Was the sixth of the author's eleven published novels and he likes to think of them as thrillers set in the background of the wild west which is a genre he has always enjoyed.
Introduction
Nineteen-year-old Sam Bryson faces a conflict that will test his courage, character and faith. Sam had been raised by his grandparents since he was three years old after both his parents had died from a fever. He had been given his first pistol on his thirteenth birthday and ordered by his grandpa to practise every day, except Sunday.
Sam's Grandpa, Albert Bryson’s dilemma is that his beloved wife had brought Sam up to reject violence and he is now vulnerable in a cruel and violent land. He orders Sam and his cousin, Jack, to hunt down Sharkey Kelsall who is wanted for murdering a Bryson ranch hand and whoever captures or kills Kelsall will inherit the ranch.
Sam Bryson has no reason to fear any man or any desire to kill, but he will soon discover that his life is threatened and he must protect himself.

Unusual

Not your usual western. Many things happen to one young man in a short time while he is on the trail of a killer. Some of the things are just plain bizarre. There are a number of plot twists concerning actual guilty parties. I am not explaining this well, but do not want to give away the surprises of which there are several. As for the writing, it is not equal to old standbys such as Max Brand but it is alright. I will probably try another of Williams' books. -
A young man sets out to avenge a murder and gets embroiled in all sorts of nasty adventures.
I thought this was a step above the average Western in terms of plot (which was full of twists and turns) and the writing style.
If you enjoy Westerns this is definitely worth a look.
