Autumn Gardens Reviews

  • Richard Newbold

Visually splendid book about the garden in autumn, these days regularly extending towards Christmas as early hard frosts are seemingly a thing of the past. The photography, by Jonathan Buckley is sumptuous, both in the detailed close-ups and the vistas of autumn flowers, leaves and compositions. What I wanted (and what is largely missing from the text) were realistic and new techniques and ideas that will enable the gardener with a modest sized plot to get some more colour and interest into what is often a dull time of year, where apart from fitful displays of roses and dahlias there's not much going on. Some nice illustrated lists of berries, foliage, grasses as well as flowers, so there is something to learn, but not hugely imaginative in opening our eyes to the potential of this season of the year, in my opinion.

There are more than twenty books on winter gardens but only four on autumn gardens, all of them fairly old. Sounds like there's a gap in the market there. This one has dazzling photography, with some brilliant plant combinations portrayed, but is let down by the text, which is not very informative.

The author is from Texas but wrote the book whilst living & gardening in England. The book is written with English gardening conditions in mind.
