Shatter (Seaside, #3) Reviews

  • Tiffany Readz

I have read this trilogy in just as many days and will say Shatter is the best book of the three. My only gripe would be that I felt this book could have been amped up sexually with the characters being older now. This review will spoil books one and two.

Calm, in control Alec is a mess. His past has again come back to haunt him and this time it will involve the love of his life Nat. While Demetri is also in love and settled down, Alec is hiding a huge secret that will ruin everybody.

I think Rachel did a great job at peeling away the layers of the secret until you figured it out and went "No Way!". Just when you think you know what it is, it is something totally different. Alec is fighting to keep his sanity, his girlfriend and his brother safe from the secret and it is killing him inside. As the secret starts to come together, he falls apart.

It is weird to see Alec as the screw up and not Demetri in this book, a nice change actually. I like that again, all of the characters are present, this is Alec's story, but Demetri and Alyssa are involved also. Besides the secret, there is another twist in this book that made it exciting and me wanting to see how it was all going to come together.

This was a great read and there is just something about these characters I couldn't get enough of.

  • Crystal

Another wonderful book by a great author. I knew she had to tease us with another book after this one. She said it would be the last but thank god she decided to write another one. I just want to know how she comes up with the songs in her books? Maybe she should be a song writer. I know that she has a busy schedule and she has a lot to do.

I feel like I really got to know Alec more in this book. I was wanting everything to work out for him and his brother. I know they have had a hard life. I love reading books where family stick together no matter what they have done to each other. I knew that Nat had a secret and I just didn't want to get my hopes up about it. I won't give anything away. I would love to scream it from the rooftops but I won't.

I will now be going crazy until I get to read another book by Rachel. I felt really privileged to get an ARC copy of this book before it came out.

The only thing I will say is that you really need to read this book. It had me laughing and crying.

  • Tammy

WOW!! I laughed, I cried, I got angry with this book. I wanted strangle Alec & felt bad for him at the same time. This book had a LOT of ups & downs. More secrets & BIG explosions. You got so wrapped up in it that you had to turn the page to see what happened next. In this book everybody's life takes a big like changing hit. Besides the last chapter my favorite part was the concert. I never laughed & cried yso much. Defiantly need a tissue or two. In a good way. I loved this book and can't wait to see what in store for Jaymenson in FALL. Excellent job Rachel!!

  • Jill S (Love Affair With Fiction)

Shatter is the third book in Rachel Van Dyken's Seaside Novel's series. The story is told from Alec and Demetri's perspectives. We join Alec, Nat, Demetri, Alyssa, Jaymeson and Angelica as they are filming their reality show in Seaside, Oregon. (And let me just say, Hello and welcome to Jaymeson! It was great meeting you! Can't wait to get to know you better in the next book in this series, Fall!) Shatter revolves around the repercussions from a decision that Alec has made in the past and how he chooses to handle it now. His decisions will effect everyone he loves.

As always, Rachel Van Dyken’s style of writing is flawless. She captivates you from the very start of the book and has you wishing the story will never end. Even though the storyline of this book is often heavy and emotional Rachel is amazing about interspersing humor throughout the book. There are some fabulous one-liners in this book that just had me cracking up!

I highly recommend Shatter. Hang tight and Rachel Van Dyken will take you on a fantastic, gritty, intense, emotional journey. Her characters are flawed but they love deeply. I love to see where their motives come from and why they have chosen to do certain things. It seems to always redeem them in the end.

I received an ARC of Shatter from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

  • Crystal (Books Are Sanity!!!)

Rachel Van Dyken has done it again! Shatter is book three in the Seaside series and this book was DRAMA! I felt like things couldn't get worse and then something else would happen! I loved how this book switched POV from Alec to Demetri and there was absolutely no confusion about it. Seeing what each brother thought was a nice bonus! This book is a nail-biting, screaming, kicking, gasping for air, "did that really happen?" roller coaster ride! Shatter packs a punch in more ways than one! Prepare yourself by starting this book in the morning, not at night, because you won't be able to put it down! I am anxiously (as per the norm with a Rachel Van Dyken book) waiting for book four! I am excited to learn more about Jaymeson!

P.S. Rachel, are you also song writer? Somehow, we need to get someone to compose the music for your lyrics :)

Rating: Cussing/drugs/alcohol/sexual references. Not for 17 and under.

Alec Daniels appears to have it all. He has fame & money due to his position as the other half of the successful rock band AD2. He has also managed to capture the heart of his soul mate Natalie. Things couldn't be more perfect right? Wrong!

After making one bad choice, Alec finds himself balanced on the edge of a sword, where one wrong move could shatter the life he's so carefully built for himself.

Will Alec man up and accept the consequences of his actions, or will he fall back into his old lifestyle of depression, drugs and denial?

MY RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Shatter since I finished its predecessor Pull back in March, and I was definitely NOT disappointed! Shatter brings back the characters we know and love, from both Pull and Tear (the original Seaside novel), but with new twists and a surprise revelation (or two) that I for one did not see coming!

This novel is told from the POV of the men that make up AD2 (Alec and Demetri), and while some may think having a story that moves from POV to POV may become too confusing, Ms.Van Dyken makes sure that you always know whose thoughts you are reading. I find it interesting (and refreshing) to hear more than one side of a story, and Shatter more than delivers.

As typical with Ms. Van Dyken's writing, I was drawn in quite literally from the Prologue. She has a captivating way of writing that draws you into the story and leaves you unable to put it down until the very last sentence. Her characters are well developed, albeit flawed (which in my opinion makes them more relate-able to the reader). In fact, while many times I found myself sympathizing with Alex's plight, I also found myself torn between wanting to smack him upside the head, and just pull Nat aside and tell her myself.

Shatter deals with a lot of heavy material, but Ms.Van Dyken does not allow it to become a dark or depressing ride, adding just a touch of humor in the right areas to make the reader laugh, and the tension ease.

Of course, I loved the ending! The "concert" the boys give is sure to make the reader crack a smile (and maybe be a little envious their S/O has never done this for them - even in private). I also felt satisfied (to a point) with the ending. What I mean is that while the ending left me feeling as though the loose ends had been tied up, and the questions answered, I was (again) not ready to leave Seaside, Oregon or the people there.

Already, I am eagerly anticipating the next installment of this fantastic series, tentatively titled "Fall".

DISCLAIMER: I received an advanced copy of Shatter in exchange for my honest review. This has not reflected on my review in any way.

  • Marci

I have to say I didnt care for this book as much as the first two in the series. I liked it, dont get me wrong, I just found myself skimming at times, especially the first 1/3 of the book. There was just so much teasing about what Alec did, with him berating himself that I wanted to know what IT was so I could see if Alec was justified in his berating and how it all unraveled or was resolved.

I loved how Demetri still brought a levity to everything, his character has become my favorite. Alec tried to take on too much responsibility, as usual, even if the stuff going on was a big deal. Glad to see how things resolved at the end and we saw more of the Alec I came to enjoy in Torn.

Nat and Alyssa werent in this as much as I thought they would be, Alyssa being gone the most.

I am still not sure about Jaymeson, and whether I like him or not. He does have some of the same humor as Demetri, but he isnt fully developed yet, so a very 2-dimensional character thus far. Regardless, the next book IS about Jaymeson and I know I will be buying it! I am positive and confident Ms Van Dyken will create a character I enjoy.

I think this lands at a 3.5-stars, just not quite 4-stars for me. It was an entertaining read and a lot happens!

  • Sarah

Being a late thirty-something mom of two I have avoided the entire New Adult genre since it just seemed a bit off reading about romance between, okay I’ll just say it, characters that could be my children. Ms. Van Dyken however is an extremely talented writer. Her ability to bring the story and characters to life has definitely converted me over to this side. I am now a huge fan! Not only of Ms. Van Dyken but the New Adult genre as well.

With that said, I adored Shatter. It took me on an emotional whirlwind. I laughed, cried and had it not been on my tablet, I would have tossed it across the room at a few points. Alec!! I am going to be on pins and needles for the next few months impatiently waiting for Jaymeson’s story. I’ll have to console myself with reading all of Ms. Van Dyken’s backlist.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

  • Abby

One word. DRAMA. this book had sooo much drama.... it was exciting!!
When there was the whole drama thing, another drama happened... than another, like you could never have to much or too little drama in this book. I LOVED IT!

    NEGATIVES;
    1. i hated that Alec felt guilty for the majority of the book, and to me, what he did wasnt even that bad. Like if i were Nat i honestley would not have cared. It annoyed me that he was being a pussy and not saying the truth.

    POSITIVES;
    1. I think it was really cool how the book was majority based as a reality tv show, and that the evil ruben was evil and loved it and all that. it made you hate him, and i dont know but i love hating at least 1 person in a book. i hated angelica, until the very very very end!

    2. I think it was so cool how in book 1 it was only Nats perspective, book 2, Alyssa and demetire's, book 3 Alec AND demetries! YES EVERYONE IT IS ALSO DEMETIRE!! NOT JUST ALEC.

i kind of was thinking that the next book would be about jaymeson.. im not sure if i like that or hate that, because i really love alec and demetrie and nat and alyssa.. and now.. i dont know. i like jaymeson so i hope it will be good!:)

amazing book, just be careful about the whole drama!!!!! :D xx

This is my review from the ARC of Shatter by Rachel Van Dyken.

I absolutely love this series. Life is hard and sometimes it's even harder for those who are famous.

I love how the book gives us the POV from both brothers. Although this book mainly deals with Alec who has spent his time in Seaside making sure his brother is recovering from the tragedy in their lives and hasn't dealt with his emotional baggage.

We have the return of Nat and Alyssa and they continue to show love and support for the brothers.

We also meet Jaymeson who is British and who doesn't love a Brit. They are so funny and just tells it like it is.

Oh the twists and turns this book takes it will rip at your heart and you just love all the characters.

I just can't bring myself to add spoilers because this is a great book.

  • K.A. Graham

  • J Kiwibooknerd

Holy Moses, it was like watching a freaking train wreck....you knew it was coming and yet you just cant stop watching....

I literally had several SOL (Screaming Out Loud) moments at my poor kindle... I was smiling, screaming, frazzled, hysterical and that was just like half way through the book... I love this series and this author....

Cannot wait till the next book!!! Roll on....

  • Erin

Yep! Amazing novel again! I could not put this one down, read it first thing this morning! what a mind trip though . . man oh man does this unfold into some twisted stories.

Cant wait to read about Jaymeson and his relationships.

    Hurry up book 4!

Another AMAZING edition to the Seaside Series Rachel Van Dyken!!!

    Shattered, I'm shattered without you.

    This book was absolutely fan-freaking-tastic!!!

All prior characters are brought back into the mix of Shatter, but this time they are living their lives through a reality TV show...fun times :)

Demetri and Alyssa are still living....well I can't spoil it for you, but I will say I am extremely happy for them.

Alec and Nat have a bit more going on in this book and many times I gasped in shock and sent a message to the wonderful author.

This book is DRAMA filled to the core and a lot of details about AD2's past is brought to light...I LOVED IT!!!!

Shatter is the third book in The Seaside series by Rachel Van Dyken and I have had the great pleasure of reading all three of them. To say I enjoyed this book is putting it very mildly, I LOVED this book. Shatter is full of drama that kept me on the edge of my seat, turning pages, and wondering what in the world could possibly happen next! There is one major drama or surprise after another. I could not put this book down, I kept trying to do other things that needed to be done but I kept quickly returning to reading.

I have to say Rachel Van Dyken is a very talented author that has created characters that are not only very dynamic and thrilling, but humorous and emotional as well. I love Rachel's style of writing, she has a way of writing a story that pulls me in from the beginning and hangs on all the way until the end, then leaves me anxious for the next book.

Alec finds himself in some very hot water that he is unsure how to get out of. There are so many things going on that I wanted to scream at Alec to just tell the truth and let his girl and his family help him get through the mess. I don't want to give too much away so I'll let you read it for yourself and find out what all the drama is about. If you have read Tear and Pull then you will definitely want to read Shatter, there are some major surprises that are revealed.

I was very excited to see a preview to another Seaside Series book at the end of Shatter. I can not wait to read it! I am sure Ms. Van Dyken has created yet another great story that will keep me entertained. I know I have a few more of her books in my to be read pile and I can not wait to get to them!

If you are hesitant to try a book in the New Adult genre, try it, I think you will enjoy it. I know I sure did.

I was very luck to receive a copy of this book to read in exchange for sharing my thoughts with you. I also received Shatter as a gift. If you are looking for a good book to give as a gift may I suggest this one?

  • Joanna Peterson

    O.M.G.

I was one of the lucky few to receive an advanced reader copy of Shatter to read and review. These books are what I imagine crack is like. I am so addicted to this series. Seriously, it's not healthy.

I devoured the first half in a few hours before I had to go to work. The whole time at work I obsessed over what the big secret was. When I finally was able to finish reading it the next day, I couldn't put it down. With each chapter, my theories would change and my husband would find me yelling at my Nook.

Now, I LOVED Alec in Tear, but I came so close to hating him at the start of this book. He is one of those stupid, stubborn guys that just wants to deal with everything on their own without asking for help. Seriously, if he were a real person I would have smacked him hard upside his head.

I enjoyed seeing part of the story through Demetri's point of view, too. And I was glad to see he was still keeping is crap together.

This book also gives two minor characters from before bigger parts. Jaymeson and Angelica bring humor to the story. Their interaction with each other is hilarious. But the story also alludes to things from their past as well. I know Jaymeson is getting his own book, but I would LOVE to see Angelica have her own story as well (even if I did love to hate her).

This book was a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to smack almost everyone in the story. I really loved the end. And not just like "Yeah, the end was great." No. The end was PERFECT.

NOTE: There is some language and mild sexual content, so read with caution if that sort of thing bugs you.

  • Candiz

Im in awe right now, this book was brilliant! Rachel topped herself again! I've loved tear and pull but i LOVVEEEEE shatter! Everything gels so well and im not left wondering because all my questions have been answered from the previous books, rachel hasn't missed a thing!

All those twists and turns made my head spin because normally in other books i see them coming but not in shatter, there were so many things that i got caught up in and then BAM another bomb is dropped and im left with my mouth wide open mouthing WHAT THE FUCK!

Demetri really stepped it up and i was very proud how much he matured, he was still the funny sarcastic guy but when he needed to be there for alec, it just made me so happy. He made me say AWWWW a million times! Alyssa is so good for him, i just love her. They need babies and possibly a pet bird haha

Omg alec, i felt like i wanted to chop his balls off but luckily he saw the light and that didnt need to happen! Im just so happy for the way it ended and the concert was GENIUS! I laughed so hard! That was my favourite part of the book for sure!

Im just so excited for jaymesons book, i would love for him to find a girl that can put him in his place, maybe someone thats similiar to him. Its gonna be awesome to see just how hard he really is gonna fall, i hope the alec and demetri make it in the book aswell!

This book really did have everything, it had some real serious parts in it and i love the shit demetri has to say, always makes me laugh! If i could give it more than 5 stars i would because shatter is that fucking good!

  • Melissa

I have one question - what are you trying to do to is readers? Seriously, this was a great third installment in the Seaside series. Alec and Nat have been together for over a year and a half but now it seems like everything is falling apart. They seem so perfect together but Alec's past is starting to catch up with him. While filming a reality tv show - Alec, Demetri, Jameson, Nat, Alyssa and Angelica - are all loving together in a house in Seaside, Oregon. Being followed around by cameras is taking its toll on everyone. Alec is hiding things from everyone and trying to stay in control of everything.

Rachel, you really made me think about whether or not Alec was my favorite Daniels brother. There were times that I thought tousled there is no way that I could have ever liked this guy. There were soapy secrets revealed that I just couldn't put the book down until I was done. Honestly, I was so shocked that I think I might have said something I shouldn't have. Of course, my 5 year old daughter told me that was a bad word but I just couldn't help it. You have really out done yourself with this book and I am so curious as to where you're going with Jameson's story. I can't wait to find out what happens with him and definitely can't wait to reads more about Alec, Demetri, Nat and Alyssa. I think I might even like to read more about Angelica, even though she was kind of a *****. She was still a pretty cool character to meet. Again, a great book and I can't wait for more of this series and your other books. ;)

See full four-part review for Tear, Pull, Shatter and Forever here
    http://www.romanceaddictbookblog.com/...

“Alec, whatever’s going on… you know I’ll always be by your side, right?”
    “Can you promise me that?”
“Alec, you’re acting like the sky’s falling or something. I’m. Right. Here.”
    “I know.”
“But damn if the guy I love isn’t a lifetime away from me. You ask me to promise you I’ll never leave, but it feels a lot like you keep trying to say goodbye.”

Shatter is told in Alec and Demetri’s POVs. The tension in this book is unreal. I was sweating and freaking out while reading, just waiting for all the shit to hit the fan. Demetri, Alyssa, Alec, Nat, British actor Jamie Jaymeson, and total bitch Angelica Greene are doing a reality show in Seaside. That can’t end well… We met Angelica in both the previous books, and all she does is cause trouble. This book is no exception. Just when we thought we knew all the Daniels’ boys dirty little secrets, we get totally blindsided by even more of them. So. Much. Drama. The couple most affected was unfortunately, Alec and Nat. We get to see how truly messed up Alec can be. He made me want to punch him in the face sometimes, but I still loved him. He just had some growing up to do. And lots of groveling. Alec has to actually fight for Nat this time. At the end of Tear, Dem kinda just let them be together. After he gets over himself, Alec has to pull all the stops to show Nat what she really means to him.

  • Resch Reads

I am having a serious love-hate relationship with this story. I loved it because the book was focused on Alec who is by far my favorite of the Seaside men and I hated it because he was struggling and I didn't want to see a character I so fiercely love, struggle. So for the first half of the book I struggled to keep my deep seeded hatred under control. The gut feelings I had about Angelica being a truly horrid human being...yep just verified. She is vile and I honestly, firmly believe she doesn't ever deserve a happily-ever-after. Unless with Ruben because he is equally as awful.

Now Alec and Nat had my feels all over the place. I was concerned, I was cheering them on, I was drawing the conclusions that everything was going to hell. Seriously, at one point in the story I was like, "When is enough, enough?". It was like an endless case of one bad thing after another with endless cases of people getting punched in the face. Haven't these men learned that that is not the way adults work out their issues?! But I truly loved having all these men together and they gelled so flawlessly.

Alec really grew throughout the story and I loved watching him battle...and defeat his demons. The secondary characters also make the story...they were the ones that flawless balanced out Alec's brooding with humor. I also have a true confession to make, my real life relationship is a carbon copy of Demetri and Alyssa's relationship in this book...*dies of embarrassment*. What can I say, I am a sucker for a rock-star romance.

  • Brittney

Rachel Van Dyken is one of those authors that took me by surprise. I'm always entertained by her books and Shattered was no exception.

I adored the first two books of the Seaside series, and I must say this is my favourite so far. Alec and Demetri are delicious characters from their looks, to their inner demons that attract us girls like a moth to a flame, to their fantastic banter. In Shatter, the demons are bigger, the banter is in full force, and the story delves a bit deeper into the swoon worthy rockstar brothers.

I really loved that Demetri really does seem to have settled into himself and has his shit sorted. It made me very happy to see that for him. Yes, he obviously gets swept up in the drama of everyone else, but throughout the book, he's pretty solid. While Alec on the other hand is a whole other story. Alec is a hot mess, and while I really felt for him, I liked seeing him hit with so much. His tight control on his life seemed too good to be true, and seeing him get so shaken up and forced to face his demons was great to read.

Another winner from RVD and I can't wait for Jaymeson's story in the fourth Seaside Novel, Fall.

  • Heather

An assistant to the author was kind enough to [very highly] recommend Shatter (and the first two books in the series Tear & Pull). She provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest (and unbiased) review.

I've been Team Alec since the beginning (but, admittedly, there have been times when I thought I might could be Team Demetri). Shatter tracks the struggles of Alec, whom we've until now thought was as strong as the Hulk. We find out that we all have our demons, they just sometimes sneak up on us and we have trouble finding ourselves.

Alec loves Natalee more than anything in the world, but he sometimes has a terrible way of showing it. He has to find out how to love himself, to really be able to treat her like she deserves. Both Demetri and Alyssa try to help him along the way, but Alec finds that only he can fix himself. I admit, there were times throughout the book that I yelled at Alec, but in the end he comes around full circle and it better than before.

There are many struggles throughout the book, tying each person into the story. It felt like a real life reality show! I can't wait to find out more about Jaymeson!

  • Amanda

After eagerly awaiting this book, I was graciously given an arc a week before the release date.

Summary of how I felt about it? It was definitely my favorite book of the Seaside series, if not my favorite book of all from Rachel.

I've been Team Alec ever since the first time I picked up a Seaside novel and this book did not disappoint. I loved how we got to read more about Alec and his demons - demons that he wasn't wanting to face but had to before he lost everything that mattered to him. We got to see his good and his bad sides, everything that made up Alec Daniels.

It was nice being able to see all of the characters together. Although I can honestly say that I wanted to strangle Angelica halfway through the book. And whereas she redeemed herself a bit in the end, she falls under my least favorite character. Demetri gained some points with me as well - it was nice seeing him grow up a bit and help out Alec this time.

A definite must read. Rachel has another bestseller on her hands!

  • Megan

So I have read many of Rachel's historical romances and then got introduced to Elite, and then the Seaside Novels. I began Tear on Friday knowing Shattered was coming so I could get my fill. I lived and breathed these books till I finished Shattere Sunday afternoon. Shattered is an emotional roller coaster because you are so connected and care about these characters, I laughed, I cried, I yelled and cursed throughout this book as I was on the journey with them. Rachel did an amazing job challenging the characters and putting them through... H#ll to get them to face reality and make the journey to love themselves! I loved the split POV between Alec & Demetri, perfectly balancing the story to really connect you with their internal struggles and relationships. I don't know how to accurately put into words how amazing this book is. The characters you love you will hate a bit, and the ones you start off disliking you may grow to pity, care for, and root for! Can't wait for the Fall!

I really was going to give this book 1 star but decided to go with 2 because I do like the characters and enjoyed the first 2 in the series.
THE GOOD: RVD has a wicked sense of humor and I always enjoy the dialogue. I laugh and grin constantly, especially when the POV is from Demetri.
THE BAD: Pretty much the entire plot. The reality tv show was over the top. The dragging on of Alex's turmoil over what he did while dropping a breadcrumb here and there for the reader.
THE UGLY: It's a semi spoiler that I won't write but considering the ages of these KIDS I just couldn't get all happy with what I felt was too much drama added onto more drama topped with a drama cherry. Most of the plot was just toooo much.
THE SICKNESS: I like all of the characters so darned much that I will more than likely pick up the next story about Jameyson and just pray it's a better plot.

Really liked this...I haven't read the first two in this series, don't know if I'm super missing out...I didn't feel lost or anything. I like that the perspectives change and we get to see how different characters are feeling. There's a lot going on in this book, it's like one thing after another after another, wow! I liked Alec, though I may have wanted to smack him a time or two. The beginning was so, well, I didn't really have any intention of starting it today, sometimes I'll just pick a book and read like the first three pages and then go back to whatever else I was reading before (I'm not sure why I do that) anyways, once I started I couldn't stop and it started in such a way that I had like a very uneasy feeling but was so drawn in that I loved it. Lots of lies and crazies, but totally worth the read!
