Laurence Bretton has been the talk of the Ton since the shock announcement that he is the celebrated playwright Valentine Lawe. Keeping up the charade for his sisters' sake isn't a problem—that is, until he lays eyes on Lady Joanna Northrup.…
Since her father inherited his title, Joanna is no longer free to marry for love. Now she must choose a wealthy, titled husband—and soon! Regretfully, this doesn't include the dashing Laurence—and certainly not his flamboyant alter ego. But the twinkle in his eyes tells her there's so much more to this man. This was a cute cosy read. I say this because there wasn't much action or drama going on in the story. It was quite a simple love story that began with a meet-cute in a bookshop.
I started this book by listening to the audio. I was hooked from the beginning when the Hero, Laurence, and heroine, Joanna, started talking to each other about a book she wanted to buy. They immediately had chemistry bonding over their passion for all things Ancient Egyptian. What I would do to have this kind of meet-cute with a handsome man who shares my passion! *sigh*
The story really focused on them falling in love with each other and how they learnt to trust each other completely. It was very sweet and they only kissed once or twice. And they weren't even steamy kisses. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed that there was no lovemaking scene. I mean, it is a romance novel after all, right? But I do think that their romance didn't really need it to happen. I think it would've been out of place for them to suddenly fall into bed with each other and it would've been too forced for the author to have made that happen. I've read many novellas that had very out-of-place lovemaking scenes. So I guess that was what the author wanted to avoid.
I felt the story concluded a bit too easily, though.
However, I still liked this book. Will I read it again? Maybe not. But I would definitely recommend it to a teenage girl who wants to be introduced to the genre of historical romance. -
What a pleasure to read!
I just finished reading friend and fellow writer Gail Whitiker's new historical, NO ROLE FOR A GENTLEMAN. The author's prose is beautiful and evocative, but the true beauty of her novel lies in the creation of characters with warmth, integrity, vulnerability, and a passion for life that brings them vibrantly alive.
Thank you for a warmly enjoyable visit to the past, and the companionship of Lawrence, Lady Joanna, their families, and the colorful world of Regency theatre and archeology, which is woven seamlessly and intriguingly throughout the story.
NO ROLE FOR A GENTLEMAN features characters from its predecessor, NO OCCUPATION FOR A LADY - also a very enjoyable read.

This is the 1st book I read by Gail Whitiker. I'm sorry I stopped reading this story 📖 at chapter 2 because it didn't grab my interest.

This was a fantastic book! I loved Laurence so much and his struggle over being Valentine Law and being himself felt very realistic. I was hooked from the very beginning. A very delightful reappearance of his sister Victoria as well and Loftus turned out to be quite different than I thought he would early on in the book. Awesome awesome read!

I encountered Laurence, who strikes me as the first male character in a historical fiction romance novel to work so hard to prove his love for a lady.
Intriguing and not so full of wit, but it certainly has some charm.
A lovely quick read! -
