much responsible they must be in order to keep their pet happy AND ALIVE.
We have just got this from the library and most probably we will read it every night this week. Unfortunately we will run out of "pigeon books" very soon :( -
Wow! Pigeon is SO funny. Those expressions... even though he could seem a bit whiney and irksome, he is somehow remarkably endearing. Haha! I'm going to look for more of his adventures.
-
Pretty cute. Pigeon wants a puppy until puppy has big teeth, is loud and scary. Perhaps a different pet would do??

I read this book 10 times today:))))) I guess I do reread after all:))))))))
The things you do for your children:))))))) -
After reading Mo Willems’ classic picture book, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus,” I wanted to try out the other books in the “Pigeon” series and I finally stumbled upon “The Pigeon wants a Puppy!” “The Pigeon wants a Puppy” is a great follow up to “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” and anyone who is a huge fan of Mo Willems’ “Pigeon” series will definitely enjoy this book!
Basically, this story is about how the Pigeon wants to have a puppy and constantly keeps telling the readers about how it will try to take care of the puppy and love it. However, what will the Pigeon think when its wish actually comes true?
“I want a puppy!”
Those were the exact words spoken by everyone’s favorite blue pigeon! Mo Willems has done a brilliant job with this book as the story is extremely simplistic (it is basically just about a pigeon telling the audience that it wants a puppy). I always loved the way that Mo Willems made this story extremely funny and cute at the same time as the Pigeon constantly tells the audience that it wants a puppy and I loved it when the letters on the pages are highlighted in red whenever the Pigeon gets overexcited or angry as it really adds to the Pigeon’s emotions about the situation. Mo Willems’ illustrations are as always simplistic with a touch of your usual humor as the pigeon has big round eyes and is blue and the illustrations look like it was hand drawn by a child as the characters look extremely simple. I also loved the image of the “puppy” at the end of the book! I will not tell you what the puppy looks like, but it was certainly surprising to look at such a puppy!
Overall, “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!” is a fantastic book for children who also went through the same situation about asking their parents for a puppy or something they really want and I think that many children will read this book for many years! I guess if there was a problem with this book, is that the Pigeon might seem a bit demanding in wanting a puppy and parents might want to alert their kids about not being too demanding about asking them want they want, but this book is still loads of fun for little kids ages four and up!

Pigeon wants a puppy.
Pigeon wants to drive a bus.
Pigeon wants to eat a whole hot dog.
Pigeon wants to stay up late.
Well, Pigeon wants a lot of stuff now, doesn't he? Pigeon has a large sense of entitlement now, doesn't he? Well, we want Pigeon to be happy now, don't we? We can't deny him anything now, can we? Would that break his little bird-heart to be told every now and then that he should have to work in order to get good things?
Wow. Pigeon is one self-entitled bird. I'm not certain if books like these are the right thing to be giving children. Actually, I'm fairly certain that they aren't. Pigeon realizes the gravity of his mistake only after guilt tripping the reader into getting him a puppy and then immediately latches on to the next "fad."
It's things like this and Elmo that are turning our anklebiters into annoying needy creatures.
Man. -
I dunno. Nothing wrong with it, and of course if you're a fan of Mo Willems you must borrow it from your library... but just not one of his best, imo. I guess because the basic theme has been done *so* *often*....
-
I would use this book to introduce the idea of caring for a pet. The class will talk about the responsibilities and then I would introduce my classroom to their very own pet.

Oh no! The comical googlie-eyed Pigeon is off on yet another tangent. This time he wants a puppy! “Oh please, please, please? I’ll totally take care of it, I promise” Hmm, haven’t we all heard that from an eager child, (maybe some adults too)???
But he’s totally underestimated the true needs of a puppy and also how LARGE a puppy is, in relation to his “pigeon size.” Yikes!
Off he goes discarding that idea and without doing his due diligence (which is something Pigeon does NOT ever do - he’s more of the “off the cuff,” impulsive sort of bird). Pigeon now decides he wants a walrus. A walrus?? 😳
And if not a walrus, then what?? Oh my.
This googlie-eyed Pigeon; he keeps us laughing and wondering whatever is going to come next?
Bought this and some other Pigeon storybooks in the collection for the grandkids for Christmas. Our favorite thus far, is “The Pigeon Needs A Bath.” More antics of Pigeon coming up in future reviews. -
This book is completely terrible. The pigeon wants a puppy for no reason at all and he acts like he would take care of it but we all know that he would eat it immediately after getting it. The pigeon does not even look like a pigeon it looks more like a blue goose and I cannot believe how the people in this book didn't just leave that pigeon and never speak to it again because of how annoying it is. This book gives no character development throughout the book, the writing is completely below average for a book of this caliber, and all of the hype around this was for nothing at all. Mo Willems let us down on this one and could not even live up to the standards of such a terrible book like if you give a mouse a cookie. I guess I'm going back to the very hungry catirpillaraverse forever.

This is a very, very, very simple book; the text and illustrations are both very spare. It’s also funny and great for beginning readers and younger children. As a puppy loving person I enjoyed it even though it’s much more about the pigeon than the puppy. The story was almost too simple for me but it had an amusing enough “surprise” ending.
-
I think the pigeon is silly because it wants a puppy as a pet. I like the part when the puppy came to lick the pigeon.
-
The books of the Pigeon series set established such a high standard that this entry just seems weak and short in comparison. Not a bad book, but nowhere near as good as the modern classic: The Pigeon wants a Hot Dog.

We have loved the
Pigeon stories ever since our girls were really little.
Mo Willems is an amazing Children's author and we borrow all of his books as soon as we see a new one.
This is a funny story and quite appropriate for this age group. In fact, today our youngest pitched a fit because she saw a cute mouse in the pet store and wanted it right then and there (despite the prebrief before we ever got to the store that we were not purchasing any pets, no way, no how!)
We turned her tantrum into a learning opportunity about the greater cost in time, money and resources that goes into owning a pet, beyond just the $2 price tag for the rodent itself.
While pigeon's diatribes were funny and exaggerated, it just goes to show how little children know about pet ownership.
(But they are sooooo cute!!!!)
Jan 2012 update: We watched a narrated version of this book on YouTube. It was very cute to hear a little first grader read this aloud. Our girls loved it, but insist that they could do it even better. I may have to take them up on that boast. -
In fall 2007, Mo Willems ran a contest for children to name the newest Pigeon book. The resulting book is The Pigeon Wants a Puppy. So from hot dogs to dogs.
In this book the Pigeon teaches the important lesson of "be careful what you wish for." Usually the pigeon books focus on him not getting what he wants. Not this time. The pigeon wants a puppy and the pigeon gets a puppy.
Now just stop for a moment and think about this because the Pigeon certainly didn't. The Pigeon is well, pigeon sized. The puppy is puppy sized. See the problem? Mo Willems did and outlines the results in hilarious illustrations.
On a personal note, the Pigeon's reaction to the puppy reminds me of Harriet and Wally dog. Wally is my in-law's Bouvier de Flanders. Bouviers are honking big dogs. Harriet is two. She's roughly three feet tall. The dog is about a foot and a half taller than she is. She is as overwhelmed with him as the Pigeon is with his wish come true. -
but i think this is my all-time favorite of the pigeon books. because this was me, multiple times, as a kid. i would have done ANYTHING for a puppy, but seriously, that would have been such a disaster.
an EXCELLENT book for parents who have kids who want everything!
(and adults that are okay with laughing at their childhood selves.)
seriously. the pigeon ROCKS. -
Fantastic! More simple and direct than its predecessors, this Pigeon book is less of a game and (dare I say it?) more heartfelt, which in this case, for a change, is a VERY GOOD THING! I'm loving the puppy-wanting pigeon :)
-
Such a cute, charming book! The story and art is simple, but amusing and sweet. The Pigeon seems like an endearing character :-)
-
Cuốn này hay nhất series và khùng nhất hạng =)). Coi cười như điên :)))

I Love the pictures and it is so CUTE

Reminded me of my child

The pigeon books are good, but I didn't like this one much.
(i read this book twice) -
Continuing with his lovable Pigeon, Mo Willems creates a narrative in which the pigeon really, really wants a puppy. After all, they're just so adorable! With a minimalist and cartoonish style, Willems knows just how to exaggerate and when to pull back--his images and text are easily inferred by small minds, and they're sure to entertain! Great for the kid who wants a pet, or who just really likes animals. Perfect for grades K-2.

The Pigeon 🤝 Me
Wanting something completely out of the blue and then going “oh…maybe not….” as soon as that spurt of want wears off -
I loved the reaction. Too perfect.

This was cute. A little odd, but funny enough to make up for it.

My niece has gotten herself a whole pile of Pigeon books to read, which of course means that they end up in my lap. Although the Pigeon can be possibly one of the easiest things to draw and has been provided with an amazing array of emotions this can also be at times quite overwhelming since of the fact that Pigeon usually comes across as a bad role model so whatever his present desire is and how he achieves it mirrors so much on society.
In this particular book Pigeon wants a puppy. The sensation to me comes across that more or less it is the idea that he is in love with as well as the fact that he is awarded for his begging, whining and tempter tantrum. But what truly gets me is the fact how the story ends since there is no explanation as to what becomes of the main question throughout the story.
The other thing that I didn't like about this particular book is that although it is a Pigeon book it just doesn't read like the other books in the series. It was more of a yep, yep whatever type of read with all its problems and less of a basis for a reader to get a stand on.
Like the other books in the series there is really not much to say about the drawings. Pigeon is easy to draw and if you get the DVD with a collection of his stories the author shows you how to make Pigeon quite easily. What makes the pictures so charming to so many is the amount of emotions that he can show off throughout the pages for it can be a bit creative.
All in all I wouldn't recommend this Pigeon book but it will be the decision of parents and other adults whether this book is brought home to be shared or not. -
Pigeon wants a puppy. Really, pigeon wants a puppy and promises to take good care of it. Pigeon is a sassy bird who knows what he wants and will do his best to convince you of the same. The vocabulary is simple and would be easy for any beginning reader to attempt. The illustrations are also simple, but in an almost retro eye-catching way. Pre K and K.
From NYT:
"Willems proves once more that crayoned ornithology and impassioned monologues to the reader…can roost indefinitely in literature's rafters. In The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! the reader is encouraged to argue with the Pigeon, who tries everything from syrupy charm to hissy fits in hopes of persuading us to buy him the pet of his dreams."
From Kirkus:
"The charming, exasperating pigeon returns, and this time he REALLY knows what he wants-or at least he thinks he does. As in his previous outings, he addresses the reader-"I'm fine. Thanks for asking"-and communicates a wide range of emotions through minimal words and a few deft pen strokes that brilliantly bring to life his one-of-a-kind personality.
Be careful what you wish for might well be the moral of this tale, since the reality of a puppy turns out to be hilariously larger and more frightening than the pigeon's or readers' expectations. Even though the pigeon may get more than he bargained for, his many fans with find they get exactly what they've come to expect: lots of giggles."
