June 2016, Far North, New Zealand.

The job seemed leave Auckland, pick up 500kg of meth from Ninety-Mile Beach and drive it back south, while keeping a low profile.

How hard could that be?

This is the true story of one of New Zealand's biggest ever drug busts, and how those responsible almost got away with half a tonne of crystal meth. Oh, and half a billion dollars.

But thanks to the sleuthing skills of Ahipara's good-hearted locals - and a series of unbelievable faux-pas by the drug-smugglers - police managed to catch the crims.

They say fact is stranger than fiction, and in this case it is. Stranger, and funnier. It's a story like no other. This is Far North.

“It’s a bonkers story — a story no one would wish to get caught up in — and it all begins with Ed and his wife, Heather, just trying to do a good deed.”

“In fact, people in Kaitāia don’t tend to ask too many questions full stop. As you’ll discover, that’s partly how these smugglers so nearly got away with New Zealand’s biggest ever drugs import, despite leaving a trail practically visible from space.”

This truly is a bonkers story and it is just so kiwi while being completely un-kiwi. This book is a great companion to the TV show of the same name which I recommend as well. The book is less dramatised that the show it’s great to see the facts of the story without the flare - not that there is much difference as this story lends itself to suspense, drama and humour just by the insane people involved in this story.

Far North delves deeper than the news coverage and goes into just exactly what unfolded in small-town New Zealand in 2016. The book shows just how unusual and unpredictable this story is and how more insane it becomes and it unfolds.

Incredible series of events. Hats off to Ed and Heather for being the true heroes of it all.

I found the research and facts of it all very compelling and thorough. The detail was good and even had pictures of the evidence which I thought was really informative!

The writing style however I couldnt get over though. It seemed to be very ‘stamped’ rather than flowing and took me out of the narrative. I ended up finding it hard to read and follow.

All through the book it had “Thugga went off to bed”, “Thugga then ate food”, “Blaze then made a phone call”. Almost like editing the courtroom proceedings and trying to convert them into a story. Given, a lot of the evidence was achieved that way, but it did not transcend into a gripping novelization.

Not my style of reading, but I know a lot of family and friends that found this book a lot more enjoyable, especially if you were aware of the story when it happened.

Looking forward to watching the tv series
