Complications arise when Marietta’s secret love letters are accidentally found by the wrong man.

1828, the London countryside

For years, Marietta Stone has harbored a secret infatuation for the handsome Frederick Finch and has poured out her deepest feelings in a series of passionate love letters that she keeps in a locked drawer. But when Marietta’s private letters are accidentally delivered to Frederick’s house, she must retrieve them immediately before they fall into the wrong hands. If the letters were read by anyone else, the resulting scandal could jeopardize her reputation.

Gerard Hartwell has no time for infatuations, courtship, or even love. He must find a wife with a substantial inheritance if he wishes to save his late father’s bankrupt estate. When he accidentally discovers Marietta’s love letters at his cousin Frederick’s estate, he strikes a bargain with her. If she helps him court her older sister, Anne, he will return the letters and help Marietta win Frederick’s heart.

Marietta agrees, and the two quickly pretend to be courting in order to spend time with their individual love interests. Yet, what appeared to be a straightforward bargain becomes complicated when Gerard realizes that the more time he spends with Marietta, the more he wishes he could court her for real. But can he persuade Marietta to give him a chance when her heart might belong to another man?

The beginning of this book was okay, even if a little absurd. I was hoping it would get better, but alas, the longer I read the more I rolled my eyes. It was so contrived I couldn’t take it anymore.

Etta wrote a cheesy love letter to her secret crush, as a form of therapy, because she knew that nothing would come of it. The letter was never meant to be sent. Okay, I can roll with that. But instead of burning it right away she addressed it and put it in an open drawer!! In a house full of servants!! Wtf, girl? What were you thinking??

Instead of getting her crush, she ended up being clumsily blackmailed by our hero Gerard, poor girl. He promised to help her with the crush if she helped him to get her sister. What a mess!

Gerard was clueless and not in an adorable way. He made me feel mostly nothing, sometimes mild annoyance, occasionally irritation.

There was zero chemistry between them and their scheming was boring and didn’t make any sense. Meh.

Ready for a fun Regency romp involving scandal, blackmail, secrets, a fake courtship, and a letter? I enjoyed An Inconvenient Letter by Julie Wright. It’s a clever twist on the letter that should never have been mailed trope, with a childhood friends to more, slow burn romance and a bit of a Romeo & Juliet vibe. Throw in a bit of Jane Austen feels as well and it’s a sweet, sometimes madcap Regency romance that kept me turning the pages.

Marietta “Etta” Stone’s had a crush on her best friend Lucy’s brother for years. She secretly shares her feelings in letters written to Frederick which were never meant to be seen by anyone, let alone him. When her sister accidentally mails the letters, Etta scrambles for a way to retrieve them before he reads them. The only problem, a small scandal involving the two families have made them enemies. Just when Etta and her sister Anne have found a way to retrieve the letters, one of them is intercepted by Lucy’s cousin Gerard.

Gerard Hartwell is in need of funds to save his family’s estate. While visiting his mother who’s staying at his aunt’s & cousin Frederick’s home, Freddie offers to give him a much needed loan provided he find a wealthy wife who could ensure repayment. Gerald wanted to marry for love, but his circumstances require marrying for money. When he confronts Etta who appears to be stealing his cousin’s mail, she drops the letters and he retrieves one of them. Before he agrees to return the letter, Gerald comes up with a blackmail scheme hoping to solve all of their problems. Etta agrees to help him court her sister Anne while he helps her win Freddie’s heart and Gerald will keep the letter as insurance. What could go wrong?

I thoroughly enjoyed Etta and Gerard! Etta feels like she’s always in her beautiful, talented sister’s shadow. She feels unseen and unappreciated despite her unique talents and kind heart. I love the way Gerard ,though initially attracted to Anne, starts to see Etta and all her abilities. Their slow burn romance was fun to watch through all the mishaps and misadventures. There’s even a sort of villainess in the form of a determined woman vying for Gerard’s suit. I loved the twists and turns, the humor, romance, and delightful drama of it all.

Definitely recommend to clean Regency romance fans! I’m hoping we’ll get Anne’s story next. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

I love stories when a character writes a letter to another character that they don't ever intend to send, and yet through unforeseen circumstances the letter is sent and the writer is thrust into chaos and panic mode trying to retrieve the letter or fix the faux pas.

Poor Marietta (Etta) finds herself in just such a circumstance. And what ensues is an adventure full of mistakes, friendship, struggles and love. I enjoyed how the author wove these characters together in this story. I enjoyed seeing their personalities emerge, especially when in a hard situation you tend to see the true character a lot more. I enjoyed seeing the backstory and reasoning behind certain aspects of this book. And I really loved the friendships in this book. They were wonderful!

There is a sweet romance that slowly builds. I loved seeing the development of that and how it all weaved together throughout the main story. The ending of the book was very satisfying and I'm hopeful that there might be a second book that features Etta's sister Anne. I'd love to see how her story ends.

    Content: Clean.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

    Happy Reading!!!

Fake relationships, scandal, blackmail, secret crushes, and accidental mail deliveries make up this charming historical romance.

Marietta has a long-standing crush on her best friend’s brother. But the friends are no longer allowed to see one another, due to scandal and appearances. Writing letters to this secret crush soothes Etta’s obsessions, but when they’re accidentally mailed, she will do whatever it takes to make sure they don’t fall into her crush’s hands.

Although slightly frustrating at times, this story kept me turning the pages. Gerard’s blackmail and deals take an interesting turn and I was anxious and eager for things to unfold the way I wanted them to. Twisty and turny (not in a suspenseful way) was the theme of this Regency tale, but I adored the way each tendril uncurled and came together.

These characters are spunky and full of ingenuity, and my romp through the pages was delightful.

    Content: mild romance

I truly enjoyed this book and all it had to offer. It was a shorter, easy read that held my attention throughout. The blooming love story between Etta and Gerard was so cute and portrayed perfectly. The author did a fabulous job including the cutest sibling relationship and the realities of society mothers who choose favorites among their children. The whole novel was adorable and wholesome, touching on the importance of understanding one’s own value despite the opinions of others. I really loved this message, as well as several others that were subtly hidden throughout the novel.

I will say that this novel did not possess the most perfect writing style, but the point came across just fine. The characters do talk out loud to themselves a lot, which I found a bit odd, but I was able to get used to it. I highly recommend having knowledge of 1800s society and vocabulary before reading this book or you may find yourself confused and having to do some Googling .

Marietta is in love. It's unrequited and such a pain. She poured her heart into letters that have gone missing and now has to make a deal with Gerard Hartwell to get them back in her possession.
This is like grown up regency PS I Still Love You except they don't quite make it to her intended audience. Those inconvenient letters making a mess of the heroine's world... What's a girl to do but matchmake her way through the ordeal. I’ve really enjoyed Julie’s books in the past but I just think this was… fine? It’s not super memorable and I don’t know that I’d be able to pick it out of a lineup if someone asked me to. It wanted for more drama and higher stakes.

Let me preface this by saying this story wasn’t bad or terrible or anything of the sort. It merely wasn’t my cup of tea, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. 🙂

    What will you find?
    •scandal
    •drama
    •fake dating (regency style)
    •a love triangle
•a family feud worthy of the Capulets & Montagues
    •childhood friends

While I never felt truly invested in the story or in the characters, there were some comedic & some sweet moments. And if you like Marianne Dashwood type female main characters, you’ll enjoy Etta’s story.

    * " The longer we hold our grievances, the harder they become to release.”
    * " How was it so many people managed to botch up the whole business of being family so thoroughly? "

I loved the author’s previous book and was excited to pick this one up but this was lacking in a lot of facets for me. This felt like a book rather than a story. I wasn’t wrapped up in any of it and had a low emotional connection to anything happening.

Not to mention the rampant miscommunication, not only between the romantic pairing but also side characters too. It would have been way too easy to have a conversation about what was happening rather than literally running away or letting someone explain themselves before judgement.

And I was missing the romantic connection. Mentions of past childhood aspects were brought up, but that didn’t add to the present storyline. It felt like a false experience was being created that I never got around to being invested in.

It’s a short, quick read. And there are some good scenes and moments throughout. I didn’t hate any of the characters (besides the bickering mothers because that was ridiculous). Everyone kind of did their thing and this won’t be one I remember all that well.

    Overall audience notes:
    - Historical/Regency Romance
    - Language: none
    - Romance: kiss
    - Violence: low

A naive young woman, besotted and writing secret love letters, finds those letters in the wrong hands. The beginning of this wholesome love story promised to be filled with emotion and a touch of humor.

Childhood friends Marietta and Gerard have a long history. Etta's crush on her friend Lucy's brother, Frederick, leads her to write secret love letters that never reach their intended recipient. Gerard stumbles upon the mistakenly sent letters, giving him leverage over Etta. He uses this to manipulate her into aiding him in a scheme to court her sister Anne. Once successful, he agrees to return the letters. The situation resembles a Comedy of Errors.

Meanwhile, facing financial trouble due to his late father's past mistakes, Gerard aims to save the family estate by marrying for money. This Proper Romance unfolds, leading to blackmail, a fake courtship, jealousy, and a minor love triangle. The slow-burn romance holds surprises as a cast of colorful characters adds mirth and humor. The feuding families reconcile, and true love blossoms, all stemming from one inconvenient letter.

Julie Wright's latest novel promises an enjoyable read worth adding to your book collection.

This book is written by a new to me author. I didn't know what to expect and found a sweet gem of a story. This is a Regency Era romance about a young woman who wrote a letter that wasn't intended to be mailed. Does the mayhem that ensue lead to love? Is it love for the intended in the letter or for someone else entirely? I recommend this book for anyone who loves a sweet closed door romance with an Austenesque feel to it.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher, and this is my honest opinion.

  • the girl who played with books

Marietta Stone, for family just Etta, has been in love with Frederick Finch since very young age. She decides to put all of her emotions on paper to cope better with love that will never happen. Her letter is sent by accident. (Un)luckily Frederick is not the one who receives it. It is his cousin Gerard.

Gerard had known Etta since they were children and he always saw her as a friend. In the current situation, he proposes her a deal - she will help him to romance her sister and he will help her to attract the attention of his cousin and return her letter. Under rather unusual circumstances, Etta agrees to this. And that is where the real fun starts.

I absolutely loved this novel. It reminded me of Jane Austen books that I adore. Julie Wright has created two very likable main characters whose story was a delight to follow. In this book you will find a bit of confusion, annoying mothers, unexpected hobbies, some fun adventures and sweet moments. There are no unneeded descriptions and unnecessary events. The plot is easy to follow; the narrating style is simple and captivating.

This book offered me more than I expected. I laughed a lot, I sympathized with the characters and I was really satisfied with the way the plot was unfolding. I especially liked the dynamics of the main characters and the way they support each other and create a safe environment to be who they really are in front of each other.

I am genuinely very glad that I was among the first readers of this delightful story. Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for sending me this book for review consideration.

An Inconvenient Letter is a Proper Regency romance meaning it is going to be clean for intimacy and language. Marietta “Etta” Stone has been infatuated with her handsome neighbor Frederick. She writes a few love letters to him sharing her feelings but without ever having the intention of mailing them. But of course they do get sent. With the help of her sister she tries to recover them but instead finds they have fallen into the hands of Gerard Hartwell who is Frederick’s cousin. This turns into a fake courting romance with Gerard interested in Etta’s older sister Anne.

Etta is young and still hasn’t had her first season. Gerald is a few years older and his desperation to save his family’s estate has him making some questionable choices. I like that there are some twists and turns on the way to finding love and a HEA. I always enjoy the author's writing and this book is no exception. It was a nice escape on a dreary afternoon. For historical romance readers or any age. Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing for the ARC via NetGalley and I am leaving an honest review.

An Inconvenient Letter was a sweet and pleasing Regency romance. The storyline was predictable, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of seeing the romance develop between the hero and heroine. The side characters, too, were well presented and memorable. It was a light, easy read that I finished over two sittings, and I felt satisfied with the conclusion. All up, this is a book I would recommend to fans of Regency romance at the sweet-and-innocent end of the scale. I am giving it 4.5 stars.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Letters written by Etta Stone to her neighbor Frederick Finch are really a young girl's infatuation, which is why they will never be mailed. But a series of unfortunate events put one of the letters in the hands of Frederick's cousin, Gerald Hartwell. Gerald sees an opportunity to win a lady and her dowry by blackmailing Etta. He needs Etta's help to encourage her sister Anne's reception to courting. Family feuding and matchmaking are interfering and making it difficult for Gerald to get Etta's sister alone. Only it turns out it's not really Etta's sister he wants, but Etta herself. Of course nothing is easy at the beginning of a romance. I enjoy reading a romance where the overlooked, unmarried lady is really the one who stands out. A clean romance from a new author for my TBR list.

When one fiasco turns into another....

Etta had a childhood love for her neighbour and as a way of getting over her feelings, she wrote him a few letters, but didn't sent them of course. However, they're accidentally sent, attempts made to retrieve them foiled by a visiting cousin, who apparently feels a little desperate for a deal to save his estate. He'll return the letter if she'll help him court her sister.

The plot twists and turns after this. It was truly entertaining. I really felt for both the characters and their plights. Etta's never felt valued for who she is, Gerard is drowning in problems he can't seem to solve and can't see past.

You'll enjoy this if you like historical fiction.

I really loved the whole concept of this story! I loved Etta and how her character grew into being more of a take charge type. I felt for bad for her not seeing that she has value too, but she ends up seeing that. I also liked Gerard’s character and how he sees that marrying for love is important. I liked their childhood memories with each other. I did find the story a bit chaotic at times and the romance was lacking a bit for me. And I didn’t like the mistrust towards the end but the ending was good. Overall a good story.

I went into this book slightly wary because I am typically not a fan of love triangles. They can be written in a way that isn't terrible but I am always a tad nervous. This book was a pleasant surprise! There is a bit of a "love triangle" but not really how it is typically portrayed. It is obvious to the reader who the best hero will be in the end. This story moves a tad slow in the middle but there are some really fun scenes and quirky character attributes that make the rest of the book most enjoyable. The love letter debacle is fun and made for a unique plot line through the entire book. I enjoyed the setting, characters (except for a select few which you will understand!), and the ending wrapped up nicely. This was an enjoyable light read with a bit of sweet romance.

    Four Stars.

If you've ever loved love letters in your books, then this one is for you because it has such a fun twist. What happens when the WRONG GUY finds your secret, never-should-have-been-sent, love letters to another man?

    A touch of blackmail?
    A bit of fake {regency style} dating?
    A big of bargaining?

    Yes, yes and YES!

I really loved the elements in this story. Marietta and Gerard are such a fun duo that make discovering their story incredibly fun with each turn of the page. Both angling for things (and others), yet never seeing what is right in front of them...all while managing a family feud.

Seriously, does a historical romance get better than this?

Highly entertaining, super fun characters (some you'll love to hate on lol), and an overall fun and enjoyable read. And that ending: *swoon*.

This is a great book for anyone looking to escape in to a fun, light historical romance!

Marietta has had a secret crush for one of her neighbors-Fredrick Finch, and put all her feelings in a few letters. She never intended to mail the letters, it was just a way to get her feelings out on paper. The letters accidentally get mailed, and Marietta is on a mission to retrieve them before they get read. Her plan backfires when a cousin of Fredrick intercepts one of the letters and refuses to give it to her. He wants her to convince her sister Anne into dating him. Etta finds herself in a predicament and names Gerard as her suitor. A book about healing relationships, forgiveness and friendship.

Beautiful cover! This novel is very clean and wonderfully written.. I really enjoyed the relationship between Etta and Anne. They just adored each other and were on the same team. Gerard made some bad decisions in the beginning, but by the end I liked the way his character turned around and how he made himself vulnerable In hopes of winning the girl.

For some reason I cannot explain, I didn’t love this book. I was super excited to read this story because it has the name Julie Wright on the cover, and I love her books. But….I really struggled with the story.
While I did enjoy certain aspects and parts, as a whole I just didn’t like this book. And the most frustrating part is I can’t put my finger on what I don’t like. Many times I had to get myself to keep reading cause there were just enough moments of “I love this” to keep going. Long story short, this book just was not my cup of tea.
Since I like focusing more on the positives, here are the things I enjoyed:
    • The sisterly bond between Anne and Etta
    • Remembering childhood memories and shenanigans
    • Those funny moments that genuinely got me chuckling to myself sprinkled throughout the book
    • The (last) love letter *swoon*
    • The way Gerard and Etta support each other
Just because I didn’t enjoy this book doesn’t mean that others will think the same. Give it a try because it still has many lovable components.

    3.5 stars.

There was just a bit too much miscommunication and denial of feelings in this story for my personal taste. It took Gerard and Etta such a long time to realize that they loved each other! There were also too many side conflicts going on. A lot of the storyline was characters fighting. I did love the way the story ended but it was too little too late.

ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

  • Amanda Morrill

3.5 stars. When a love letter is accidentally sent to Etta’s crush (but not received right away) a string of lies and deception occur. Some of it works okay. The romance is a slow burn of recognizing their feelings. The ending actually worked really well for me and somewhat “saved” the story.

  • Nicole

I thoroughly enjoyed An Inconvenient Letter by Julie Wright. This was another story I read late into the night as I was totally engaged from page one. The pacing is perfect — pages flew by! I especially loved the characters in this delightful and charming story. Etta is a great heroine. She is strong, independent, and completely knows her own mind. She is also genuinely compassionate and pays attention. She sees a situation for what is truly is, and she understands why people act they way they do because of those situations. In other words, Etta is really good at seeing the heart of a matter and she cares deeply. I appreciate her use of un-sent letters for cathartic purposes. I relate to Etta because I, too, have penned many letters I didn’t send just to get my feeling about people and circumstances out. So, when her un-sent letters get sent, I really felt her pain. I can’t even imagine how I would have felt if any of my diary-like, intimate, private letters had been mailed out. I think I would have died from embarrassment. But Etta is amazing. Not even this faux pas gets her down. She makes lemonade from these unfortunate lemons. And this unlucky letter-mailing brings her back in contact with a childhood friend, Gerard Hartwell. Gerard is a good hero. He is a seriously hard worker, he has a good heart, and he wants to do right by his family, friends, employees, and tenants. But Gerard is also a bit myopic. He needs Etta to open his eyes to some of his truths. I really appreciated this aspect of the story the most — how Etta and Gerard’s relationship grows over time and allows them to become the best versions of themselves. That’s genuinely what a good romantic relationship should really be all about.

An Inconvenient Letter is a sweet Regency Romance that I genuinely enjoyed and highly recommend. If you’re a fan of well-written, engaging storytelling with a delightfully fun romance then An Inconvenient Letter is definitely the book for you!

I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I loved Etta and her sister Anne although I do wish we had seen more of their relationship. The romance was (for the most part) rather swoony. And some of the conversations and sentiments shared between Etta & Gerard were quite touching to the point I teared up a few times. Plus the setting and the language really had me wanting to reread some Austen because it was very Austen-esque.

However, the writing was a bit amateurish IMO. The two mothers who were in a fight with each other were absolutely ridiculous and painful to read about and so was Miss Bates. Also I truly don’t understand the whole Freddie situation- they kept going back and forth between him being a bad guy and wanting nothing to do with him and him being a great guy whose friendship they couldn’t bear to lose. Personally, I couldn’t stand the guy or his mother and I don’t understand why the Stone sisters and Gerard kept associating with him.
Also one final complaint, while I think Gerard turned out to be a great guy, the blackmail scheme was VERY hard to stomach. It is hard to get behind a hero who starts out with such a dubious introduction. He had just been proclaiming that he could never marry for money and then he instantly starts blackmailing Etta, a longtime friend, into helping him achieve exactly that?? Oh gosh maybe I’ve talked myself into lowering this to 3 stars.

Goodness gracious, did I love this book.
If you like Bridgerton, you need to read this one!

Etta and Gerard's story was heartwrenchingly beautiful. Oh my god, was it a slow burn that had me biting my nails just urging things to move along faster... But it was SO worth it!

Etta was in love with Freddie - Gerard's cousin - and Gerard was in a pickle and needing to marry someone with money to save his own farms so when he catches a letter Etta wrote for Freddie he makes a deal with her - he won't show the letter to anyone and will help her get his cousin to like her, and she'll help him court her sister. However, things don't go according to plan, because when do they ever?

All the suspense had me screeching. I KNEW they had to end up together from the very beginning but it took them so long to realize it!!! I felt like jumping inside the book and slapping them across the head smacking some sense into them.

Honestly though, this book was beautiful and I highly recommend it. The love shone through it and wrapped me up in a comfy warm happy bubble and I felt sad to have to let it go when I finished. I'll most likely be rereading this one at a later date. And I hope you'll have joined me on this happy train by then.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc. 🩷
