Spurgeon Gems Reviews
-
This was so good and refreshing to read!! Quotes by Spurgeon were organized by topic (e.g. The Holy Spirit, God's Word, Preaching). Overall I agreed with them. Maybe one or two I didn't wholly agree with. But they were good. "Gems" is a good title for this book. It was quick to read and so worth it!

Title says it all.
Spurgeon’s insights into historical Christian faith are timeless and precious truths that transcend this world and all its brokenness to our innermost selves, where the Spirit of God dwells in all true believers. He articulates with eloquence and intelligence, but it is Spurgeon’s heart, a heart after God’s own, that will compel you to keep reading through these gems. Enjoy one quote a day or indulge in many. This book will inspire you to grow in affection for the Lord through earnest prayer & devotion to reading scripture. May God bless your efforts to know Him and to know Him well! -
Oh how I love Spurgeon, his turn of the century writing style thrills the heart to read. The gems he imparts to the reader cause one to stop, and reflect on the splendors of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This is one of those books to read again, and again, for the truths about God never grow old.

Gold from Spurgeon
Humbling, encouraging, uplifting... I am so thankful for Spurgeon. His colourful illustrations and interesting phrases is extremely captivating—one struggles to stop reading... -
This collection of Spurgeon quotes was so good I practically highlighted almost every line! Indeed, he is rightfully called the "Prince of Preachers".

A Useful Compilation of C.H. Spurgeon
The Prince of Preachers as he is called was one of the best preachers God has raised up. Doctrinally sound, evangelistically passionate, and oratorily gifted. This little collection of some quotes from him is a nice resource. Of course reading his sermons outright is better, these do provide some helpful insight on a topic or theme. -
a cream only book. short book chock full of spurgeon's greatest quotes. really good stuff. plain and truthful - no beating around the bush. last chapter was convicting. enjoyable book. short read - less than an hour. recommended.

Timeless Truths of the Gospel
It's hard to imagine that these pearls of spiritual wisdom were written over a century ago. So much wisdom to ponder and act on. I will return to this book to meditate on these words. -
Loved how it categorizes everything into specific doctrines. Spurgeon is such an amazing open mind into what the gospel really is. Nothing added. Nothing taken away.

Great!
-
Charles H. Spurgeon has been called "The Prince of Preachers." The Prince indeed. In these short, pithy essays, the genius of Spurgeon shines through. The great Baptist preacher held forth weekly at The Tabernacle in London and was used by the Spirit to preach the Word of God to thousands. In "Words of Wisdom For Daily Living" one will find 31 essays on topics such as death, the evils of sloth, the deceitfulness of riches, the danger of self righteousness, and many other practical topics.
This is not a difficult read, nor is it long. But the reward is in the soaring rhetoric of Spurgeon that is brought to bear on the human heart through the Word of God. There is, indeed, much wisdom in these words, and though the essays are old, they are not anachronistic. Spurgeon's Words have ongoing power and relevance because he never lost sight of his Master and his Master's words.
This would be an excellent supplement to one's daly devotions or would be well used for family devotions. Happy reading! -
Marvelous collection of compelling quotes!
Before getting this free eBook, I had never read anything by Charles Spurgeon. I had heard he was a great preacher, though.
I used this book as a daily devotional for a month or so. Since these excerpts from Spurgeon's sermons are arranged topically, it worked well for me to read a section or art of one a day, read some profound statements aloud to my spouse, and share especially insightful quotes on social media. I highlighted so many passages!
Although this preacher lived and ministered almost 100 years ago, his words are relevant for today. If you're looking for some solid meat from Scripture to chew on, you'll find it in bite sized pieces in this book! -
About midway is the part of the collection that has the more intriguing verses and charged language. Though, not completely. This is a collection of various snippets from Spurgeon's sermons.
It did in fact give me, a person ignorant to the type of preacher he was and the intensity of his sermons, a better portrait of Spurgeon and the theme of his preaching.
He was reserved, though not quite reserved. He was only slightly controversial. This is probably how he survived in popularity back then. Also if I'm not mistaken, this is as far back as I've heard "What Would Jesus Do?" expressed.
It was informational for me, inspiring, but not particularly illuminating. It has its place. 4 Stars. -
I knew nothing about Spurgeon before starting this book and I was so surprised by how true and incisive so many of the quotations were considering he lived in a very different time. But I suppose the Bible doesn't change so a good sermon would be just as fitting today as it would a hundred years ago.
I'll definitely be reading more by and about Spurgeon in the future. His words are thought-provoking and often startlingly on the nose regarding human nature and the excuses we make for our behavior. -
I found this and thought I would give it a read because Surgeon was a powerful preacher.
It's kind of cool how it's laid out according to topics, but the quotes didn't always align as well as I would have thought. That's really the main reason to read a book like this.
Overall, there were some noteworthy tidbits, but I've feel like I've read much better quotes from him. You're better off just following an IG account with his quotes. -
I enjoyed it, not the first book of his I have read. It's short but packed with wisdom.
By age 21 Charles Spurgeon was the most popular preacher in London. For 40ish years he delivered the message of the gospel of Christ. Spurgeon is eminently quotable, and this volume contains a lot of such material, mostly from his sermons in the 1890s. All in all it's just Spurgeon being Spurgeon. -
Great!
Encouraging and bible based wisdom. Would encourage other Christians to hear his teachings and thoughts! God bless you guys... m -
Excellent book.
Excellent book. I enjoyed his spiritual insight and it is a good source of gems to share with other believers. -
Uplifting. Inspiring. A rich well for spiritual blessings
-
Convicting, encouraging, and delightful little book that serves as a perfect read for each morning! Highly recommend.
-
Very inspirational. Highly recommended. Super short yet profound.

There is no finer expositor of scripture than Spurgeon. His life and his work are worthy of our study and understanding. Readers of his Morning and Evening devotions will find this book a great addition to their library.

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist pastor, often called the "Prince of Preachers." This brief book offers a variety of quotations gleaned from his printed sermons. The book is divided into sections such as "salvation," "suffering," "the Bible," etc. The style of the book makes it easy to read in snatches and still find encouragement.
Some of my favorite quotes:
"Christ and His gospel will always be spoken against. If you know a gospel which is approved by the age and patronized by the learned, that gospel is a lie!"
"Faith is weakness clinging to strength."
"There is a gladness among devils when we cease to pray!" -
(I read the Pilgrim Publications 1979 edition). Thirty-one short, pithy, and practical chapters on various issues of the Christian life such as What Is Pride, Sleep: A Gift Of God, Have Courage, and A Talk About Death. Very good.

Richness is found in these little snippets.
Much wisdom is contained in very few words. Thought-provoking. Uplifting. Joyous reading. Warnings of hell and a peek of the glories of heaven.
