Japanese Literature Including Selections from Genji Monogatari and Classical Poetry and Drama of Japan Reviews

I got this from Amazon for 0.99, but it was an excellent introduction to classic Japanese literature, from around 1000 years ago. It was translated and edited by Epiphanius Wilson, in 1900. His dated English usages somehow work very well with this material. And his notes are very informative. 75% of the book consists of a large excerpt from Tales of Genji, sometimes called the world’s first novel. The rest is a collection of poetry and a couple of short dramas. I liked all of it, especially Genji. Some of his behavior is beyond the pale (even by 800 AD standards) but its a great story.

The book is merely an introduction to Japanese Literature. I ought to instigate an understanding of Japanese Culture to be able to absorb all of its contents. Nonetheless, it is a gratifying beginning in a book that comprises selections from Genji Monogatari and Classical Poetry and Drama of Japan.

Apart from a few poems (which were just lovely) and the last story/ drama at the end, I did not fancy the main story at all. Genji is unnerving! However, there are beautiful poems/lyrics throughout the passages.

Another selection read to end my Japanese Challenge for a History Group here on Goodreads.
