What happens when a couple has the perfect life and then that life is jostled by something unexpected? Will they be strong enough to survive it together?
This contemporary western novella takes place in British Columbia's Cariboo Region during the years of 1994 through 1995, in a fictional town called Caribou Crossing. I was drawn to the book by its cover, assuming that it would be about ranching and it sounded like a series I'd enjoy. It was also a free read when I downloaded it.
Wade and Miriam Bly fall in love as teenagers and marry early in their adulthood. Life is "a dream come true" until the "moment" that changes everything. The book follows this couple back and forth through their history together, often through Miriam or Wade's memories of their past. So the reader is dropped into the "moment," not really sure what has happened, but you can guess a couple scenarios so you're not completely surprised when it does occur. That doesn't make it any less emotional, though.
Even though I didn't know exactly what happened until more toward the end of the book, it wasn't in the forefront of my mind. Sometimes when you're taken back and forth through a person's life, it can be distracting for the reader but this wasn't the case for me. I forgot about that and concentrated on their unfolding story.
Miriam and Wade had the perfect relationship, the perfect home, the perfect jobs, the perfect sex life...everything was a little too perfect and I began to wonder what would happen to them when reality hit. A little foreshadowing, perhaps?
I'm not normally fond of books that focus on a couple after they've found their happy-ever-after moment and go on to live their lives, because that's not always as uplifting or as engaging to me. I much prefer the journey up to that happy-ever-after moment, rather than follow life's disappointments and how they survive them. And because this couple "seemed" so perfect, it wasn't as realistic for me. I kept wondering if they ever argue or if either one of them ever forgot to put the cap on the toothpaste.
At first, I was ready to bail on this story just because I felt the sadness coming and couldn't relate to their perfect world, but I was curious about their daughter and her best friend...especially the best friend, who seemed to be a boy with a difficult upbringing, so I continued to read to the end. The best part of this novella is getting to know their daughter and her best friend as children. The second best part is getting a peek into the second book in the CARIBOU CROSSING series, HOME ON THE RANGE, and realizing it's about the children as adults. Just from reading that first chapter, I think book two will land in the TBR Mountain Range sometime in the future.
Overall, the novella did its job in creating interest for the next book, a full size novel, and because I received it for free as a special promotion, it was worth reading to introduce me to the next book.
And for those who are wondering, fun fact per the author, Cariboo region is the correct spelling and it's the reason for the difference of Caribou and Cariboo within my review. You thought I made a typo, didn't you? LOL

This was good. It altered back and forth with current events. A romance with a little drama, it was a good short read.

This review is of “Caribou Crossing”, book #1 in the “Caribou Crossing” series by Susan Fox.
The book begins with a wedding between Miriam Torrence and Wade Bly in the fictional town of Caribou Crossing. Miriam and Wade are 19 when they marry. Fast forward eight years. Miriam is in the hospital for reasons that will be explained later as Wade flashes back to various memories of how life was for himself, Miriam and their 7 year-old daughter, Jessica, their horse-obsessed daughter.
After his parents leave for Arizona for health reasons, Wade and Miriam take over the family ranch. Miriam also works part-time in a veterinary office and is taking bookkeeping classes to augment the family finances. Miriam becomes pregnant with their second child, but complications ensue and this is why she is in the hospital. It is not good news. After she leaves the hospital, Miriam and Wade’s lives change, and not for the better. Cracks in the armor of their marriage emerge, leaving them angry and hurt with each other. However, in the end, Miriam and Wade acknowledge that they need help, and this allows them to address their issues and they put their lives back on track.
Upside: It is very rare to see a romance novel which focuses on what happens after a couple marries. Usually, romance novels are all about the chase between the hero and heroine, then they marry and have their “Happily Ever After”, implying strongly that their married lives are perfect, which as anyone who has been in any relationship knows, is a TOTAL LIE! So it’s great to see a book where we see the other side.
Ms. Fox’s writing style is very soft, allowing me as a reader to view Miriam and Will not as words on a screen (I read “Caribou Crossing” on my Kindle as an ebook), but as real people who I would like to get to know. Miriam and Will are both nice, pleasant people who I grew to care about and root for as I read the book. I felt their pain, their anger, their sadness, but also their happiness, and that is the mark of a great author, to make their readers feel their characters emotions.
Downside: I felt Ms. Fox could have gone deeper into her characters emotions, but this is a novella, so there really wasn’t room to do this at the level I like to see. Hopefully, this will occur in future books.
Sex: A couple of love scenes, one of which is creative, and good.
Violence: None.
Bottom Line: In my opinion, the purpose of a first-in-a series book is to get readers interested in the books that follow. With “Caribou Crossing”, Ms. Fox has more than achieved this goal. -

Caribou Crossing was an okay read for me.
I liked that it was about the life of a married couple. Most romance books only show the happily ever after . They never show life after marriage. I thought it was clever of the author to show what the family went through.
What I really didn't like, was the back and forth through the present and the past. Sometimes it was confusing, and in others it was pointless. At some pints in the book it was hard to get through. It is never good when you put a book down, and you don't really want to finish. I thought the book was dragged out. It seemed like the author was trying to add content to fill the pages. That is just how I saw it.
I also liked their daughter and her friend. I knew they were going to have a book of their own. I am excited to read it! The daughter Jessica, was obsessed with horses. I really liked her friend. They were perfect for each other even at a young age.
This book was so realistic, and for that, I gave it 3.5 stars. -
It's an easy read that invests in starry eyed couples and personal strength to overcome all hardships, including depression. It also felt a lot like a lazy narrative that just jumps in time, not giving characters the time and space to develop. The Brazilian translation was sufferable, especially in the scenes that were supposed to be erotic.

Roller coaster of emotions
Fall in love with Mirium and Wade as they face life's ups and downs together. The back and forth between present day and past memories was a little difficult to follow at first when listening to audio. This book will make you run the gauntlet of emotions, it is Funny, sad, heartbreaking and romantic. It is a stand alone read. -
great read
Such a loving romance they loved each other so much threw so much I wasn't sure what was going to happen but now I do and if you want to know you'll have to read it I couldn't put it down I read it in a few hrs -
A good read.
A true to life story. Young love and dreams, life happening, depression and problems, awakening to their problems, facing them and choosing to work towards solving the problems. -
This book was entirely too "Polyanna" for me. I struggled to get through it. I was intrigued enough, however, by their daughter's story to purchase Home On The Range (Book 2).

Short, light and fluffy. Like weak Kool-aid, didn't really satisfy. Not interested enough in the next book to pay full price.
