    One word: WOW!!

Never having heard of Nathan Myhrvold before, I didn't know what to expect of this book. Upon further research I learned that he has this tome of a book out
Modernist Cuisine, where he combined science, cooking technology and food photography to create a 2,400 page cookbook. It was a huge success. The book basically reinvented cooking and the accompanying imagery was quite different than usually in cookbooks. Instead of using an emotive and traditional setting of the food amid props, food was presented while being prepared or cooked and shown cut in half, including the tools like the pan, oven, or blender.

Talk about using radical techniques in food photography!

So now comes this book, in which those images to illustrate that huge cookbook (mostly new, some previously publised) are shown in all their glory. In the last chapter of the book studio setups are shown and photographic techniques and other info are briefly discussed per photo.

As a photographic art book, it certainly doesn't disappoint. The photos are of impeccable quality, razorsharp and the techniques and lightning are superb. The images are quite large (full- or double paged) and vividly colorful. One thing I noticed is the energy the food radiates, it induced some mouthwatering on my side. I could hear the fat crackling and sizzling and taste those amazing textures on my tongue.

Having an interest in food photography myself, the last chapter is informative. There is some discussion about gear used and studio (lighting) setups are shown.

Also mentioned are digital workflow and basic outlines of editing techniques. However, if you are looking for fully and detailed editing tutorials, this is not the book.

But if you are looking for some food photography inspiration, this is a must-have!
