From talented illustrator Laura Bryant and gifted newcomer Aimee Reid comes a charming, heartwarming story about a little elephant's love for his mama.

"Mama, when I grow up, will you grow down?"

What would it be like if, one day, Little Gray were the big elephant and Mama the small one? Little Gray can picture it perfectly. He'd shade her from the sun, teach her to make mud, and find pictures in the clouds with her. In fact, he would do for her exactly what she does for him.

Mama's Day with Little Gray Reviews

  • Kate McGinty aka Caryn Caldwell

"If I grew up and you were my calf," Little Gray tells his mother, "I'd spend every day with you." His mother agrees that that would be wonderful indeed. As they wander along the savannah, Little Gray details all the other ways in which he would take care of Mama if their roles were reversed.

This sweet little picture book is perfect for reading aloud right before bed, especially for toddlers and pre-schoolers. It has a similar tone to Guess How Much I Love You, with its loving, back-and-forth banter between parent and child, as well as the comforting ending (but minus the competitive vibe).

Mama’s Day with Little Gray is a lovely book filled with kind words and soft colors (love the endpapers, too!). Little Gray is curious about what the future holds. With each question and answer, Mama Elephant brings comfort and love. Little Gray, trying out a parental role, comes up with many ideas for them to share, as well. The two elephants have a delightful day that ends with great promise of many similar adventures to follow. This beautiful book would be a perfect peaceful choice at bedtime.

Delightful bedtime story book. The child being read to will feel the love that emanates from quiet, consistent attention. The parent or grandparent reading the book will slow down too and recognize the sacredness of every day with a young child.

Can't wait to read this one to my grandchildren when we are at the beach this summer!

Mama's Day is a sweet picture book. I liked it very much. I like books that celebrate family. Little Gray imagines that she is all grown-up. She also imagines that her Mama has grown down, that she is, in fact, Little Gray's calf. The following conversation is cute, sweet, and perhaps familiar. What-if conversations between parent and child aren't exactly new to the genre. But. I liked it. I happen to LOVE elephants which certainly helped.

Plenty of books celebrating mothers are published each year, and this one is a very nice addition. I thought the illustrations were especially lovely.

This is a perfect fit for ecrr-talk! A mom and youngster spend the day talking about what they would do if he were big and she, small. Great example of spending time with your child, giving him/her that important one on one time. And valuing their imagination. In my opinion, this is a contender for a CLEL Bells award. And bonus, on the front flap under the description, is a little book with a 20 on it and the words, "Read to a child! The most important 20 minutes of your day."

  • Sara Grochowski

As Mama and Little Gray spend a day together, Little Gray contemplates life with Mama after he grows up. "Mama," Little Gray asks, "When I grow up, will you grow down?" Simple and touching illustrations paired with the quiet conversation between a mother elephant and her calf makes this picture book a perfect gift for mothers with children of all ages.

3.8 A tender tale of a mother and child elephant imagining how it would be if their roles were reversed, and of course the care and love stayed the same. Reid creates a fantastically supportive mother character that fills the book with all the warmth and support we'd ever wish for our children - a great bedtime read.

Reminiscent of the Runway Bunny in theme and tone, a young elephant asks his mother "when I grow up, will you grow down?" Her rhythmic reassurances and his loving responses capture the trust and affection between them. A big-hearted bedtime picture book of mama and baby love.

"When I grow up, will you grow down?" A little elephant calf asks his mama. As they go about their day, Little Gray tells his mama, "If you were my calf..." and how he would care for her, just as she cares for him. This is a peaceful book that would be a sweet bedtime read for mom and child.

Not perfect, but a nice story that I think the kids would enjoy at storytime.

When it comes to stories about mama elephants and their babies, I prefer "Meet Me at the Moon" but this wasn't bad. The font drove me a little cray, though.
