Separate But Not Equal: The Dream and the Struggle Reviews

Read this with a group of urban high school students who aspire to be teachers. The discussion it generated was awesome!

It was a good strong history of the struggles of black people during supposed desegregation. After the National Guard helped seven children "integrate" into an Arkansas highschool, this process of desegregation continued through the early seventies and is even still occurring as people claim to be void of racist thoughts, feelings, and actions. My only problems with the book was how it was very fact-based and surface oriented-not delving into any details for such a massive subject, and a couple of statistics were stated in such a way as to mislead the reader, i.e. In this year the statistic was less than a third and in the years that followed, it was 29.8%. Obviously the statistic didn't change but the writer was trying to unnaturally influence the reader.

this books shows how many people struggle during the segregation time by not being able to get a good education that they want to have

Very informative but also very dry reading. It's a Scholastic book but really not written for children, in my opinion.

I never knew black education was that bad back then, I'm glad I read this book.

Good book, lots of facts. Hard to believe what was going on so recently in the past, can't believe the inhumanity of some people. We are all the same skin deep...
