Right just finished this book and my fears of Derek's storyline with Amelia was confirmed and even though he was under a spell I still HATED IT!!!! Normally I would have stopped reading it if it had been another book but because I had read all the other books I persevered with it. I think the only reason I could finish it was due to the fact that I could really feel his love for Sophia and that helped a little with his scenes with Amelia...... by not much though! Still the story had a lot of things going on as well as a really happy moment when even I smiled and then an even bigger smile towards the end. This book was def more in depth but I still felt there were too many scenes with other characters that I honestly felt there was no need of I admit I skipped over their parts I just didn't find any relevance to them apart from one scene by Kyle. Overall a good book but wish the situation with Derek and Amelia did not happen otherwise I would have rated it 4stars.

A Blaze of Sun pretty much started out right where the previous book stopped. Sofia and Derek are struggling to save The Shade. They are preparing for an impending attack from the other covens. And, they fear the hunters will also attack. They are still desperately searching for a cure. For a way for the vampires to become human again. I really enjoyed this book but for me it wasn’t the best one. It was told in several different POV’s. It was interesting to delve a lot deeper into all of the characters but at times I felt that the story lagged a bit.
In this book we are introduced to Emelia. She is a vampire and very powerful witch and is so beautiful. What Derek doesn’t know is that Emilia was “designed” to appeal to Derek in every way that would be most pleasing to him. Emilia is the daughter of “The Elder” or the original vampire who is the most dark and evil of vampires. Emilia is in love with Derek and she wants him. Her father wants Sofia. He wants to rid The Shade of her light. I really enjoyed watching the continuation of the love between Derek and Sofia. Sofia has evolved so much from the first book. In my mind, in this book she has truly become the Queen she has been destined to become. I have to keep reminding myself that she is only 18 years old. I also loved watching the relationship change between her and her father. All of her life she has never been able to experience the love of a parent and in this book that is finally within her grasp.
At times in this book, Derek actually got on my nerves a bit. I have felt this same thing in some of the previous books. That he gets annoyingly whiny at times. But by the end of the book we see the King that Derek is when he commands the respect he deserves.
All in all, I feel like this book is a true test of good versus evil, light versus darkness. The strength of the love between Sofia and Derek is truly put to the test. Can their love survive against all that wish to rip them apart? Can The Shade survive against those that want to destroy it? Will Sofia and Derek ever become the King and Queen of the island they both love so much?
“Its her light. Darkness cannot have control over the light. Darkness is powerless against light.” -
I am at a loss for words after reading this book. So much bloodshed and drama but all was necessary. Even with the cliffhanger, I LOVED the ending. Derek and Sofia's love is tested in so many different ways. I dont even know how to give a proper review for A Blaze of Sun without giving away the plot. So having said all of that.... if you love vampire books, if you love this series, then you absolutely must read this book NOW!!
-
Bella Bella Bella... You have done a brilliant job with this book! I smashed it in 3 hours. I could not put it down! I absolutely love this series! Now I have to wait for number 6 : ( I don't think I can wait very long... Please please please hurry up... Hehe! This one was defiantly my favorite... You fulfilled all my hopes with this book! Absolutely brilliant! I haven't been this satisfied since I read the Thoughtless trilogy and Crossfire, I've read a few since them and they didn't come close to those books, but your Vampire series nailed it! Well done and a huge THANK YOU for sharing your wonderful imagination with us all! I'm telling everyone about it : ) 5 wonderful stars! xx

We not even gonna bring up the fact that Derek was cheating? Sure he was under a spell but I think they should at least talk about it.
-
I think this may be the last I read of this series for a while. It was still a good story, but I just can't get over the cheating on Derek's part and how it wasn't even discussed or anything. Ughh, even though he was under a spell when it happened, I just couldn't get over this. Still too many POV's for my taste, but I still enjoyed the story.

Favorite Lines “Don’t ask me what true sanctuary is, Sofia. I fought for it for an entire century, practically gave up my soul for it. I thought I already got sanctuary after establishing the Shade only to find out that I didn’t…
“If I lose her, Emilia, you might as well kill me. I would rather die than live the rest of my immortalityee without her.” Emilia stared up at me as if it dawned on her for the first time that I was truly in love wwith Sofia. “I can’t believe you conquered the lure of the darkness, Derek. For her.”
“Love and light will always win against hatred and darkness, Emilia. It may take years, generations even but it always eventually will. Always.”`
“You saved me, Sofia. You rescued me from myself. You gave me room to feel again, to love again, to once again believe in goodness and kindness and the possibility of light even in the darkest of night.”
“It was the point when I’d gotten used to the pain and I was about to surrender to death, then I heard Sofia from the other side of the door. She was humming… the sweet, gentle tone of her voice hummed to me our song. It was exactly what I needed to remind myself that I couldn’t die. I simply couldn’t.”
This is one of the most emotional books I have ever read by this author. There was so much going on that you couldn’t stop to do anything but flip the page!
The LOVE of Derek and Sophie is something beautiful and amazing. In this beginning of this book I started to get worried because of the lack of time they spent together. They both are running the Shade now. Derek as King and Sophie is running the catacombs. There is a lot to take care of after the riots and the war where Derek’s father tried to take over the shade. Then there is also the dreams Derek is having about the originals daughter Emilia (I say that with disgust) Sophie feels like Derek is hiding something from her. The Original wants Derek to embrace his dark side again but, he knows he can’t do that with Sophie in the picture. He wants her dead and by any means! This book also lets us get a closer look into Kyle and Anna! I love them. I would love to see them together maybe even with Ian too? This book is filled with so much forgiveness and love. I being the baby we all know I am cried numerous times in this book and it was worth every tear drop. The author makes you want to jump into this story and never leave. The ending whew the ending was great. When I first started this book I was so worried that this would be the last book but there’s no way this is it. I AM COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS until the next book comes. ANYONE WHO LIKES PARANORMAL ROMANCE THEN THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU
Was given this book by author in exchange for an honest review
FIVE SANCTUARY FAIRIES -
I hate love triangles. Why are they a thing??
A Blaze of Sun was interesting but annoying at the same time. Someone from Derek's past comes back into his life and tries to break him and Sofia up. It almost works. ALMOST.
Derek and Sofia's love grows more and more every day. They want to get married one day.. but once Emilia comes into their lives.. Derek tries to move that marriage up closer and closer. Something about this mysterious woman has his underwear up in knots. He doesn't know what it is.. but he can't trust the bitch one bit.
Of course, he does a stupid thing. Mostly because he's a man and they are stupid and make stupid decisions. He agrees to go to her castle/world for a week. Of course, she has her own evil plan because she wants him to fall in love with her. She puts him under her spell and gets him to agree to murder Sofia.
This book frustrated me to no end. I hated how Derek and Sofia were apart. I hated how easily he was manipulated. Also, how did his dick magically fall into her vagina? Honest question that annoyed me to no end.
Luckily, in the end.. neither of them were murdered. They got their happy ending eventually but the ending of this book annoyed me too. Another guy is magically obsessed with Sofia. Can people stop being obsessed with Derek and Sofia?? Can they have a break for all of this? Please! -
I'm starting to lose interest, because it's a bit difficult to believe how much in love Derek and Sofia are given how much time they spend apart. If I'm at war and might lose the person I profess to love with all my heart, then I'm spending every single night in their arms - not away from each other - him sleeping in his penthouse and her sleeping in The Catacombs. That makes no sense. Sofia was in The Catacombs because of a law that Gregory Novak put in place - he's long dead and Derek is King. Maybe I'm just too old and jaded to find the concept of 'saving sex for marriage' noble when they've already done the dirty deed. And the whole story line with finding the cure and testing it out on Camilla seemed contrived - the second 'test' was plain stupid given how many smart people were putting their heads together - the answer was painfully obvious. The side story with Emilia also seemed contrived and really didn't serve any purpose as far as I could tell other than shock value. I guess I was expecting the writing to improve by book five, but it really hasn't. In addition, this isn't a series you can pick up on book five and enjoy (you'd be completely lost), so why the author bothers to dump so much background into the story is beyond me and quite annoying for the reader.
Do I keep going with #6 & #7? Hmmmm....not really sure. I've read some of the reviews and I don't think I can stomach where the author is taking the story. I kind of like the HEA at the end of this book for Sofia and Derek, and the fact that I don't really care to find out how the other few loose ends get tied up, tells me it might be time to stop. -
Hope this book hurrys up now I'm getting fed up of waiting grrrrrrrr

HOLY HOTNESS THAT. WAS. GOOD.
Yah Bella this one was as good as the first!!!!!!!!
I am going to have to code a lot of this because I can't really go into detail without giving away a lot of spoilers.
Sofia and Derek are in a relationship rut. Not one that normal people have I might add. They steal a moment together, they kiss, he drinks her blood lol!
Ingrid is still evil as ever. Deceiving Aiden and (trying) Sofia. Emilia is back and tries to win Derek's affection but regardless of her stunning looks, Derek, is committed to Sofia. This infuriates her and she goes to drastic measures to win him over. Her true identity comes out (SHOCKER) and she bribes Derek into going back to the Blood Keep to be hers exclusively for a week where he brainwashes him to believing he loves her and want to kill Sofia! Meanwhile Sofia is distraught and with the help of her dad takes over control of the Shade while he is gone.
He returns. Feces hit the oscillator so to speak and dammit I really can't tell you anything else because it was soooo good and I don't want to ruin it for you.
YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES!!!!!!!
Bravo Bella. I'm going to be a freaking train wreck before May!!!! -
I'm starting to like kindle authors more than epic reads authors. People you have to give a chance to a shade of vampire series. It might seem at first that everything is the same as other YA but Bella Forrest takes more risks than traditional published authors. She pushes the boundaries of violence and sex and her books are usually short and entertaining. Incredibly, I'm still not done with the characters which is good because come on 20 or so books?
So far I'm really enjoying it. -
WTF more insta-LOVE, Emilia is who exactly? Derick doesn't know her but she has unrequited love for him!!!
GAG****
Ok maybe I am being judgmental. This is the first chapter after all. (This does not bode well for this installment - said the voice inside her head).
01.7.15 edit
So I get to the part where Vivienne has been placed under a sleeping spell...right.
Then I have to read a statement like this:
Xavier’s jaw clenched. “Inside her bedroom. Fast asleep. She refuses to wake up, Derek.”.
Besides the series having lost of moments where you kinda have to fill in the blanks yourself because it often feels like you've walked in in the middle of two peoples conversation.
Then you have to endure people doing stupid things like looking for people for hours. Isn't the persons home the most logical place to start looking even having someone stay there while others search?
If that wasn't enough you then have to read sentences like that. How can someone refuse to wake up if they cannot speak, which I assume the spell wouldn't allow. Refusal would be something like, Go away and leave me alone.
Maybe using a statement like, "We are unable to wake her. or We can't seem to wake her no matter what we do."
sSigh that's all I can do right now.

So finished this book....finally. People always ask, if you hate something why keep reading it. Well I have this problem, it's called hope. I tend to hope that a book will get better, I mean why else would there be so many rave reviews.
There was a point where I thought that maybe the copy of the book had a strange amount of editing errors that were not the fault of the writer or her editor. Then I came across a review were the reviewer had also picked up the sentence where Emilia "crooned" her neck to kiss Derick.
And my reaction was "thank god I thought I was loosing my mind!!".
This book was a frustrating read, because people are doing so many unnecessary things, so many stupid things. For example:
Sofie's mother dies when the test the cure on her..., they knew right from the get go that for the cure to work they needed an immune's blood yet they still go through with the stupid experiment, because of some misguided desire on Adien's part not to let her have any of Sofie's blood. I mean what was the point of that exactly, revenge, torture then death. Because that's all I saw.
And then you let the hunters onto your Island. Why?
Sigh. Onto A Gate of Night. -
A Shade of Vampire is one of series I love this year. I think each sequel is getting better than its prequel. However I can't say I liked this book more than I loved the prequels, though I still count that this is an enjoyable book too and I liked reading it.
The main problem for me was there were too many POV here. There were 9 POV, from Emilia, Sofia, Derek, Ingrid, Adrien, Ian, Kyle, Vivienne, and Kiev. I think it made the story was kind of unfocused because when the story began to the climax from one POV, it changed to another POV. It made me lose the rhythm of the flow of the story, if it is possible.
Another thing was the repetitive pattern that happened to some of the characters were quite annoyed me, especially Ingrid and Emilia. They were described as very evil characters and Emilia was one powerful character that even Derek couldn't do anything while he was under her control. But the way . It made less dramatic while I expected it would be big so it was quite anticlimactic for me.
I still enjoyed and liked reading it, though. And will definitely continue to read the sequels because I haven’t bored yet with Derek and Sophia and other characters from the Shade. -
I skipped the previous 3 books hoping to read about a more grown version of this couple but....
I skipped the previous 3 books hoping to read about a more grown version of this couple but....
What a disappointment. The hero falls in love with another women for no good reason but still loves Sofia??? Sofia isn't really bothered by the fact that Derek is insanely attracted to another woman. He sleeps next to Sofia and loves Sofia through 5 books but they never make love??? Yet he sleeps with this other woman immediately!! Sorry but this series lost my respect. I need a little more reality in this fantasy. Derek should have been booted the minute he started fantasizing about another woman... You can't have your cake and eat it too. I think it in the end this book sends a dangerous message that it is okay for a woman to love and forgive a man with poor morals. The author tried to wrap it up in a nice bow with saying he was under a spell but that will only carry his unacceptable behaviour so far before the eye rolling starts. -
“Every triumph – whether by me or my siblings – was met with another challenge. We were never enough. We never achieved enough to justify a rest. That was the Elder’s endless and deadly cycle, and I was well aware that I could never get away from it.”
I‘m starting to feel exactly like this quote. The series is never-ending. Every book ends with a huge cliffhanger that is becoming to feel forced. There are always new threats (each larger than before), new secrets (each more unbelievable), new antagonists (so many that I lost count). The first few books are great but now it’s just repetitive and increasingly far-fetched. The more Ms. Bella Forrest “expands” the world, the more plot holes and loose-ends appear.
I’m a little bit exhausted now so I’m not going to read the rest 45 books (can you believe that there are 50+ books?!?) in the series any time soon. 😣 -
I had high hopes for this series and the quality of writing is what's really bringing down my rating. The syntax and word choices are all over the place - not to mention (IMO) unrealistic scenes that the author explores.
-
Things got all sorts of crazy in this book. All of the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. That ending... wow. I have a feeling I'm going to like where this series is headed.
-
I can't stop reading the series because, yes, it's captivating, but it's still a bit juvenile and tedious.
A lot of belief is needing suspension. -
I'm just over this series. Nothing against Shaddicts or Bella Forrest but I simply don't care enough to continue reading. I feel like I'm being immersed in a soap opera and with all the POV in this book, it's just too many characters to really develop an interest in. I would prefer to focus on Sofia and Derek rather than Ingrid and Aiden and Claudia and...well, you get the picture. Kudos and respect to Forrest for creating a world that so many people love but I'm just not one of them.
-
I'll admit I did a lot of skimming of this. It was just so...blahhhh.
First of all there was another one of those scenes: the ones where Aiden questions how his own daughter can love a vampire..and then proceeds to tell us: because she wasn't raised by him. And then he regrets that and then the scene always turns around and questions why his daughter isn't a hunter like him. There's been one of these scenes every book since he's been introduced. And every time, it's like BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T RAISE HER THAT'S WHY SHE DOESN'T HATE VAMPIRES. NOW SHUT UP. It's really annoying to read these scenes.
The first half of the book is a lot of the same and that's why I skimmed. Impending doom, Derek and Sofia wondering how they will be together. I'm getting tired of these books cause it's always the same with them.
The second half introduces/brings back an old character from before the beginning of book one: a certain witch. She was annoying because, like, obsessive much. The whining of how Derek doesn't love her was So. Annoying. Every chapter when she had him in her grasp was about this. That whole part of the book disturbed me. He remembered Sofia, then he didn't. Then he did and faked he didn't. Then he really didn't. Because she managed to put him under a spell which then he broke free of. Then back under. It was very hard to follow. And also through a lot of that they had sex. So basically he cheated on Sofia, sometimes knowing and sometimes unknowing. WHich he never ended up telling her.
I liked the ending the best. The way they found the cure was cool but also because they finally get married!! Whew maybe the whole "how can we be together" thing will stop now.
I want to finish of Sophia and Derek's story cause I do want to know how it ends but then I think I need a break from this series/author. -
At the end of the last book Emilia appears and Derek feels the attraction immediately, she informs Derek that's she's the daughter of darkness, the Original and tells him that's he's meant for her, with book 4 finishing like this I was a little apprehensive about this book.
I starting reading with a certain amount of trepidation I know Derek and Sofia have faced many issues and separations but Emilia worried me, they're strongest together and I didn't like the idea of Emilia coming between them. In this book we learn more about some of the other characters, snippets of their pasts and for a while the story doesn't really seem to move forward but things are happening, plans are being made. Aiden and Camilla/ Ingrid are trapped in the shade, Ingrid is seething with hate towards Sofia for killing Borys and ruining her life, Vivienne knows a cure is the answer but can you cure a curse and how do you start.
There were times when I wanted to stop reading, I didn't like the way things were heading but I couldn't as with all the shade books once you've started reading it's almost compulsion to finish.
Now I've reached the end of this book I can sit back and honestly say it was fantastic, brilliant in fact I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
As always write quickly Bella. -
King Derek is being played by a powerful dark being. This being is determined to bring Derek back to darkness. Knowing that Sophia is his light and keeps him grounded Darkness takes it upon himself to bring someone from Derek's past to destroy his relationship with Sophia. Amelia has been created in the perfection of Derek's attraction in woman. He is drawn to her once there eyes meet and once his dreams becomes to intense he realizes that this can end what he has with Sophia.
Another great read! -
In the fifth installment, Derek's loyalty for Sophia, will be tested when a very powerful woman enters his life and he can't get her off of his mind. At the same time, the outside covens are beginning to attack, the Shade, Sophia and Derek are trying with desperation to stop it.
Whoa. This one has a lot of blood she and the most drama I have seen in my life! I don't want to give anything away, but I was extremely irritated with Derek and his choices in this book, if you read you will see why. -
This is not a bad book. I was enjoying the series but there's just too much happening and nothing being resolved and I'm just bored. They're not long books but all the inner monologue and back story from so many different characters is just too much for me.
-
As you get more into the series, the situations and story arc become more dark and sinister. The battle between light and dark becomes more daunting, situations more dire. I am really enjoying the exciting, nail-biting events. On to the next book in the series...!
-
I really wanted to like this book, but I just feel the quality of writing isn't there. And the plot is fairly predictable. I did, however, very much enjoy the battle between darkness and light. I found it very reminiscent of real life and was relatable.
-
I don't know what's wrong with Ms. Bella but I kind of didn't like what happened in this installment. However, I give it 4 stars still because I have lots of hopes for the next book.
-
This was another good book in a series I am very much enjoying reading, I suspect I will only stop reading when I get bored of the characters.
In this book Derek and Sofia are still playing very much a main role and while there are other characters with chapters in their POV I still think they are only filling for the Derek and Sofia love story. Derek in this book spends the majority of the time in the arms of another woman, though he still loves Sofia this other woman does hold a power over him. Sofia does the annoying thing of being lost while Derek is away and has to turn to her father for support to run the Shade in Derek's absence. But mostly this book is about finding a way for Derek and Sofia to be together, a cure to vampirism and a way for their love to withstand the tests it is being put through.
There are a lot of secondary characters and I am still waiting for some of them to get the true story they deserve.
The storyline is pretty good for a book 5 in the series but the number of books in this series is still worrying me, I think the author may run out of ideas and may start repeating themself. The pacing in these books is great, just when I think I need a break the book ends in a cliffhanger and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
3 stars
