Sam is banished to Hel, the bond with her angel, Gregory, broken. Six Elven kingdoms are battling for supremacy, and she’s broken and injured in the middle of the most hostile one. Shooting the top off a royal throne, committing fraud in the completion of a contract, and threatening a high lord hasn’t endeared her to the elves, either. If she wants to free the enslaved humans they hold, she’ll need to find a way to help unite their kingdoms.

But elves aren’t the only problem facing Sam. The ancient demon, Ahriman is holding her to the terms and conditions of the breeding contract she signed – and one thousand years under his claw is looking to be the most terrifying thing in all of Hel.

Imp Forsaken (Imp, #5) Reviews

This series is so much fun!

This book kept me hooked from the beginning 'til the end, which is pretty rare. It starts as soon as the other one finished (and we all know it ended in a sort-of-a-cliffhanger) and it's way better than I expected it to be!

I mean, this chick is badass! What I like about her is that she's scared as all hell but she's still pretty awesome, even though she knows it'll all end up really bad for her. Yeah yeah, it's a book, the heroine always ends up ok, but the road from point A to point B-happy can be damn hard. And it definitely is for this chick. But she comes out swinging, as one would expect.

What I can't say I like too much are her relationships. Both with the angel and with the human. They are... I dunno, they feel like they come from a different story. Without those this would definitely be a 5-star review.

I said this about the previous book in this series, but now THIS ONE is my new favorite. Or at least a tie with book #4. In this installment we get to see Sam make the best out of becoming literal demon pond scum (long story), which is oddly a lot more entertaining than it sounds. The only downside to all this was the Gabriel chapters, he kind of sucked the fun out of things, but I'm guessing his point of view was needed for future books with more angels taking the central focus. I'm so happy that I found a PNR series that I really enjoy that has 5 more books in it (4 of which are already published!). On to the next one (soon)!

Gabriel stared. "What is wrong with you? What happened to you?"
His brother's mouth twisted into a wry half-smile. "I met an imp and everything changed."

    Banished to hell!
    Imp Forsaken
    Imp, Book 5
    By: Debra Dunbar
    Narrated by: Angela Rysk
Series: Imp Series, Book 5, Imp World, Book 6
Our gal is banished to hell and she meets her family there and gets bad news. The situation just gets worse and worse! But she always has a plan! Yep, that gets her in trouble too! Love this series for the action, suspense, supernatural creatures and characters, humor, and romance. This one had a good mystery! Can't wait for the next book!
    Narration was terrific!

    ★★★★★★, yes 6.

When I love a book series I usually devour it within a day, and if necessary, into the night and early morning. So why did it take me six days to get through this book? You'd think it couldn't hold my interest, but you'd be wrong. The truth is, I wanted to savor the moment, enjoy every page. And enjoy it I did... Thoroughly.

All is fair in love and war, as Sam and Gregory are about to learn firsthand...

The book itself is somewhat different from the first four, as it is told from dual point of views. Sam's of course, but more surprisingly, Gabriel's as well, as they both uncover disturbing truths about the angel/demon breeding program. The pacing in Gabriel's parts is definitely slower than Sam's, but no less interesting IMHO. His story is intervowen with that of other members on the ruling council. We learn of their theories regarding Sam's background, their sorrows, moral doubts after the split, and their ever present longing for lost life partners, offspring and brothers, as they try to keep Aaru together. A task that's growing increasingly difficult, since Gregory's acting uncharacteristically indifferent to the mysterious angelic deaths. In fact, the scene where Gabriel confronts Gregory with these accusations, is amongst the funniest in the first half of the book. Poor Gabriel is so endearingly clueless of life on modern Earth when he offers his assistance in killing undead/necromancers to a chips-eating Gregory, who is hanging out with Wyatt;-) (in fact, it would seem Gregory is busy sinning: Lying, shirking responsibilities and EATING junk food- Completely disregarding his vibration patterns. Sam will be proud when she learns of this, Gregory! Dare I hope Sam will be able to tempt him with more pleasures of the flesh as well?) This leaves Gabriel to investigate their deaths on his own, not easy for an angel with an aversion of all things physical, especially humans. Luckily, Gabe experiences his own cathartic, Sam-inspired moment by the end of the book. Let's just say it involves a well aimed pastry;-) Yay for chaos in an Angel of Order, very fitting. Although I don't feel as if his story has been concluded, so I wonder of we will get more from his POV in the final book.

But as always, it is Sam and her merry band of demons, from lows to siblings, who take center stage. Remember what Gregory once said to Sam? "There will be no more rocks to hide under." Well, the moment has arrived. When a banished and broken Sam finds herself in Hel, unable to assume any other form than a goo resembling pond scum, she immediately imprisoned in the most hostile and expansionist hungry of elven kingdoms, and drawn into a conflict with at least three, separate agendas where human slaves are trapped squarely in the middle. Not only must she stop the angels who are planning to breed with captive demons, she must stop their elven accomplices and the evil mastermind behind the whole thing. Someone with an even more sinister plan...

AND she must fulfill her dreaded breeding contract with the horrific Ahriman, so twisted, hateful and thoroughly evil, yet still clinging to memories of angelic wrongdoings, dreaming of revenge. Phew, their interaction scenes were bone-chillingly repulsive. But of course, Sam wouldn't be Sam without her impish attitude and un-demonlike compassion, wit and foolhardy bravery. And then there are her two foster siblings, Dar and Leethu, so characteristically demonic in their own flawed ways. Yet so likeable, especially when they're making lewd jokes at Gregory's suggestion that she should "eat him". (Oh, PLEASE let us see Leethu seduce a couple of angels, Debra. They need their feathers ruffled and vibration patterns disturbed- BADLY! ;-P )

Things go from bad to worse for poor Sam in this book. Yet, by the end you will have a huge grin on your face, at least I did. I found myself giggling madly at her "misfortune" and obvious denial;-) It felt so right, though I can't say it was entirely unexpected, given the name of the last book. I am positive her impish attitude will stir up trouble where it is much needed in the next installment. Poor guys, if they were shocked at the end of this book, I bet they will be even more so very soon. In fact, the anticipation is already killing me! Poor, poor Sam. Life certainly won't get any easier for her from now. She will certainly be juggling a lot of responsibilities, and relationships. But it's all good;-)

So, I've been told we're heading into spin-off land next. There are so many sequels I'd love to read. Dar, Leethu, the Gate Guardian, Happy, Uriel, Gabriel, they all need their own spin-offs, along with Boomer.

That will keep me occupied while I wonder who Sam's "parents" are, why they gave her the devouring gift. As well as my questions regarding the human/demon long term relationship, will her new gifts play a part in Wyatt's future. Will we ever know what became of Samael. In fact, my poor head will be in a state of chaos until I can get these answers in the last book, but that particular feeling is only fitting, I guess;-)

Okay, I struggled with this one a bit (the plotting, Gabe etc); up until the last 10%.

    Holy shizzle on a stick!

Funniest series I’ve read in a long time

This is one of my favourite of the Imp series with Sam spending quite some time in a bucket - you have to read on to find out. I love the balance of good heart and selfishness that battles inside our favourite demon and the denouement is just wonderful. Fresh and funny.

  • Amyiw

3 1/2 and I would like to bump it up but just cannot. Too much time as pond scum, a prisoner in one place, or another, then POV with Gabriel and the angels figuring it out. The very end is the only thing that saves this. I love that Sam saves herself and then really shakes up the elven political structure.

The relationships of Sam with her foster siblings, Dar and Leethu is the only real contact that we get. Wyatt is just a thought and at the wayside. Gregory is only shown in snipets through Gabriel's POV and Gabriel is both worried about him and frustrated with all the hidden agendas he doesn't understand. Not great interpersonal growth. So the best part is the growth and better understanding of Dar and Leethu. Since they also are the more 2ndary characters, I wasn't as involved as the other books of the series. Besides that, they were only in a small portion of the book.

The other thing that could have made the really good but was missing, is humor. The humor was in a few place. I think I may have chuckled 3 times. So not like the other books again. Even the last book had the snarky Sam humor. Here she sits as pond scum, then a prisoner, tries to save the world (OK only hel), imprisoned again, and finally free and trying to save the world. There are a couple of funny scenes but mainly it is pretty serious. Actually Gabriel on Earth was more fun than Sam imprisoned in Hel. So couldn't pull another star from me there.

I didn't love this book, I only kind of liked it and really liked the ending. There is a big change for Sam. The ending is what brings it to the high 3. I'm so glad she didn't have another cliffhanger like the last book. Yes, everything is changed so, "what happens now?" is on our minds, but no cliffy to our few running plots. Yea!

    ---------Update at 1/3-------------------
This is going to be the first Imp book that I don't really like, like. It may get better, but I see it coming. This beginning has been a drag so far for Sam and the switching POV to Gabriel to get the story in the Angel world. It is distracting and is in a POV of a character that a minimal 2ndary character. It is really boring. At least with Sam you are hopeful and get her snarky comments, the plot is dragging but it is not totally boring. Gabriel is a bore.

I can't even begin. I loved every part of this so much, it was such a rush...the complots, the action, the characters growth, the empathy, the courage, the sacrifices, the horror, the violence, the endurance, the love...my little imp has become so much more...I hope to be able to write more of a review of this, but I jumped right into the follower and I loved that even more, I can't seem to be willing to start anything else...

I had certain problems with this book. Unfortunately. Part of it was based on the fact that I 'knew' that certain things were just about to occur . . . but not unfold fully until the next book. That and one of the main story-lines in this book seemed . . . stupid.

At the end of the last book gawttt. Oh sorry, that was me pretending I couldn't say anything because that would be spoiler-y, for the series.

For reasons that are clear to people who have read the previous books, and not to those who haven't, Sam finds herself back in Hel with certain . . . issues. Like problems with converting from one form to another. And stuff. Puts quite a damper on her enjoyment with life. Especially the part wherein she appears unable to change her current form. That as . . . well, people kept calling her 'pond scum', and not as an insult, but as what she 'was'.

So, there Sam is. In Hel suddenly. As pond scum. Unable to move. Unable to look anywhere but up (no, the pond scum doesn't have eyeballs, Sam just has certain 'sensing' abilities). Then some elves turn up. Poke at the scum. Scum that is no where near a pond. And looks vaguely 'wrong'. So they capture it and put it into a dungeon. Assuming it's some form of demon. Get annoyed when the pond scum remains pond scum.

Eventually the Elves learn that the pond scum is in fact a demon. Specifically one that is quite . . . unpopular in that specific Elf kingdom. Stuff happens. Magic unfolds. Etc.

Not the story line, though, that I called 'stupid'. No, that's the one wherein Sam, in a prior book, just casually puts her name on a breeding proposal. Just did it. Knowing it'd cause issues. There were some vague threats but . . . stupid plot line. Well, the time of waiting is over, and now Sam will need to spend a thousand years as some assholes play-toy. By her own conscious decision. There already was a massive asshole in the series, Gregory (not his actual name, apparently), but hey, more the merrier or something. Oh - right, that demon Sam's bound herself to via breeding contract, is super high up and is a massive sadistic (literally) asshole.

Right, so, massive amounts of torture and abuse occurs in this here book. Not a fun book at all. I was going to rate it something like a solid three stars until some of the events near the end of the book convinced me to rate it somewhat higher than that.

    Rating: 3.58

Best of the series so far, and now brings the long wait until the next book. (Sooner than late summer...please? I beg of you, Debra Dunbar! I will offer you a coveted chicken wand, free of charge.)

And I thought the last book was emotional - 90% of this book gave me such a hopeless feeling. Would Sam ever be Sam again, would she ever see her angel, hell - would she come out alive? (Notice I made no mention of Wyatt. I dislike him immensely, have since the first book.)

Sam is faced with many responsibilities, all of which are highly challenging since she is still broken. She has very little (almost no) power in order to fight the battles she needs to, with the exception of one very important one that comes in handy and changes her demon-self significantly. At least she had help from her favorite demon siblings, Dar and Leethu. But she realizes that fighting as a human is quite tricky, and could very well be the end of her.

Most of the story takes place in Hel and the elf lands after being banished by Gregory in the last book. She thought it would be the best place to recoup and mend her broken demon-spirit. From page one, things don't turn out as expected. And things just get worse as soon as she has to confront Ahriman (superdouche) about their breeding contract.

What was really interesting about this book is we get a POV from someone other than Sam. The story bounces between Sam's POV and Gabriel's. Gabriel is trying to solve the mystery of the two dead angels, and what he uncovers is bigger than what he thought. All the clues lead to betrayal amongst the angels, but "high and mighty" Gabriel can't see what's in front of his face. Add to that, big bro is on a downward slope, eating chips and playing video games.

The ending definitely made up for the sinister tone for the majority of the book, especially when Sam makes her internal plea to go "home". I just hope Sam realizes that now may be a good time to let Wyatt go. Or just revert to her demonic ways and kill him, whatever works. Just be gone, useless dude.

  • Danielle (Danniegurl)

I liked this one but I didn't for the shear fact that Sam was separated from the main cast of characters we were used to. I saw the ending coming due to the synopsis of book 6.
WARNING DO NOT READ THE SYNOPSIS OF BOOK 6 UNTIL DONE WITH THIS BOOK!!!

So I was wondering how that particular thing was going to happen. Then I got disoriented with Gabriel's pov who at the time when I first saw it thought it was Gregory's but the way it was worded was confusing. Took me a few times to figure out it was Gabriel's pov, which bet was BORING!!! I didn't care about his investigation I didn't care about him. Why couldn't we have Gregory's POV or hell I'd even take Wyatt, someone important to Sam.

Sam is broken, she can't fixed herself and we pretty much pick up right where we left off. I was really worried how Sam would pull this off but she somehow did. It is a crazy and at times sad ride but I'm excited to see where this goes.

Side note I am disappointed we didn't get to see any of the reunions between Sam and her friends and the reunion between Gregory and Sam lacked a bit for me.

Sometimes..... A series leaves a person a bit speechless and after reading all of the available books in this series in two days I am in absolute awe. The world building the character development: loved it all! Perhaps my favorite thing of this series is that the heroine doesn't really start out as a heroine at all. I do not like to give much away in a series, I feel it dilutes the power of a story. So I've just got to say that it is one of those rare occasions where I'm going to read the series again. Starting tonight.

Just finished Imp Forsaken and now I wish there were more Imp books
As was so funny and Dar I just loved him so I hope to read more from
    Debra Dunbar ^.^

  • Zenda

    Angel of Chaos

I was worried that this would be my least favorite since Mal/Az/Sam/Iblis/Cockroach is separated from the group, but I think this may be my favorite yet.

  • Selene Tepesh

One of the best books in the series thus far.
    I really enjoyed this book.
So much happens. So much changes.
Sam goes through a lot in this book. Like an insane amount. Lots of torture and defeat and imprisonment.
But she also kicks major ass! And transforms and transcends.
I really missed Wyatt and Nyalla and the OG crew. They weren’t in this book. I also really missed my angel.
But we got tons of Dar ( whom I now adore) and some other cool new characters.
We also got a good amount of the angel Gabriel. It was kinda random but cool I guess.
The last 1/4 of the book was intense. I mean I was in tears with her torture and spirit rape by that piece of shit. It was horrible. But then it got really good. And the ending was amazing. And I had happy tears.
This book was intense but really good.
    Great writing also!!

  • Andi

I debated for quite some time whether I should skip this book entirely based on many of the negative reviews. But I'm glad I didn't, because this was the best in the series thus far.

Yes, chapters alternate with the point of view of a relatively new angel, Gabriel (Gregory's younger brother), as he investigates the deaths of the two angels from the prior book. His only interactions with our favorite angel, Gregory (whom we finally learn his real name), are in mere snippets. But there is a point to this, laid out in the end.

The chapters from Sam's point of view are outstanding. She spends the first two months locked in an elven dungeon, unable to do much more than simple healing. She is stripped of Gregory's bond, and can hardly even change her appearance, stuck primarily in human form. But there is also a point to her suffering, and it prefaces amazing things to come in this series.

We don't see many of the side characters in this book, except for Dar and Leethu. They proof their loyalties and worth to Sam in this installment.

I continued to find grammatical errors in this book, but not as many as in prior books in the series. Regardless, they didn't detract much from my enjoyment of this book.

If you haven't checked out this series, what are you waiting for?

  • Coyora Dokusho

Okay, I stayed up until four in the morning and fist-pumped WITH BOTH HANDS repeatedly into the air because of the EPICNESS when I finished reading. I'm gonna wait until I got more free time to read more of the author's books because I need to sleep... seriously I need to sleep... sleep!!!

I think the book ended on a good point, some of the books earlier in the series I would have been DRIVEN MAD if I had to stop at that point - this is a good place to wait for the next book with rabid anticipation.

    I lol'd.

    I squee'd - this rarely happens!!! XD

I feel satisfied and fulfilled after reading this book!!

I have to wake up in two and half hours... nuuuuuuuuuuu...... >.<

  • Jennifer

Great story! Really liked everything involving Sam...took me out of the story a bit reading chapters from Gabriel's POV but also shed some light into his character. Really liked this story in the series...gripping from beginning to end. Very happy with this read. Also loved the glimpses of Gregory without Sam... And her experiences in Hel, the elves and the high demon she was in contract with.

  • Jillian

The second half of this book was fantastic and totally 5 stars, but a couple of the chapters from Gabriel's POV in the first half of the book were a bit on the boring side and didn't really do it for me so I'm settling on 4 stars overall.
This is book 5 of the Imp series and I am really enjoying all of these books. This book was especially fun. I recommend this series for fantasy readers.

  • Emily

I love this entire series. it's my go to when I'm on an airplane and need an easy read that takes me to another world.

  • Melinda

Weird that I read this book out of series sync. But since I wasnt able to get it earlier, I have just finished book 8 and now come back to this one. This book felt a little different to the others - maybe it was reading out of order, maybe it was the dual POV, maybe it was less of Gregory and more of Gabriel, maybe it was the revolting nature of things that happened to Sam mid-book.

But as always, Sam is amazing, irreverent, independent, resourceful..and, by the end of the book, victorious, and in denial (no spoilers here). This series continues to astound me. Love the narration by Angela Rysk.

  • Tessa

:D It was worth scrounging for. After the last book with that eep ending, I was crushed. This book made it better. So much action, so much drama and a lot of political intrigues. To be honest, mostly political intrigues. After the last one, the "issue" was still unresolved for Grumpy. Add to that, our little imp was having to deal with Hel. Tons happened that would be spoilers, but in the end, I was extremely happy. This book is what I look for in paranormals. It delivered 100 percent.

  • Monica Mancini

Holy Moly!!!! I was so afraid and on edge of all the holes Sam kept digging herself in Hel and terrified we would never get to have her out of Hel while in this book and it would be left as a cliffhanger for the next - but alas!

At the very end we get to see Sam reunited with Gregory and I was practically crying with joy over it ... NOW we need another one! I can't wait to see what happens next with Sam as the Angel of Chaos! :]

  • Lollipop Kipper

Why do books have to end?? Another great book from the Imp series leaving me wanting more! Sam's character progression feels so natural, she's changed so much through the series but you don't see it as a simple 'bad turned good' process - it's more believable than that. I love these books and really hope that we get the next one sooner rather than later :)

  • Debra

I love this series and Imp Forsaken is the best book so far ! Sam/Mal/Az just gets better and better. I love that she grows and she has definitely become a force to be reckoned with in this book. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

  • Katrina Marsolais

NO NO NO NO plsssssssssssssssss it can't be over!!!!! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT NOW!!!!! plsssssssssssssssssssssss plssssssssssssss I will beg lol :(

    Skvele.

  • Patricia Huynh

That ending was soooo worth it! Otherwise, not the strongest book in the series.
