Going into this book I knew: 1.) I loved Dakin's recent books The Ritual and The Conspiracy, 2.) A Shire Romance was Dakin's first full-length novel and was supposedly a little rough, 3.) It was about hobbits, and 4.) Though, I enjoyed Tolkien's The Hobbit when I read it back in high school, I have never, ever, ever considered hobbits to be sexy or romance-novel worthy...
And then I met Peregrin "Perry" Took and fell in love with him - big hairy feet and all!
While this story is a bit rough in places , it still has the amazing character and relationship details and development that makes Dakin's writing so special.
In A Shire Romance we have Tamsyn, a beautiful and wealthy but lonely human, who is transported to Middle Earth by Radagast the Brown, and Perry, the handsome and audacious hobbit she meets and falls in love with while there. I can honestly say that I do them and the author a disservice, though, by trying to sum them up so tidily! Tamsyn isn't your typical fainting violet! She's practical, daring, fun, and completely comfortable with her sexuality. She is also a character after my own heart because she curses like a sailor (Perry wasn't the only one she won over with her first use of the F-word... LOL!) And Perry isn't your typical stone-faced, I-don't-want-to-love-you-but-I-do male! He is fun, flirty, horny, and is comfortable enough in his masculinity to openly show his emotions (and seriously... For every tear he shed, I shed like twenty!) Strong female characters are appearing regularly in romances these days but male characters like Perry... not so much. That is all Dakin and I love it!
So while this one may be a little rough in spots, it is still significantly better than most of the books and short stories I read on a daily basis for the characters, humor, and love story alone! Don't let your knowledge (or lack of knowledge) of Tolkien's writing influence your decision on whether or not to read this either - The setting and the Tolkien and Hobbit references are well explained by Dakin and this story can function as an enjoyable standalone read for even the most oblivious of romance and fantasy readers. I highly recommend for all... especially since it's free! Enjoy!
