Drawing on Irish folklore, The Seal Queen tells the story of Briah, an escaped slave who finds sanctuary, for herself and her unborn child, on an enchanted beach. There her life is filled with peace and contented solitude, the joys of motherhood, and even the possibility of love with a merman whose song haunts her dreams.

Briah’s magical world is shaken, however, when she discovers that her son is the long-awaited savior and future king of the roane (shape-shifting seals, and gentler cousins of the selkies). Briah wants to help these magical creatures, but she is unwilling to allow her son to become a pawn in their deadly schemes. When faced with the choice between sending her child to battle his diabolical father or allowing the roane to be exterminated, Briah insists on finding a third option.

Briah (female) had been a slave for 4 yrs. under Lir. He had gotten her P/G. Old Crooked Nose was their new owner. The group of slaves set sail for Erin a new location inhabited by seals. It was a fairly good sized town. They were going to be sold on an auction block. Nisa (mgr.) bought her.

Zillah introduced Briah to Donal's House of Pleasures on the island of Finool. Agor is Donal nephew. Briah was to work in the kitchen until she gave birth. Gresta over saw the kitchen. Other girls: Nula, Barta, Larren, Karris, Lytha (seriously hurt). Agor hit Briah & told her the child would be killed, she decided to run away. Agor tried to molest Briah the next day & she killed him. She was on the run.

Briah found a sheltered cove by the beach which had a cave she lived in. Briah adapted quite well to her new environment (4 season, hunting, fishing, gathering). She had her son Kamin by herself, but suddenly she was surrounded by seals.

When Kamin got older Briah told him of her/G/P past. She often thought about being without a man in her life or a father for Kamin. 1 night Briah fell asleep & dreamed of the seals; the 2 were crowned King & Queen. The mystery of Kamin (roane) & the seals begins.

Will Briah get Kamin back? How will they deal with the power of the Faerie? Can Taran survive on the surface & be a part of their lives? How will they deal with Lir in the future?

I have a BS in Sociology (Criminal Justice), & in my MSW; race is something we studied intensively. On my paternal side my great/great G/P’s immigrated & came to Ellis Island. I enjoyed the seals reliving their family past.

What a wonderful heart felt story. Easy to read & follow, excellent characters, several errors or misspelled words & no out of story line sequence. Horatio Alger would be very proud to meet Briah. “Pull up your bootstraps.” Seal hunting is big business, maybe a little less violence. This would make a great teen animated type movie. It is very easy for me to give this book 5 stars.

Thank you for the free book

I found myself drawn into this tale right from the first, haunting sentence. Saidak’s enchanting writing keeps you entranced in this thrilling tale. She develops her world gradually, but fully, so that you feel like you’re exploring it alongside the main character. Her unique storyline is very captivating. It kept me guessing and thinking, trying to figure out what would happen next. At the same time it was a complexly put together tale, weaving many people, places, and events together seamlessly.

The wide variety of characters and character types in this story was a brilliant addition to the tale. All of the major players in this tale were well developed, giving the reader insight into their lives. I got to know these characters so well that I really found myself identifying with and feeling for them.

As a whole this was a brilliant fantasy tale that steps outside the mould and keeps you captivated throughout. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more by this fetching author.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.
