Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they’re in the business of killing all gods’ creatures for profit.
It’s also a darkly comedic fantasy series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Hobbit Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!
A new ongoing series from PETER PANZERFAUST’s KURTIS J. WIEBE and featuring a gorgeous incentive cover by SAGA’s FIONA STAPLES!
Rat Queens #1 Reviews

RAT QUEENS ROCKS!!!!!!! They are funny, tough, irreverent and kick ass. I highly recommend Rat Queens.
-
A great way to start the series! Though I don't want to set high expectations in this one, but I hope I will end up liking this one!

(Read for the August #booktubeSFF Awards Readalong)
A gleefully foul-mouthed, ultraviolent grrl-power piss-take on epic quest fantasy, in which the titular gang of snarky mercenary heroines try to figure out who's paying to have them (and other mercenary gangs) assassinated. Along the way they manage to piss off an entire orc army. Kurtis Wiebe devotes about 90% of his writing energies to attitude and about 10% to story, but he does have the sense of humor (a bit like Borderlands with South Park profanity levels) to pull it off. Roc Upchurch's art is much looser and sketchier than I usually like to see in a graphic novel, but it's a style that suits the irreverent, zero-fucks-given material and works especially well for action scenes. No depth to speak of, but has a lot of funny character moments amidst the mayhem. -

YES!
Rat Queens puts the "F" in a lot of cursing and witty wordplay----as well as fun.
Who wouldn't want to be in a town where there are amazing guilds filled with all types of characters from EVERY MAGICAL REALM in EXISTENCE. Maybe not every single one ----you never know, this could turn out to be like Fables---but the fantasy character/creature edition. Anyway, if you like to take a walk on the Lord of the Rings/Every Fantasy Guild Written Book/Most of the MMO/RPG you've EVER played----you'll mostly likely love (to put it mildly) this new series.
Guess what else is totally normal?! An all-star women cast of kick-ass heroines (with amazing fashion taste, I might add). Ethnic Characters---Say What?! Like---just the girl on the main cover---NO. Open the book! NOW. OMG---even better---GLBTQ! As a coming out story or identity crisis? NO. AS JUST A CHARACTER. I think it's to soon if that could be back story---but nevertheless----it "ain't" in the first five issues. :)
Let's review here:
1) Main & Side characters of different that are POC
2) Include some characters that are GLBTQ
3) Add some fantasy/magical elements that are from classic to pop culture
4) An all-star female cast that are amazing-party animals as well as talented fighters---or brawlers at times.
Look no further! I can't keep telling people about this comic series enough. NOW. To be fair, you may also get these questions (I work at a library, so I get them a lot) Does it have language and maybe graphic violence? Yes. Should this matter?
That is how passionately in love I am with this series.
Besides Saga----this is my current "must read series." -
Rat Queens. This is a comic that would appeal the RPG-playing crowd. Reading this reminded me of the webcomic Table Titans. What makes this turn the table on conventions, if a little bit, is that this is a questing party of four women and they swear, drink and fight as much as the other parties do. Probably a tad too much that they are exiled to a quest to restore a semblance of peace to their town.
This title has been getting a lot rave reviews on the internet, but I'll reserve my judgment until I have read more issues of Rat Queens. -
it's like d&d with your friends and without pretension. and also, lesbians, people of color, empowered women and anything else you really want, including a really engaging story.

بد نبود
ترکیب کمدی و فانتزی همیشه جواب داده -
I've heard so much about "Rat Queens" I thought I should give it a try. The result is this: confusing story with way too many characters introduced at once; the cringiest jokes I've ever read in a comic fill most pages; events follow one another at such a pace that it's impossible to appreciate them if something were to be appreciated about them. I don't necessarily dig the art too much either, but it has its merits, especially detail-wise and on the coloring front.
Not going to continue, at all. -
I've heard about Rat Queens for a while now, and some people I know said I would like it. Well, they were right. I had a lot of fun in this fantasy world where four rat queens take action to take out lowlifes, and trade quips with each other and everyone else. Really fun read. WARNING: does contain adult language!

Great artwork.

Ahh, not my cup of tea.

I swear to god, I'm not exaggerating. Rat Queens is EVERYTHING you want in a graphic novel and more. Definitely more. Just read it. Please. For the love of everything you hold dear.
The story is fast-paced, the characters are well-molded. It starts off simply enough, and you tend to expect something lukewarm but what you get is pure brilliance. The action scenes jump from the page, the dialogues are realistic and relatable. The humor is all-out but never in-your-face, and I absolutely love how badass the women are. Really, kudos to the writers for making this diverse in more ways than one.
Also, I love that they had a 'Jerry' moment. That just about killed me. -
-
Strong women in a fantasy setting with strange artifacts, pompeous bureucrats, cool attitude, fantastic humor, sneaky assassins and a cliffhanger like no other. Of course I loved it! Highly recommended.
-

What a cast of characters in this group of four that we meet! Each with very interesting back stories and full character, their rampage through adventure is really something to follow.
I think my favourite character, however, was Orc Dave, who grows bluebirds in his beard whenever he uses magic. Very cute. -
3.5- Good start and I'm very intrigued to continue... I sence great things

5/5 stars for
Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery ~
"Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all god's creatures for profit. It's also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief."
If that description doesn't do anything for you, GTFO, because this badass comic series is for true fantasy/DnD fans.
Heroines with varying strengths and flaws instead of the typical extremes of "good over-the-top-cleavage model" and "evil over-the-top-cleavage model", heroines who get their asses kicked and have to manage to heal themselves instead of shrugging off stabs and arrow wounds like so many other comics/manga, a diverse caste with diverse body sizes (including black people and an Asian chick, for real), an intriguing story full of humor, and great full-color art complete this package. I couldn't ask for more.
Some of the negative reviews I've read are from people who just didn't get the fantasy/DnD references -- such as races, classes, gods, or lame-ass guys summoning lame-ass tentacles -- so it's just a matter of knowing what genre you're getting into here.
And to all the haters of this series, I defer to Hannah ~

I liked this, it was fun. The art was well done and consistent and pretty. There were great one liners. The plot was a bit flimsy but I didn't mind that it was more character driven. I'm not sure who's my favourite, maybe Dee. She has the coolest clothes.

Yes. Yes... and another hell yes! I can't believe it's 7:09 am. I need to be sleeping but instead I'm laughing my ass off reading the exploits of the Rat Queens. Honestly Betty and her shroom party sound too fun to miss. I'm kind of she doesn't exists in the real world. Anyway. Unto the next one that comes out... TODAY!
-
I need so much more Rat Queens! This first issue was re-released as a dollar first, but I will need to get the first trade because I love it so. I started planning cosplay before I'd even finished the issue. Awesome ladies with unique appearances and skill-sets questing, quipping, and kicking bum! Love <3

I think this is a funny series with a lot of potential, but this first volume felt like a very detailed inside joke for people who enjoy D&D and RPGs. For a series that is unusual in a lot of respects -- there are four female main characters who run around killing monsters -- it still seemed like I was reading the comic version of a videogame storyline.
-
This was my first attempt with a graphic novel and I really did enjoyed it. I will be continuing with this particular series because even thought the story telling wasn't the best, the art was absolutely stunning, the character development was awesome and the characters are amazing. Each and everyone of them had a distinct voice.
-
More of a 4.5 really, but I'll bump it up because it's tough to intro four main characters in a balanced way and because the dialogue was hilarious. I cannot wait to read the further exploits of these four kickass women.
-
Not for the faint of heart. The Rat Queens use foul language, big swords, and feast on candy/magic mushrooms. First comic, they're kicked out of town for brawling.
In other words, this series has promise!
For mature audiences only, seriously. -
YES, GOOD. I NEED MOAR.
-
A lovely, self aware parody of dungeon crawl style adventures. Kick-ass characters, queer characters, funny and sweet. I really enjoyed this a lot.
-
Several looong spreads of bloody battles..fine, but would have liked more plot/character development.
-
Fun! I really liked this and am looking forward to reading more of the series. It's vulgar, violent, and more than a little bit ridiculous, but it was fun to read and very enjoyable.
