Within these pages, you will discover a world where mermaids meet up with Jack the Ripper and the undead fight in the Civil War. You'll explore history from horrific medieval diseases to present day disasters. This is the history of the world like you’ve never seen it before.

Horrors of History is a collection of tales brought to you by both established and up-and-coming writers alike. I'm not going to give this book a star rating because a) I have a story in it and b) I know the publisher. I only know two of the other writers in this collection of 14 stories, though, so I figured I'd still leave a few comments.

For the most part, I really enjoyed this collection. I wasn't as into the American Civil War stories, or the German/Russian WWII story because war stories in general don't interest me as much, but the "Sanctioned by War" WWII story by Robert J. Mendenhall was actually really engaging, I think in part because it was set in Australia and the Philippines and I've been curious to see more about the war in the Pacific.

Many of the stories blew me away. My favourites were probably "Public Enemies" by L.D. Rose, "The Ideal Baby" by Elizabeth Hawksworth, and "The End... Or Is It?" by Lindy Spencer. "Croatoan" by Kevin Saito read like a creepy folklore/urban legend, which I really liked, too. I also liked that there was a story set in Kenya, "By the Rivers of Babylon," which was particularly disturbing and engaging.

I truly enjoyed Horrors of History. Fourteen authors with distinct voices write about events in world history and what supernatural occurrences may have help shaped those events.

The stories take us to the trenches of WWII, where gangsters and zombies collide in the roaring 20's and aboard the Mary Celeste, an abandoned cargo ship. I don't give away spoilers in my reviews but these stories are well worth your time to read.

While my favorites were Public Enemy, Croatoan and 28 Days of Horror, all the stories kept me guessing until the end. Some are a bit gruesome, which I don't mind, some are not, but they were all suspenseful and well written by talented authors.

If you are a history buff, like horror and want a good read, pick up a copy of Horrors of History. You won't be disappointed.

The best story in the collection was L. D. Roses's 'Public Enemies'; the writing, plot, etc. far surpassed the others.
A few of the other stories were good though: 'EKMUU' and 'The End... Or Is it?' (both darkly humorous), and what was probably the most disturbing of all the reads, 'The Ideal Baby', which was based on actual history, without a non-human creature in sight. 'Sanctioned By War' was pretty good too.
The rest of the stories fell in the okay to meh range, and one wasn't scary/horror AT ALL ('Contrition'). One stood out for being in the WTF zone - 'By the Rivers of Babylon'. It didn't make any damned sense, and I'd like to know what the author was smoking or drinking when she wrote it. It was entertaining, though.
Note that the majority of the short stories in this collection featured zombies of one kind or another. Really?
    A weak 3 stars.

HEARD THIS BOOK WAS GREAT, I'LL POST COMMENTS IF I GET MY HANDS ON IT. BUT FROM THE REVIEW IT SOUNDS GREAT AND I KNOW MOST OF IT ALREADY.

    Short stories, easy read.

For the most part this was an entertaining book. There were a couple of stories I found hard to "get in to", kinda boring.
