An island of beauty becomes A GATEWAY TO TERROR...

Few could argue that the exclusive island of San Martin is anything less than paradise. In this wealthy enclave, veterinarian Markie Cross has a thriving practice, but her almost psychic connection to animals has made human relationships -- especially with men -- harder to navigate. Until mystery, murder and something unfathomable shatter her world...

People are dying strange, unexplained deaths. Island medical examiner Declan Quinn is stunned at the unearthly condition of the bodies, and he and Markie share a dark suspicion that something terrifying and impossible is at work here. Something that may not be human.

As a sinister message becomes clearer, Markie and Dec race to understand the tragic history of this island paradise and unlock the true nature of the evil now descending. Because if they can't, Markie may become the next victim....

Something Deadly (Mira) Reviews

I was trying to figure out what it was about this book that made me love it so much.

Was it the setting? The story takes place on a secluded island. Islands are small and have secrets. Everyone knows each other’s business. And if something goes wrong, there’s nowhere to run.

Was it the characters? Being an animal lover, I couldn’t help but like Markie. She’s the new vet hired for the exclusive island. And the medical examiner, Declan, has an open mind. And I thought he was the perfect fit for Markie. And then there’s Kato, Markie’s wolf/husky companion. He and Markie have this almost spiritual connection. They seem to actually communicate with each other.

Or was it the plot? Something was preying on the inhabitants of the beautiful island. The attacks appeared random, leaving the victims hollowed out husks. The condition of the bodies defied explanation and there was no telling who would be next.

I think it was all of three of these and something more. The writing. Rachel Lee had me hooked right from the beginning. The characters could have stepped off the pages, they felt so genuine. I could visualize the island. And it was chilling to “see” the attacks.

Everything worked for me. I read this book several times, returning to it when I wanted to relax with a favorite story in between new books. This is one of those books that isn’t part of a series, but I sure wish it was.

I own a copy of this book. My review is voluntarily given.

..".sex, lies and politics...a compelling source of conflict." --Publishers Weekly on WITH MALICI
HUH??? That's the description, but doesn't do the book justice in any way. Sure, they were present as catalysts... but hardly in the usual government scandal way. An exotic island, Kato the wolf/Husky mix, the evil spirit of Annie Black.... a fictional tale far more entertaining (and less tacky) than our real life bumbling politicos become embroiled in. A quick read, with unusual murders and a few unexpected plot twists, providing just enough suspense to stay interested.

There are things about this novel I liked and things I disliked. I rate it five stars because Rachel Lee succeeds at creating an interesting plot as well as including well-developed characters - the two most important things an author should provide. The story kept me wanting to read so I could figure out what happened and how it happened. The things I disliked were only because of my personal tastes and beliefs so I can't deduct points for them. Although the book is marketed as a romantic suspense, I feel it more appropriately fits into the horror genre.

This book grabs you and holds you till the end. SUSPENSE! Markie is a veterinarian with a great thriving practice, she is almost psychic with her connections to animals, needless to say people start dying on the Island where she is working, Medical examiner Declan steps in and the both work together to see what evil is lurking..
Not usually my type of book but was lent to me and was not disappointed, held you right till the end.

This is the first book I have read by Rachel Lee and I really enjoyed it. Hmmm, can someone enjoy bodies going to much for no explanable reason - I did. No one, not even the CDC could discover the cause of the deaths on the island. Declan Quinn, M.D. and Markie Cross, DVM had even seen the death of Ashley and it was unexplainable from a scientific standpoint but there were other things at work on the island. Things that are dark and from the past.

Definitely not a gentle bedtime story, Something Deadly delivers a classic Good vs Evil story with a Caribbean touch. This is a level of Evil you don't mess around with, which soon becomes apparent to those who stirred it up. While some of the details were too gruesome for my delicate sensibilities, they were definitely effective in ratcheting up the tension. Very well done tale, but not one I'm up to visiting again.

I am reading books on "thriller" genre lists for my book club this month. This one was on a supernatural thriller because the protagonists not only are able to commune with dogs in a small way, but their whole island is under attack from an evil spirit. The spirit's method of murder is to inhabit a person's body and basically crush every last bit at a cellular level. Nasty.

The most suspenseful book I read all year. Very mysterious and ghost-like (there is a word like occult, that I am trying to remember). What is haunting the island and can they survive?

Pretty interesting in the beginning..But the book lost me towards the end, got a little boring.
