During the last 20 years, parents and teachers have passed along the secret of the Kissing Hand to children facing first days of kindergarten, first grade, and other separations. Now younger children can get in on Mama Raccoon's secret and find comfort in A Kissing Hand for Chester Raccoon, a board-book adaptation of the original picture book. Chester could feel his mother's kiss leap straight into his heart. "With a Kissing Hand," said Chester's mom, "We'll never be apart." "Just press your hand upon your cheek and feel that loving glow. It's Mommy saying, 'I love you,' wherever you may go." The Kissing Hand has become a children's classic that has touched the lives of millions of children and their parents. A Kissing Hand for Chester Raccoon conveys the heart of the story in rhyming verse, perfect for read-aloud and easy for even the little ones to remember and recite. With illustrations by Barbara Gibson that capture the warmth and beauty of the original artwork, toddlers now share in the benefits from Mrs. Raccoon's secret for making a child feel safe and secure.

Aww what a lovely sweet story. My goddaughter loved it. When baby raccoon is starting school he doesn't want to go he wants to stay by his mother's side but he simply has to go. Mother raccoon reassures her baby and kisses baby's palm saying that whenever they are apart she will always be in his heart. The kiss reaches baby's heart and he feels that loving glow. School no longer seems terrible or a place he doesn't want to go. This really is a lovely story. With beautiful illustrations

A Kissing Hand has always been a favourite story to read to young children when they are feeling anxious about going to school and leaving their parents. This book, a board book with a shortened story, will be a great one to use with younger children perhaps starting pre-school or junior kindergarten. The message is the same, the illustrations are still wonderful, colourful and adorable and the verse is easy to follow. This would also be a good book to use with early readers as the text is simple and it will not take as long to read as the original story. Nothing is lost with this versionlove is still very apparent. This would be a great addition to any family library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

I had never heard of this book, and I read it to Elizabeth after it was gifted to her. Oh so many tears. So sweet and perfect to read when little one is starting day care or school.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I bought the board book for my son because he is so young still. This book is about a raccoon who doesn't want to go to school. He just doesn't want to leave his mother. So she gives him a kiss on the hand and says that she is with him wherever he goes! Great adaptation of the large picture book. Definitely better for 3-4 year olds, it has much more text than a 0-2 year old would listen to. Baby & Toddler.

This one of my all time FAVORITE children's books EVER!!! To now have it available in a board book with a shortened story allows me to use it in my classes for children of a younger age (and attention span) and to allow my early reader to read it aloud with a feeling of accomplishment since it does not take as long to read. Believe me when I say that nothing is lost with this version and the heart, characters and love is still there! 5 stars

This is one of my most favourite books of all times. From the first moment I read it to my kindergarten class until this very day it still resonates deeply inside of me. This charming, condensed board book version of the best-selling picture book, "The Kissing Hand" will once again bind hearts together as little ones head off to school.

Chester is very anxious about attending Owl School (because racoons are nocturnal it will be night classes) and leaving his beloved mother's side at home. He bargains with her to be able to stay:

    "Chester Raccoon was very sad.
He looked at his mommy and cried.

"I don't want to go to school," he said.
"I want to stay home by your side."

He tells her he will read his books, play with his friends and favourite toys and won't make very much noise. Mrs. Raccoon sees the anguish on in her little one's heart and on his face and right then and there she shares a wonderful secret that is sure to ease the pain of his separation anxiety from her.

She opens up the palm of Chester's hand and plants a kiss. Her kiss seems electrically charged and it travels from his tiny palm, up his arm and straight into his heart.

"With a Kissing Hand," said Chester's mom,
    We'll never be apart."

"Just press your hand upon your cheek
    And feel the loving glow.
It's Mommy saying, 'I love you,'
    Wherever you may go."

You can see by now this sweet book is written in rhyme and is a perfect read aloud as you both snuggle together. It has language simple enough to be memorized and tucked in your little one's heart forever. This meaningful gesture and words can then be called forth when needed most... when mommy who is far away and unreachable. Her loving implanted kiss will be the perfect antidote for the overwhelming feelings of missing her.

    Summary:
It is time for Chester the Raccoon to go to school, however, he is afraid to go. His mother comforted him by telling him the story of the kissing hand. After hearing this story, Chester the Raccoon was more comfortable going to school. Chester then kissed his mother's hand too so she could feel the warmth of his love as well.

    Evaluation:
I feel this book deserves a 5 out of 5. It is a relatable story for students beginning kindergarten and first grade. Students on the first day are nervous about leaving their parents and coming to school, but after hearing this story they can ask their parents for kisses on their hands and feel more comfortable just like Chester.

    Activity:
For this text, I would suggest that since the story is so relatable for students, I feel that it should be a first day must have! Teachers can ease the pain of the first day by reading the story early in the morning and reassuring their students that their parents' love is with them all day long! The teachers could also make a craft for the students to take home to their parents with their hand print and a small heart cut out in the middle. This would be a special first day of kindergarten memory and help to soothe the first day fears.

I think that A Kissing Hand for Chester Raccoon is a fantastic book for kids. This book discusses how children could potentially feel when they are first going to school or going somewhere they are unfamiliar with. It also shows how parents attempt to make children feel better by telling them small things that make them feel at home or safe. Overall it is a good book for children because it lets the kids know it is normal and okay to feel uneasy about starting something new. The phrase that stuck with me in this book is "everyone has to do some things they don't want to do sometimes."

I read this with my daughter and I really enjoyed it. It has a good reading rhythm and cute illustrations. I think it's a great premise and will grow well with her. She isn't the most patient through the entire thing so maybe I would say it should go maybe for a slightly older group. I honestly gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars because Chester Raccoon is hard to say aloud.

A great children’s book on the topic of separation anxiety. My kids still love to get ‘kissing hands’ from me before they go anywhere, and I’ve had teachers tell me they hold their hands on their cheeks all class some days to feel brave & feel my love in a tangible way.

Excellent book. A Kissing Hand for Chester Raccoon was a lifesaver when sending my youngest child to kindergarten. I cut part of my shirt for him to carry in his pocket. He could take it out anytime he wanted so he could have me with him. I got the idea from the book.

  • Hilarie

Cute story. My son HATED this when he was little...but my daughter seemed "ok" with it today.

  • Mort

Book is somewhat emotional. Good book

I love The Kissing Hand so when I found a board book version, I bought it. It is very cute, but I think the hard cover book is better. Still adorable illustrations, and message.

**I received a free copy of this book for review from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own. As usual.**

I have never read The Kissing Hand book, though I've heard of it. Curious I requested this book and my request was granted. I read it quickly to myself during my daughters tumbling class and was not too impressed. However, I have learned my response to books is usually indicative of where I am at the time and rarely the book itself. I decided to wait to cast my review until I had read it to my children for bedtime.

Great idea. I read it first to one child and then to the other. They each loved the double listen (one while looking at the illustrations, the other while listening as I showed them to their sibling) and I have to admit, it's brevity lends well to repeated readings - which any parent knows is almost certain with any board book. Illustrations are gentle and help move the story along without detracting at all.

Chester Raccoon is once again put at ease by his mother when she tells him how much he will love school and to help ease anxiety she tells him can carry her love with him through her kiss. Whenever he is lonely or missing his mother all he needs to do is press the hand his mother kissed to his cheek and he will feel her love and comfort all over again.

This is a touching way to help a young child cope with the separation from a parent. It could be as simple as a sleepover at a friend's or relative's house or starting school or it could be that a loved one is going away for a short trip or hospital stay. Perhaps even for a permanent loss of a loved one. This is a very useful tool for both the parent and the child. If for some reason you know a child facing an new experience for the first time with out the presence or support of family, then you may want to take a look at "The Kissing Hand".

I remember my mom getting my sister this book when my sister was living in a residential home.
It was one of the few books I remembered liking even though it was below my reading level/age.
I got my daughter to allow me to kiss her hand and kiss mine but she wouldn't sit still to listen to it.
I hope with age and repeated attempts it becomes one of her favorites too.

  • Lily H

It was unsanitary-lots of animals that probably had rabies in the first place, were kissing each others hands and passing it along after they put it on their chest. I would not recommend this book. Plus who names their raccoon, Chester?

  • Donna Maguire

This book had a really good concept and I think it meets the description really well. The characters in the book are good and the images are lovely, its a positive and easy to follow story and can see it being a firm favourite. Its definately that kind of book I'd read to my little one.

  • Sandy

Sweet book for my sweet girl! I love how Chester goes to school at night since he's a raccoon and raccoons are nocturnal.

  • Shana Karnes

Such a cute book recommended to me by the kids I used to babysit!

  • April Palmer

After my parents read this book to me 20 times, I would make them kiss my hand when Chesters mom kisses his hand.

Chester doesn't want to go to school he wants to stay home with mom. Momma raccoon has a way to fix it so that he feels that she is with him.
