My Brief History Reviews
-
Thanks to Netgalley.com and Random House Publishing Group for a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
Cross-posted on my blog,
The Periodic Table of Elephants.
I have never read any Hawking before *gasp*, so what a place to start, on his autobiography. Titled 'My Brief History' is really is brief and to the point.
The style of this autobiography is terse, to the point, and mainly about his academic achievements. His children and wives get a brief mention, which is reassuring, with the only other personal story being that of the onset of his disability and the management of it. Which is also brief in comparison to the rest of the story.
I have thought about why this style may have come about and I have several theories, each may play a role. Foremost, he is a scientist, and has given us the facts of his life. There was no embellishment, because scientists don't tend to go for all that touchy-feely stuff.
It takes a lot of effort for Stephen to write. He says explicitly that he manages three or four words per minute using his speech system. This short autobiography translates to many hours of work. Give the guy a break.
He is a private guy, and would prefer not to have all his washing hung out. Although you do get snippets now and then. For instance, when he thought he was dying in the 70s and his children were young, he and his wife decided upon a future father and husband after he was gone. The man that was selected moved in to get better acquainted with the children. Stephen's condition did not go according to what the doctors predicted and months later his marriage was over. It is obvious he did this out of love for his wife and children. It is tragic as to how it turned out.
The closest autobiography in style to this that comes to mind is Roald Dahl's 'Boy' and 'Going Solo'. Both authors give brief tales that are full of facts and not much feelings.
So a nice quick read that gives us a look at the personality and work that the amazing man has done over the last 50 or so years. Just be careful about your expectations of what this autobiography will give you. It will not give you an in depth warts and all account of his whole life. But still well worth the read if you are a fan or a fellow scientist interested in how famous academics live and research. It has given me the inspiration to move his other works up my to-read list. -

Very very good. Stephen Hawking's mind an way of writing a book is just genial. And after all he's been through, he still published this. All my respect
-

This makes sense to me. Not the physics, that will never make sense to me. The physics are leagues beyond my comprehension. But, the heavy leaning on physics instead of personal detail does fit perfectly for what I know of Mr. Hawking. Which is not much more than what I knew before going into this book.
Ask a man who dedicated his life to finding the secrets of the universe and the meaning behind our existence to write a story of his life, what do you really expect to get? I was happy for the small tidbits of his personal life he chose to share and I was equally as happy to read of his scientific research. I could easily tell that his work is just as much, if not more, a part of who he considers himself to be.
A truly inspiring man. -
With the passing of the great cosmologist last week, it seemed fitting to read his autobiography as a way of appreciating the man a bit more. It’s a very compact account of Hawking’s life, hitting the high spots without going into great detail. One of the more charming aspects for me was the inclusion of a fair number of personal photographs, many supplied by Hawking himself and his sister.
Numerous tributes to Hawking last week referred to his sense of humour. Unfortunately, that didn’t really come through to me in this volume. I can also appreciate that he wanted to be known for more than his ALS, but I thought that a little more detail about the disease would have been appropriate. It seemed to me that his family, especially his children, got extremely little page-time. I didn’t require a tell-all or anything too detailed, but knowing how the children turned out and what they chose to do with their lives would have been interesting. I also wonder if they worry that they may have a predisposition to getting ALS themselves.
To be fair, each person gets to be the star of their own autobiography. Hawking concentrates on what he obviously deemed the most important part of his life—his research. Many of the details that I’m interested in, he probably decided were not his to tell. -
This is a very straightforward, short recount of Stephen Hawking's life told by himself. It is beyond inspiring and it left me in complete awe for this man but it was not full of sentimental heartfelt chapters describing his endless struggles in life and his battle against his disability. On the contrary, this was mostly facts, facts, facts with the occasional pondering here and there. It was not at all difficult to read and only had scientific-talk when he described his accomplishments and the theories he worked on on cosmology and black holes and the such.
I'm really glad i read this. -
Nothing wrong with this, but it didn't offer up a whole lot I didn't already know, so it felt a little meh for me.

I really enjoyed this. You can tell he is a scientist as he gets down to the facts and doesn’t waste any words but somehow I found, for biographies, that kind of works really well. It’s also far from a dry read as Hawking’s humour appears throughout the book. Very interesting.

Stephen Hawking, one of the most famous physicists and researchers in cosmology in the world, tells the story of his life in this book. Did you know that he is self learned when it comes to maths? Or that he wasn't happy when his little sister was born? This book includes information that shows the man behind the success.
What made him interested in science and so successful? As a young boy, he was fascinated by systems and wanted to control them. He used to take apart items to see how they worked, but couldn't set them back. Theory has always been his field, not the practical part. But solving the greatest mystery of all, the system of the universe, was a way of controlling it, he thought. That became his subject.
His family was not rich with a lot of possibilities. They had to think about money. He spended several summer holidays in a wagon previously owned by roamers. His father built bunks with stretchers from the second world war. His father came from a poor family and was very economical, refusing to turn on the central heat, and instead putting on several layers of clothes. He also seems to have been a very determined person. He was a doctor and his research was focused on tropical illness and meant a lot of traveling. During his time in India he refused to eat Indian food and hired a former chef in the brittich army that cooked english food.
Stephen Hawking is fascinating. He is self learned when it comes to mathematics. He is a math professor, but has no formal education in mathematics after his time at St. Albans where he read some maths as a seventeen year old. How could anyone be able to learn such complicated math by himself? He later tutored students at Cambridge and made sure to be one week ahead of the syllabus.
He got scholarship and began at Oxford after St. Albans, as a seventeen year old, and the others in his class had done military service and was much older. The mentality at Oxford is interesting - either you were so talented and intelligent that you didn't have to study, or you should accept your incompetence and get bad grades. If you worked hard to achieve good grades, you were a so called grey man. During his three years at Oxford, Stephen Hawking took a test before staring there, and the final exams before getting his degree. He started as a research student at Cambridge 1962.
When 21 years old, he got the diagnosis ALS and learned that he had two year left to live. Having met Jane Wilde around the same time, he started to work hard for the first time in his life, to get a job and be able to marry her.
The first half of the book is very interesting. Then, something happens in the book. Stephen Hawking leaves the story of his life and delve into the world of time like curves, singularities and black holes, which doesn't fit in a biography, but perhaps another book. When he wrote A brief history of time the publisher made him simplify some of the content so a regular reader would understand it, before it was published. Then he wrote A briefer history of time, which of course demands concentration but is understandable and very interesting. What's not understandable is this transition from biography to facts about time travel. But probably physics are a part of him and he is a part of physics.
Except that, the book is written straight forward, without much digressions. Stephen Hawking uses a matter of fact-tone. He is not much for shape and dramaturgy, but tells the story straight out, and that makes the book somewhat uneven. It contains much about his achievements and conferences around the world, which is fine, but it would have been interesting to learn more about him, his family and his struggle with life. He got two more years, but is still alive today, and continues to captivate a whole world. -
I'm giving this a neutral 3-star rating. From the description of the book, I thought this would be a biographical telling of Stephen Hawking. Perhaps I misunderstood, but his biography probably makes up less than 50% of the entire book, which is quite brief.
It starts out well enough, beginning with his Great-Grandfather, and working up to his own birth during WWII. Then the accelerator is floored, as he zooms through childhood and into his college and post-doc years. From there, it's physics, physics, physics. Or whatever it is he's talking about. I admit I have very little knowledge of physics or the nuances of the varied disciplines that comprise his chosen fields of study. For this reason, I was utterly baffled and consequently bored with the lengthy discussions of background for his various works.
Every once in a while, he'll throw in a humorous bit, which is refreshing, but they are few and far between. At one point, he says, "The doctor told my wife he was sending me home to die. I have since changed doctors." Hawking also reveals small snippets that would be great to expand upon, but he does not. For example, he'll say something like, "This person did that, which I didn't like." But he doesn't go into any further detail about why he didn't like that. This happens on multiple occasions, and left me wanting more of the human side of his biography, and less of the cerebral side.
I've not read A Brief History of Time, and after reading this book, I'm not sure I will. Even though he says that he wrote it specifically for people with little understanding of physics, even the brief points he touched on in his biography were over my head.
So my neutral rating is because I felt that it was insufficient as a biography, but perhaps others would find that it meets their needs for providing more information and background on the pedantic side of Hawking.
Audiobook note: I listened to the audiobook, so unfortunately I did not get to see the photos that are part of the printed version. It was capably narrated by Matthew Brenher. I was joking to myself that it might be read with Hawking's trademark voicebox, and was surprised to find the book indeed starts out with it! For just a few sentences at the beginning of each chapter, Hawking narrates, then Brenher's voice overlays Hawking, and eventually Hawking's fades out for the rest of the chapter. It was an interesting conceit, but I don't know why they kept doing it for each chapter. The novelty of it wore off pretty quickly. -
Kupasan mendalam mengenai teori yang disusun oleh Hawking boleh dibaca dalam A Brief History of Time, The Grand Design dan Brief Answers to the Big Questions. -

"The Theory of Everything" was a romantic drama film. I would summarize it as "the love they felt at that moment was true and opted to part away before things soured too much and scarred whatever was left good!" Or, in other words, both of them felt they would be better off with somebody else.
Hawking wrote this memoir with "as-a-matter-of-fact" tone. So, it might read a little bit dry. And it's also very brief. I wanted to brush away this "factual" tone thinking Stephen isn't quite a writer. But then I recalled Stephen has authored so many papers, articles for popular mass media, and wrote a hugely celebrated cult book "A Brief History of Time". Then why this minimalist attitude in writing?
Uhh, I do not find much standing out in this memoir. It is too much of a record of what he did at various moments in his life. He briefly touches various points in his life. It seems he used to see people as "intellectuals or non-intellectuals" within their social circle. In some places he gave away his emotions but only very briefly. For example, when he was diagnosed first with his disability and he met Jane, then how the prospect of starting a life with her inspired him to progress in his work. Or as his physical condition deteriorated, he thought to himself why did this happen to him.
Stephen briefly mentions his not winning a Noble for any of his work. Now, that he has passed away that wouldn't happen anyway! In the concluding chapter, Stephen tries to reflect and says that he is more/ less content with his life as it turned out despite his disability. Because he focused on what he could still do with his disability and let go of things that disability didn't allow him anymore...
Finally, it goes without saying that Stephen had one of the most beautiful minds of our time! -

For me it was a nice read. But I would have liked more personal topics, less explanations of physical theories because Mr. Hawking seems to be an interesting and extraordinary human beeing even without his achievements in science, but this book did not deliver this.
-
My Brief History was a brief memoir by Hawking. It was written not as a long detailed autobiography but a brief history of his life which included pictures which I liked. It includes a little bit about his parents, childhood, education-preparatory school and college, his marriage, children and his career which detailed his areas of interest in astrophysics. He also detailed a bit about working around his disability.
In this book, I found he had a sense of humor and would make bets with peers about cosmology and always paid his bets. He was married twice but always spoke well of his family as he knew how difficult it was for them to take care of him with his disability. He claimed he pursued theoretical physics because he wasn’t good at math and it was too difficult for him to do experimental work.
This was a good introduction about the life of this brilliant scientist who lived for 56 years with ALS a disability he was only to survive with for a few years. His passion for science and his ambition to achieve success in spite of his disability makes his life inspiring. It could have been a bit longer but when one realizes that he could only write 3 words a minute every chapter is priceless. More adept biographers can write a longer narrative with much more detail. -
I have always been intrigued and fascinated by Stephen Hawking but knew very little about him, his work and his life. After seeing the movie, "The Theory of Everything" based on the book by his first wife Jane, I became even more interested and wanted to learn more.
My Brief History is truly that. A very short, quick insight into the man and the scientist; touching briefly on his personal life and two marriages. It is a very small window we are given to look into this great man's life. There is a bit more here of his work in science and physics and his research....much of which I won't pretend to comprehend!!! Interesting too is his research into time travel with his conclusion being that he doesn't think time travel will ever be possible but he still encourages discussion and further research of this question. If for no other reason than to show why it is impossible. As fascinating as black holes, theory of relativity, quantum physics are they are no where near as interesting, to me at least, as this man's life and how he overcame so many obstacles to be where he is today.
